CHAPTER FORTY SIX

If only life were as simple as just running faster

~

Leaf did everything he could do use what he had learned

Pumping mana into his legs until they both burned

Weaving through the trees and monsters like a bird in flight

Barely able to see the ground, with just portal light

Achievement: Limit Breaker

You’re pushing yourself to achieve new limits and new speeds

I’ll try to bless you according to your current needs

Normally some rest is needed after an increase

I’ll limit them so that your journey need not ever cease

Leaf, no god predicted this, and it came on quickly

But you must believe in your fate, no matter what you see

I will push you forward on your journey and your quest

You must be ready for a long adventure without rest

He didn’t have time to appraise the monsters he ran by

Some were crawling on the ground while other flew up high

Goblins, wyverns, orcs and gremlins, monsters big and mean

But most of the monsters were like none he’d ever seen

Even though his mother had taught him of such creatures

He had never heard of these or seen them in pictures

It was like a thousand nightmares all at once came true

He wanted to wake up but there was nothing he could do

And so he searched, as he was asked, for somewhere they could hide

Running all the way toward a rocky mountainside

Avoiding hordes of monsters, he could not look everywhere

But there did seem to be a cave opening here and there

Most of them were already occupied by some beast

But it was nice to know that they had some options at least

He wagered that the mountainside would be their safest bet

Growing frustrated that he hadn’t found something yet

“I’ll just get Sky to choose a cave, she’s better at this stuff

Finding a few options here should be more than enough

He marked the place within his mind and started to head back

Then to find himself surrounded by a dark wolf pack

These creatures are feared in any place they choose to roam

They call the most inhospitable monster lands their home

Strongest in a group, but quite formidable alone

Each of them is still a cause for concern on their own

Leaf would normally just laugh at stats so low on speed

But they he knew stats were not all that an animal would need

Their massive legs were clearly built to outrun any prey

And they’d already circled him so he’d not run away

He panicked as he lost count at around thirty or so

Aside from through them there was nowhere he was free to go

He noticed that they started a fair distance from him at first

Just one was approaching, but it was by far the worst

Its dark fur looks quite soft but it like an iron shield

Tougher than the armour found on any battle field

Ascended from a dark wolf who has proved its hunting skill

The leader’s always first to fight and rush in for the kill

Leaf stood still as if he’d hoped they’d simply leave him be

But their cold intent to confront him was plain to see

The Dark Wolf Leader opened up his jaws as if to smile

Dragging out the moment of Leaf’s terror for a while

Desperately he tried to think of what his friend would say

“If Sky was here, how would she chase a pack of wolves away?”

He gave a wry smile when he realized that she’d just fly

But then he had an idea while glancing at the sky

Before the leader had a chance, Leaf picked up a small stone

And the wolves glanced in confusion at where the rock was thrown

Leaf had been hoping they might chase the rock like most dogs would

Just in case it missed its target, but still they all stood

Luckily, Leaf hit his target with the stone he through

It made contact with the head of a great wyvern that flew

Although it was uninjured, its attention had been caught

And the monsters reaction was exactly what Leaf sought

The Dark Wolves didn’t noticed the true target of the rock

But the wyvern was just one among quite a large wyvern flock

And as the Leader jumped toward Leaf with his open jaws

Wyverns started swooping down to grab wolves with their claws

The leader just ignored the cries of those the wyverns took

Leaf’s neck was the only thing at which the wolf would look

But now that the circle had been broken, he could run

Weaving in an out of wolves and wyverns one by one

The Leader gave chase right away but on an open plain

It had no chance catching him there where he used to train

He headed for the treeline without looking back at all

The Dark Wolves howled but he had little interest in their call
