《Unliving》Chapter 13 - News from Home

"It is often amusing to see new nations rise, then fall apart, often within a few generations. People stood united when they had a common cause, or better yet a common enemy to rally against, but once those were gone or diminished, and peace took hold? Then people start to entertain other thoughts they would not have had before the peace, thoughts that often lead to disunity and separation. Because of this, so-called golden ages rarely last long, for it was in times of plenty that such divisive thoughts forment the most." - Emir ibn Khalif Elam El-Ehr, beloved ruler of the Assadun Emirate, circa 72 VA.
Palace of bones, Tohrmutgent, Ptolodecca, fourthday of the third week of the sixth month, year 37 VA.
"Do you think grandpa and father will be fine?" Aideen asked as her staff met Diarnuid'd axe just below where the blade connected to the shaft, pulled, and shifted the trajectory of his blow off to the side, while the other end of her staff swung towards his knee with the same movement. "It worries me that there have still been riots back home… It's been over two years now!"
"Uncle Caelleach's influence was stronger than we had thought, I guess," replied Diarmuid as he untangled his axe from his sister's staff and took a short leap back to avoid her counterstrike. They had taken to sparring with each other in their free time often as of late, and Diarmuid was surprised again by just how much his little sister had grown.
The same little sister who was once the laziest when it came to self defense classes now gave him a run for his money, and regularly beat him silly instead. "Many amongst the rural populace still held more… radical hatred to all undead, whereas those in La Fiachna were mostly descended or knew some of grandfather's inner circle, and thus knew of mother's aid during the revolution back then."
"It just saddens me so, to see our people fight each other just over this," continued Aideen as she pursued and thrust her staff at her brother's chest. Both of them used real weapons in their spar, which was a much less risky idea when one considered how Aideen had so far proven nearly impervious to physical damage ever since she rose as an Unliving. On the other hand, any injury she gives to her brother, she can just fix with ease in moments. "Gallowsweihg would have descended into open rebellion, if Antemeia had not attacked at the time."

"Having a common enemy and lord Brenegan's showing off helped calm that one down, yeah," Diarmuid admitted as he pushed his sister's thrust to the side and caught the staff under his armpit. Gallowsweihg was a fort town built near the border with Antemeia, which had almost descended into rebellion a year and a half ago, but calmed down and peacefully reintegrated after they turned away a probing attack from Antemeia together with the main army. That Brenegan had joined the expedition and helped eradicate the Antemeian army in a bombastic manner helped as well. "Brother Faerghus also did well in the negotiations that happened afterwards."
"I just wished they'd have us informed of such news sooner," Aideen said as she twisted her staff and separated it into three sections joined by chains, and assailed her brother with the other end. Earlier this morning they had received a letter from Vitalica, which unlike the usual well wishes and small talk, actually also included a summary of the political situation of the past two and a half years since their departure. "I still can't believe Aunt Megarea was the traitor in the council…"
"I have heard stories that some people became dependent on their masters before- ouch!" Said Diarnuid as the metal staff struck him on his side hard enough to crack a rib or two. Aideen had held it by the middle staff and swung it like a flail, which gave the blow a lot of force behind it. He had now let go of her trapped staff and withdrew a couple steps to gain distance, while his sister spun her three-sectioned staff around expertly. "As I was saying, Aunt Megarea might be one such person. They had not caught her yet either, so for all we know she might have run to Junora by now."
"That is a possibility," admitted Aideen as she waited and invited her brother to go into the attack. She had remembered the councilwoman as a grim-faced, but kind elder from when she was young, so her betrayal felt personal to her. Doubly so since that betrayal technically resulted in her death - and her subsequent rise into what she has become. "If I ever see her again, I only wish to ask her myself why she did it."

"Who knows?" Diarmuid said while he shrugged. He had done a couple feints but his sister refused to bite into those, so he was racking his brain on how to get past those whirling staves. His magic was also rendered useless, as unlike regular undead, which he could eradicate as long as he poured in more magic than what the controller had in their subject, or living people, against whom death magic was very effective, Aideen just ignored it entirely. He finally had an idea and threw a black mist of concentrated death magic at her face to block her sight while he moved in. "At least seeing you so lively now helps alleviate the guilt I feel over my failure to keep you safe back then."
"There was nothing to be forgiven, brother," replied Aideen as she dispersed the mist with her own magic, infused through her staff. By then Diarmuid's axe had closed in, so she did something he didn't expect instead, and threw herself onto the incoming axe. The blade bit deep into the left side of her chest, bisected a lung, before it got jammed between her chest bone and two of her ribs. Her left hand grasped the handle and prevented Diarmuid from pulling the weapon out, while her right gripped her staff by one end and swung it like a three-sectioned flail at him. "You have done your best, please stop blaming yourself for it."
"I still- Argh! Fucking Dogshit!" Disrmuid cursed as the staves landed, the middle section slammed over his shoulder with enough force to crack his collar bone, and the impact just propelled the third section harder. The tip of the third section landed hard on the middle of his back, and he lost feeling below his waist as he crumpled to the floor under the blow. "Shit, that hurt! You win, sister, fix me up please!"
"Okay~" agreed Aideen playfully. Their spars always ended with one of them literally crippled and unable to fight anymore, usually Diarmuid. It looked like overly cruel training to some, but their grandpa believed in harsh training for best results, and considering their improvements over the past couple years, Aideen and Diarmuid agreed with him. Their mother had grown under their grandpa's care and naturally agreed with him as well, though father might have been horrified by the sight. "Hold still now, spines are always a bit tricky to fix right."
Carefully, Aideen guided her magic to her brother's body, and tended the broken bones with gentleness. She placed extra attention at his spine, and concentrated as she reconnected the broken pathways that resulted from her strike. Many life affinity healers were left powerless by spinal injuries, with most victims unable to walk properly again even after healing. She found early on however, that her affinity was far more effective at fixing those damages. "How do you feel now?"
"Good as new, thanks," said Diarmuid as he wriggled his toes to show her. "The way your healing changed with the affinity really is something… also, can you get to fixing that already? It's disturbing to look at."
"Oh right, almost forgot that," Aideen said as she slowly pulled out Diarmuid's axe from her chest. Trickles of blood flowed out of the wound, while some more stained the axe, but she had not even winced at the pain it caused. What pain cuts and blades caused paled in comparison to the pain of bones broken into tiny pieces, after all. Within moments the wound had closed up, the blood going back inside her body and left even Diarmuid's axe clean and shining.
She did have to cover her chest with a hand for modesty though, as the cut had sliced through her left breast, and now that it was healed, left it quite exposed since she couldn't repair her torn tunic as well.

Fantasy World Epsilon 30-10
New Dive Assignment: 0B5 Personnel: Citizen of Gamma G-037-072 Jonathan Kelly World Designation: Epsilon H-037-072-030-010 Classification: Pre-industrial Exotic World, significant outliers in biosphere including atypical flora and fauna. Quarantine protocol in effect pending more data and acclimation testing. Further anomalies include populations of morphologically distinct humanoids, and aberrations in otherwise normative physics laws. Causal chain appears provisionally stable. For the purposes of delaying onset of collapse as well as above mentioned factors, only one subject is cleared to Dive. Initial mandates shall proceed with scouting and surveillance. Further details are classified. Warning: All other qualifying personnel are currently dispatched. Refusal will result in deployment delays and possible unsupervised causal decay. Do you wish to accept this assignment? Note to Readers: This is not MC isolated in a new world. This is new world joins the multiverse. What I'm tentatively coining Subverted Isekai (Formerly I used 'reversed' but, as pointed out, that would be fantasy MC goes to the modern world. Hey, there's idea! Not this book though.). There is plenty of scientific and philosophical stuff; I know that can be a turn off for some. It has a strong bearing on the story, but is mainly covered in the 'Comments & Calculations' section (optional reading of course). If you are looking for an extreme suspension of natural laws with no technical considerations, you will not find it here. Formatting Notes: Audio chatter from characters that are not currently in the scene I format in "inverted commas and italics". Given the layered nature of modern communication, I thought this distinction was best denoted visually in my prose. Critique is welcome. Language Notes Jon is a South African ex-pat. As such he will use some Afrikaans colloquialisms plus a dash of Japanese. Most importantly he says “Ja” meaning “Yes”. Pronounced with a J sound like “yo” and an A sound like “bar”. As in: “Yo, let’s go to the strip bar.” “Ja.” And not the Rastafarian /jya/. Other words: Nee - /niya/ : no Juffrou - /yif-row/ : Miss Lekker - /lacker/ : nice, good, delicious Nooit - /noit/: never The rest is mostly swear words. Indisputably the most useful words in any language and simultaneously holding the least innate meaning. Fok - “fork” without the “r”: fuck Bliksem - /Bluksim/: darn, damn. Also common noun meaning damn person or thing. Donner - “Dorner” without the “r”: originally meaning thunder, can also mean darn or damn. It is often used as a verb meaning: ‘to hit hard’ Kak - /kuck/: shit Voetsek - /foot-sack/: go away

Child of Dusk
Life can be cruel, especially to those who don't fit in. But what would you do if you were given a second chance? Tim was a nobody during his time on Earth. As a penniless orphan with no friends to speak of, life was tough for him in his little Arizona town in the '90s. He'd utterly lost hope for the future until one day, he was reincarnated as Alvanue, beloved daughter and heir to the Starlit Throne of Silthonduen. Now, Alvanue has everything a princess could ever want: a loving family, loyal comrades and an entire kingdom at her finger tips. But what good is a kingdom when there's a whole world of magic and mystery out there to explore? *** Ok! Disclaimer time. I do edit my own work and I do not have a beta reader, so please feel free to point out any errors or plot holes (politely, of course). Each chapter will be around 4,000 to 6,000 words long and while I was posting every day at the beginning, I think I'll cut that down to once a week for now, excluding bonus chapters! I really don't want to get burned out. I started writing this because I love world building, so this is gonna be heavy on lore. If you're not into that, there's still a ton of character progression and action to look forward to! It's going to be slow at the beginning, but I promise it will pick up eventually. Thanks for checking my story out, I appreciate it a lot!

YAOS 1 - Limitless Adventures - Yet Another OP Story Book 1
December 23rd 2018: Book 1 is now up at Smashwords and at Amazon. December 30th 2018: V1.1.2 of YAOS Book 1 is out, some content additions, fixed typos. Amazon's enhanced typesetting now displays tables properly. YAOS is shown through the eyes of some genius athlete getting OP inside a VR, ah wait, Full Immersion game, ?F.I.O?. Not a Hero, not a Nerd, just a driven individual paying for mistakes made, biding time until he can return to the Real World. He isn't defined like you'd normally do it, you can pick his looks and name all on your own, just like you do in video games. Believe it or not, keeping his looks undefined is harder than you think. His backstory isn't expounded in detail, but it drives his choices. Book 1 isn't about depressing sob stories but about fun and rushing forward, pursuing new horizons. Oh, and you'll end on a cliffhanger! Well, most serials do, so you will probably expect that without being told explicitly. But it isn't that bad, there's a lot of reveals and more to come once this book, that is the first in a planned three-part series, is finally ready for release on amazon et al. The published version will have: 1.) Godawful speaker tags, I hate them, they make you stop thinking and speed up editing so much. In hindsight they should have been in to begin with. But I stand by my goals proclaimed earlier. You guys should think while reading, that is the whole point of the exercise. Apply the knowledge and ideas, improve yourself, get creative! 2.) Pretty colored tables, the damned blue boxes, a lot of work, 69 in one book. Finally fixed amazon's centering issue. Can't say I liked the hours needed to debug that. 3.) The promised Mitara chapters. 4.) A cover! 5.) And lastly, updated polished versions of several chapters. MC shares more of his past, some terrible chapters (esp. 32) finally work. Some new scenes, minor rewrites in parts. Text flow and other issues. The current challenge is to maintain essential ambiguity while satisfying people wanting to know more without thinking three steps ahead. Balancing one with the other is tough. The smut which was in remains, but the story told is not to be superseded by it. A 15+ rating for the first book is also important, not to mention, YAOS wasn't meant to contain any smut to begin with. If the Author can turn to writing full time his output should increase, so please support YAOS #1 once it does finally release. ~Thank You~ No maps so far, that should be in, but is really hard to get done right. Again, tips are appreciated. Update September 2017: Stubbed chapters, sorry guys, currently don't have time to upload them elsewhere, polishing book 1 and 2, writing 3, takes precedence. Book 1 is in heavy editing, too much to keep synced and continuing editing. I'd need a site which offers JS-free rapid managing of chapters and comments. Coding one myself or setting a premade up is out of scope until I'm done with the books. RRL-old offered that, nuff said. This is only here because the author believes in fairies, nobody reads this, most likely. October to December 2017: Life threw some curveballs. February 2018: Book 2 draft 1 completed, at ~150K words. Book 2 is fairly epic in scope, requires 1 rewritten chapter, some editing. Tables and miscellanea are in, but needs at least a grammar pass. March 2018: Book 3 at 28k words, first arc, rest needs serious planning for spin-off and satisfying conclusion. July 2018: Yet another proofing/editing session of books 1-3, 101+ chapters, ~300k words. B3 at 48k, starts out great, but no ETA, no wordcount limit, in flux. But prioritizing my writing cannot be done, I hate the delays as much as you, but you will prefer the whole released in a timely fashion rather than wait. Knowing myself how excruciating waiting can be, at least you'll get significantly polished versions and an ETA on book 2 by release of book 1. December 23rd 2018: Book 1 is now up at Smashwords and in the process at Amazon et. al.. . To all who wait patiently, offered feedback, thanks again!
