《The Trials of Bethany》12 - Great Godiac Sewing Bee

After a productive day of selling, they closed up the stall and Stilwart invited Bethany to have dinner with him, his son and his daughter, Guliveneir and Harriacote aged 10 and 18 respectively. Bethany warmly accepted; she might have planned to read but she wanted to experience as much of this planet as she possibly could while she was there. They went straight there from the stall, Stilwart helpfully pointed out where she had been staying as they walked, the apartment being roughly halfway between the house and the stall.
Stilwart opened the door and shouted a friendly ‘I'm home!!!’ Into the house where it bounced off the walls and was met with a general silence. He didn't seem to be surprised by that fact, and gave Bethany a look saying, kids am I right, as though she herself wasn't a child. He followed it up with "We have a guest, come say hello" and after a pause "NOW!!!"
At that Bethany finally heard evidence the house wasn’t empty and that she hadn't befriended what could have turned out to be a crazy person. She heard the sound of whispers coming from the stairs though she couldn't pick out any of the actual words before the thumping of feet crashing down the stairs. She was greeted by two more of the toadlike creatures that had more than a passing resemblance to Stilwart. Both were shorter than he was not helped by the slight slump they carried themselves with. The taller of the pair looked slightly older than Bethany was and had on a tightly fitting outfit. Unlike the other of her species that Bethany had seen before she had this woman had a full head of hair, that cascaded down her shoulders reaching just beyond where the collarbone on a human would be. It was clearly a wig, not that Bethany was so rude to highlight such a thing. The smaller of the two was a shier being and seemed generally slimier than either of his relatives, he hid himself behind his sister's body, not so much he was hidden but enough that there was some distance between them. After the kids stood there nervously for a while Stilwart elbows his daughter into speaking.
"Hi, I’m Harriacote but you can call me Harri, Dad's eldest, it's lovely to meet you. Welcome to our home" Harri said sounding slightly stilted, her dad had clearly brought business colleagues over before as this line sounded rehearsed. Harri then took a step to the side revealing her brother properly. He coughed before mumbling a greeting. If Bethany was honest, she understood none of it but given context she picked up the fact it was a near identical greeting to that of his older sister. Bethany offered out a hand towards the pair and both shook it.

"Hi I’m Bethany, I come from a small village called Barrowmede on a planet called Earth. We have just started having these Trials appear, I think Stilwart called it being initialised? This is my first Sponsored Trial and I am apparently sticking around for the week. It's nice to meet you guys."
Having said the obligatory hello Guliveneir vanished back upstairs again however Harri lingered intrigued by the idea of somebody from a new world. Stilwart went to get drinks as the two women took seats, Bethany took that occasion to read Harri's nameplate, [Harriacote Chilbrow, 9]. She was impressed by the level. Obviously, it slowed down the higher you got but being level 9 by 18 seeming impressive at least to Bethany. Adults in town had floated between level 7 and 15 roughly with occasional outliers on either side.
Bethany decided to take the plunge and ask the first question. "This is probably a dumb question but I haven't asked Stilwart yet, what are you guys called, what's this planet? How long since you guys were initialised?"
Harri shot a look to the kitchen, "Wow dad has told you nothing hasn't he? Well, we call this planet Lexicoth and this city is Bridgewater because it's built where the only bridge over the river was, imaginative right? As for our race, there are two sentient races, that's races who can think and communicate, us guys who are called Grodiacs, the other race, which I'm sure you've seen around town is the Katteacof. Your turn, your outfit looks itchy, uncomfortable and the stitching-“ Stilwart was walking in as Harri was saying this and slammed his tray down more forcefully than necessary.
"Harriacote apologise at once for being so rude"
"I don't mind Stilwart, honest, comparatively it is poorly made"
Harri rolled her eyes at her dad and notedly did not apologise. "Anyway, is your planet like old fashioned or was this a choice? You aren't in a cult or something are you?" Harri asked sounding alarmed at the end causing Bethany to chuckle,
"No, I'm not in a cult or anything, my hometown doesn’t really do religion much despite it’s popularity elsewhere. My planet is just a little behind you guys, well quite a lot behind you guys we don't have any of these lights you guys do and your shower? Amazing I could probably stay in there all day"
"For real? No shower and this is the norm for clothes? Right come up with me. Dad we'll be back for dinner, we're going to go try on some clothes."

At that Harri grabbed Bethany and dragged her upstairs to her room. Once there she released her and as Bethany rubbed her wrist Harri flung open her closet and started digging around the back.
"You are a obviously quite a bit smaller than me, but I think I have some old clothes in here that will fit you with a little alteration."
Harri tugged out a huge crate full of clothes and attempted to lift it to the bed. Bethany rushed to help and together they heaved the box onto the bed. Harri immediately began pulling out outfits and settling on a pair of bell bottom jeans and a black tee-shirt with an embossed bouquet of a flower that resembled a green sunflower on it. Bethany hesitantly removed her clothes to put them on. Harri showed no sign of turning her back but was focused on the box, so Bethany didn't feel that uncomfortable with the whole situation.
While roughly the right length both the shirt and trousers were too loose for Bethany, Harri turned her focus back to Bethany, her mouth full of safety pins she twirled her finger and obediently Bethany did a twirl holding up the trousers as she did so. After watching the twirl Harri approached Bethany and confidently started stabbing pins into the outfit, Bethany flinched but trusted Harri, well trusted Stilwart and so was willing to trust his daughter.
Once pinned the outfit fit much more naturally and Bethany didn't need to hold it on anymore. Harri got her to squirm out before putting the outfit on a sewing machine. As it whirled, she explained what she was doing to Bethany,
"So, Beth, can I call you Beth? I'm going to call you Beth", it seemed making decisions like that ran in the family, "So Beth what I’m doing here is twofold. First, I’m sewing up what is commonly known as the slime flaps. You humans aren't slimy so I’m getting rid of them. The airflow is nice, but it can be chilly, and I imagine you'd prefer the modesty of them closed" Bethany nodded appreciatively,
"Exactly, further you are naturally slimmer than me, not a criticism just a facet of your species I’m sure, so I’m pinning it in so it will fit. This way you won't look silly when we go shopping, oh we're going shopping, I hear dad gave you the day off at the end of the week? If you are free? Of course, you are free who else do you know, it's not like you will hang out with dad, we’ll go then, and probably before then too."
All the while Harriacote was talking she was also cutting and sewing, before long she'd finished the outfit and got Bethany to try it on. She loved it. She wasn't expecting to, but it fit so well, and the contrast of the shirt and the flower really popped. When Harriacote got her to take the outfit off again Bethany couldn't help but be disappointed. This was short lived though as Harriacote threw another outfit on her. These were again jeans, but they were cut differently, once again though they were massively too big. The shirt this time was a button up covered in a floral print she'd barely finished doing this one up when Harriacote sliced off all the buttons.
"It's too big to properly adjust but I might attach it to an undershirt for a layered look. Goodness this is exciting, isn't it?" Bethany could only nod at Harri's comment, she was feeling slightly overwhelmed by the whole thing, but in a good way, she thought. Harri pulled off the whole outfit again and stuck her into a final outfit a floral dress that on her dragged on the floor and didn't sit on her shoulders. Again, Harri started stabbing it with pins somehow still not piercing Bethany's flesh despite the closeness of the pins. As she pulled this one off, she told Bethany to put back on the tee-shirt jean combo stating dinner was soon and her old clothes needed a good wash. Harriacote wasn't wrong and before she had finished modifying the second outfit a bell rang from downstairs signifying dinner.

The Dungeon Hive
One thing I noticed about most dungeon stories is that most races mistakenly believe that dungeons have a hive-mind and I go, “That make sense.” Considering the various powers and how big dungeons can get, wouldn’t it make more sense for them to have a hive-mind?
