《The Trials of Bethany》32 - Facing the Music

The next morning Bethany still wasn't quite feeling her cheery self. It was early she hadn't got enough sleep the night before and she only had time for a short workout before work. She smiled at the fact only getting a small workout was now something she didn't want, even on a day when she was exhausted. She then smiled more at the idea she would get to wake Pete up. He wasn't good at mornings at the best of times. Let alone when he had got to bed very late the night before having clearly been drinking.
Bethany glided over to his door and having knocked a couple of times was met with a groan that she chose to interpret as permission to enter, which it almost certainly wasn't. Having entered she began the arduous task of getting Pete, a hungover night owl, out of bed. In that moment she would have been horrified how much she resembled her mother, she was even calling Pete, Peter and talking to him in a general disappointed tone. Eventually though he dragged himself up and out of bed ready to exercise.
They both went through their familiar work outs although Pete had less vigour than even his normal low effort attempts. They made plans to hopefully catch Pete in the afternoon back at the inn. Pete begrudgingly agreed and headed back off to the inn, for what Bethany expected would be a long nap. Bethany though got quickly changed and rushed off towards work, not looking forward to another shift at yet another new workplace where she would have to pick up on the unique quirks of the place as well as a whole new menu.
As always, she rose above it and by mid-afternoon, she'd had yet another wash and had recovered from her bitterness towards Pete. This was helped in part by the large increase in Credits she had that had clearly resulted from his efforts.
Meeting up once more Bethany started with a quick apology about being bitter that morning before they got into the reason for the convo.
"So, I’ve been working at various food establishments and have another four shifts lined up. So far, I've earnt 30 Credits with plans that will make another 40-ending tomorrow evening. How are you finding things."

As expected, Pete's explanation was noticeable longer.
"Well after we parted ways, I wracked my brain trying to think of what skills I could offer. Obviously, we established I could do the carving thing, but I wasn't particularly feeling it and without you selling it would have been a lot less fruitful. I ended up spending the whole day achieving nothing and feeling pretty bad about the whole thing. So, I ended up back here and after a couple of drinks i ended up whistling and singing for the patrons. Not to toot my own horn but i was pretty good and people started shouting out requests. I let them make requests at the cost of a Credit or two. Similarly, I agreed to do two more nights at the inn but i figured after that most of the locals would be running low."
Bethany let out a little sigh at the concept of another two whole nights dealing with the loud music that Pete caught.
"What's up, it's a good plan, isn't it?"
"No, it is, it is just I'm so tired and really wanted to be able to sleep properly tonight."
"Ahhh" Pete paused as he considered that conundrum. "How about this then because i feel bad. I'll pay for you to have a room elsewhere for the next two nights. In return you don't wake me up for our morning workouts and let me skip them."
"I can't let you skip it Pete, we need this. But i will let you delay it to an afternoon thing if you promise to do it. I can't lend you the bracelet but hopefully they might recognise you and you won't have to queue"
"Deal"
The two shook on it and both were feeling better about the situation. Over the next two days they didn't get to interact all that much as both were off in their own projections. it was only after Bethany's final shift that they hung out again. She had enjoyed a late dinner and almost immediately taken herself to bed exhausted from her life of food service. She fairly quickly got herself settled and to sleep.
What felt like only a split second later she awoke in terror to her door being kicked in. Safe to say she screamed at the top of her lungs and leapt up to defend herself before realising her so called intruder was simply Pete.

"What the actual FUCK Pete, you gave me a heart attack I thought you somebody who wanted to attack me."
"Sorry sorry sorry, I didn't think. I'm sorry i was just so excited I had to come celebrate."
Bethany wiped the sleep from her eyes and took in Pete again, now she was properly awake she noticed the change she assumed Pete was going on about [Crediteir Peter Sanna]. Having seen that Bethany had finally caught up with what was happening Pete swiped her finger and Bethany received a blue box from him.
Title Gained: Crediteir (ultra-rare)
Title unlocked due to being the first being from Earth to unlock the Credit Shop
Offers a 20% discount to any shop purchases
Bethany was excited for Pete, after all a non-skill title was clearly a standout feature. She checked her own Trial Credit total. She was on 100 Credits herself so logically Pete had reached just over 100. This was huge and extremely generous of Pete. After all he could have immediately come over having reached his target. Bethany dismissed the other screens wanting to focus on Pete and his win. The sleep that had been disrupted was all but gone now as the adrenalin and excitement took over.
"Well done Pete that’s so cool! I can't believe we actually did it. 100 whole Credits. That's more double what anybody else probably has on the whole planet."
Pete was still bouncing around the room in excitement, he'd discovered something new and couldn't quite control himself. Bethany ended up ushering him out to the bar, otherwise she wasn't sure the room would still be intact the next day. There the two toasted to their good fortune and drank the night away. While not normally Bethany's thing it was a special occasion and they were celebrating. The two of them had a good time and Bethany didn't wake up until gone lunchtime the following day.
Waking up she snuck out of her room where Pete had also crashed and was still asleep. Grabbing some food as so-called breakfast and requesting a strong tea with honey, again celebrating, Bethany sat down and tried to get her memories back in order. She didn't remember all that much from the previous evening, there were occasional snapshots she distinctly remembered doing an extremely poor impression of Pete and animatedly discussing proper butter churning technic for way too long. Beyond that it was a blur. She didn't wake with regrets though and even if it was something different it was nice to let her hair down so to speak and to celebrate the win.
More painful than the minor hangover she was nursing was the wait for Pete to appear. She didn't want to explore the notifications about Credits without him but also couldn't stand waiting. She was too tired to work out and gave herself the day off. Instead, she spent her time sat by the window, people watching and generally trying to distract herself from the gnawing curiosity. After another hour of so Pete finally appeared looking generally bedraggled and as though he had literally dragged himself from the bed, down the stairs and up to Bethany's table. She ordered him a piping hot tea, to which he nodded appreciatively. Still not quite having it in himself to speak. Eventually he seemed to have woken up more and gotten slightly more control.
"Wild night huh?" Bethany asked tentatively,
"Wild night doesn't cover it. Fun though, right?" Pete asked wincing slightly at the sound of his own voice.
The two kept to very intermittent small talk where they both mostly gazed out the window. Time sped up for the pair slightly and before long they ordered more food, both a full meal and some snacks, occasionally during that time one of the other would go to pull up their screen but the light from them caused them to recoil. Eventually they could open it without their heads shouting at them and the pair both pulled up their screens excited and ready to consider their next step.

The Rocky Shore
This is a LitRPG series. Every story you read here takes place in the same virtual world, with the same rules and limitations. Characters will travel, explore vast and dangerous realms, overcome obstacles, meet one another, enter into conflicts with one another, forge alliances, make horrible mistakes, and occasionally just die. A technological singularity has been achieved, and humanity has been trapped in a virtual world by a super-intelligent, self-improving artificial intelligence. This program is not malicious at all. In fact, it desires nothing except the happiness and fulfillment of every human it has copied into itself. If its decisions seem strange to you, that's only because its reasoning is far beyond ours. It recognizes that humans cannot be happy without enemies to overcome and goals to achieve, as well as the possibility of failure and death. The world it has created may be heaven or hell, depending on the free choices of the people it contains. The non-player characters who live in this realm have no idea that they are part of a vast computer system. They seem real enough, but there is no way to tell if they are truly self-aware. Even the system that created them isn't certain. This is world in which all the things that humans are used to dealing with in the abstract: skills, talents, knowledge, reputation, social status, morality, even love, exist as readable statistics that players can see and interact with objectively. This has many curious and complex effects on how people perceive themselves and the world around them. A few quick notes on the system: -Death is permanent -The system interface can only be accessed at certain locations. -Magic of diverse kinds is available and useful, but is not a good substitute for skills, physicallity, or mental prowess. Non-magical characters are common and competitive. -There is no inventory system. Characters must physically carry everything they wish to have on their person. -Healing is slow and difficult. Magical Healing is all but unheard of. Protagonists: Raymond Garrison- A man in his late twenties who used to work as a forklift operator in Idaho. His path leads him to work as a mercenary, protecting a small community of humans and goblins from the Seelie Fae who wish to exterminate them. Patricia Chandler- A elderly British woman who arrives in this new world with her grandson Kyle and her granddaughter Elizabeth. Never having dealt with rpg game mechanics before, she is in for a rough time, but she is determined to keep her grandkids alive in a world full of danger and evil. Jamil Mesbah- An Egyptian woman who once worked as a technical writer. Her path leads into a vast and hostile forest, where she must master both her magical abilities and her survival skills in order to succeed. Enjoy your travels, friends.

But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves.
