Viviane passed under a sign.

As she ran inside to find her kickboxing class, she passed by a glass room filled with a row of brand-new StrainMax elliptical machines. A lone, middle-aged woman wearing headphones stood next to one of the machines. She had a low center of gravity, so to speak.
Looking through the glass wall, Viviane saw that the woman was not running on the StrainMax machine but fiddled with her headphones. She happened to look up from her fiddling to see a perfectly proportioned runway model looking back at her making eye contact. The middle-aged woman gasped and jumped back. Viviane averted her eyes.
“Sorry about that! Didn’t mean to scare you,” she said before she ran off.
The woman with the headphones collected herself and glanced up and down the hall making sure that Viviane had gone. Keeping her eye on the glass wall, the woman put on her headphones and turned them on. The headphones she wore blocked out all outside sounds as if she was in a virtual reality. They also prevented anyone near them from hearing any leaked voices. She grabbed onto them to make sure they were secure. A mysterious voice on the other end of the line gave her goosebumps whenever it spoke.
“I told you not to call on the encrypted channel unless it is a Level One Emergency.” A computer distorted the voice.
“I can’t do this anymore!” the woman whispered, straining to keep her voice quiet. She tried to hide her face by looking down at the ground. “The authorities have raised the threat level to HIGH, don’t you know? They’re going to find out!”
“That will not happen. We’ve taken care of the authorities. You have to stay committed to the end. It’s already too late for you change your mind.”

“But what will happen if I get caught? What will happen to my daughter? Melina doesn’t know a thing. She’s innocent!”
“Remain focused,” the voice in her head warned. “Everything is proceeding according to plan. Continue with your mission and do not call on this line again.” The unidentified voice terminated its transmission and the normal sounds of the gym returned.
The middle-aged woman started to exercise on the StrainMax elliptical. She knew that in order to lose inches off her hips and thighs, she would have to run on this elliptical for at least half an hour if not more. She also knew that exercise was the best way for her to deal with her anxiety and to forget about the risks she took for her and her daughter’s sake.

The Stories We Told In the Dark
6/19/21: not abandoned, taking this back up again but reworking older chapters first! The planet Tellus is dying and humanity’s last hope is finding other planets that are capable of sustaining human life. Valentine is one of many orphans who were forced into a state program and experimented upon to enhance their strength, intelligence, and magical capabilities. They have been chosen to lead humanity out into space, guiding and protecting them as they gather resources and rebuild their population so that they may someday return home. But the very procedures meant to prepare them for the challenges ahead cause them to become despised and feared and looked upon as something monstrous. *** Updated biweekly on Tuesdays. [Schedule is currently a bit borked due to poor health, looking to finish up the first section of this book by the end of the year then back to a regular schedule in January] This is a kitchen sink space opera. It originated off me lamenting the lack of witches in space and has spiraled out of control from there.

Making of a Genius [A Progression LitRPG]
What does it take to climb to the top of the academic ladder? Lexus came face to face with his mediocrity the moment he arrived at Cambridge University to study computer science. There was a ceiling that he could not overcome, an intellectual world that was unreachable. But if you give a chicken an eagle's wings, it will fly higher than you could ever imagine. And that was exactly what happened to Lexus: with the help of a system, he could make it big. Schedule:1 chapter per week (every Friday evening at 5:30pm GMT). The weekly schedule is to allow time for research and factual accuracy where required. Author's Note: The story is about a computer science student at university, gradually improving and embarking on the path to become a world-renowned genius-level expert with the help of a system. There'll be a lot of studying and academics, but imagine being the best in your year. Easily. At that point, academics stops being stressful and starts being fun, doesn't it? The initial chapters are heavy on mathematical detail, but I don't expect anyone to actually read through them thoroughly. It's fine to skim them or even skip them, but I hope you try to get a sense of the progress being made, and feel happy for Lexus when something 'clicks' inside his brain :) As the story progresses, later chapters will go into less depth into individual questions, though I aim to remain consistent in terms of scientific accuracy/feasibility. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the story!
