《Soulmancer》Chapter 23: Casual Game

"Rock, paper, knife?"

"Yes." Kun unstrapped his arm braces, prompting loud clunks and clanks between the metal of the armor to the wooden deck. He then raised his hand once they were put aside. "Ready?"

"Wait, what's a knife?" Mat said. In a game of supposedly rock, paper, scissors, the knife thing was very new to him.

Kun raised an index finger then pointed it towards Mat like he was aiming down a gun barrel. "This is a knife. Damn, you really aren't from this world are you?"

Mat copied Kun's gesture, pointing his index finger towards Kun in turn. "Yeah, I've come a long way from where I was originally from."

"Alright. You ready?"

"Yup." Mat brought out his hand.

"Wait, was your hand always like that?"

"Like what?" Mat turned his gaze to his hand, seeing that he accidentally brought out his crippled, glowing green arm where his summons were staying inside. "Oh. I'll tell you when you beat me."

Kun let out a hearty laugh. "Sassy, I like that."

The first round of rock, paper, and knife started. Mat took out a knife to Kun's rock. The first win was given to Kun.

"Truth or dare?" Kun smiled.

Mat opted for truth. He didn't have anything he had to hide, and dares were always nasty whichever world he was in. He remembered a certain dare on the night before being transported into this new world; his friends were egging him to call his girlfriend. Needless to say, it all didn't go too well.

"Alright, first question." Kun pointed to Mat's arm. "What happened to that?"

Mat explained the events that led to where his current arm's condition is now. The broken mana vessel, the frostfire lich, and the likes. He also brought out the topic of his summons living inside his hand, with them the main driving force of his hand glowing a green glow.

"That's interesting." Kun brought up a finger to his chin. Mat stared off Kun before turning to Youmu beside him. The way he moved resembled her so perfectly- they really were siblings.

Next came the second round of rock, paper, knife. Mat brought out again a knife, hoping this time the results would be different. It wasn't. Kun brought out a rock again.

The same as before, Mat opted for truth.

"Next question." Kun said. "How did you get here?"

Mat didn't know the answer to that, as he woke up in this world with no recollection of how and why he got here. So he told him what he could only give out. "I don't know."

Kun exchanged glances with Youmu before turning back to Mat, nodding to each other like Sherlock and Watson. "That sounds exactly like Bob and Tyler's situation."

"Who?"

"The twins over there." Kun gestured to the front area of the boat where the twin boys were hanging around. "They came into this world a year ago, same as you, and their situation then was your exact situation now."

That was a bombshell Kun just dropped on Mat. Bob and Tyler, these names were also pretty common back in his own world. In fact, they were way too common. Bob and Tyler, of all the names their parents could choose, they chose those two. Mat almost felt sorry for them.

Those two, hopefully, were from Earth. To get some answers as to how and why Mat came to be here, the twins were his tickets to that. Some of the questions running all around his head could finally be put to rest, as long as the twins were willing to answer them for him. There was also the chance that the twins really weren't from Earth and it was just a so and so coincidence, but Mat wanted to talk with them later.

"Alright, final round." Kun raised his hand. Mat also had some questions he wanted to ask Kun, and it'd be pretty lackluster if the game of truth or dare ended on a 0-3 score. At least, he wanted a win.

This time, Mat brought out a rock. But Kun outplayed him again, bringing out a paper.

"Unlucky." Mat sighed. He really wanted at least one win, but luck didn't favor him this time.

"You sure it was luck?" Kun gave him a sheepish smile.

"What do you mean?"

"I'm saying, I can sense your aura."

"How does that work?"

"Training and practice." Kun let out a hearty laugh. He really was an easy-going dude. With the looks to match, it's no wonder why Ruan fell for him. Mat wanted to ask why they broke up using his supposed win, but he didn't win, so he had to ask Kun a later time.

"Well, that's that. Truth or dare?"

"Still truth."

"Boring." Kun let out a tantrum. "Boring. Boring. Boring."

He kept this on for a while, like a broken record saying the same things over and over and over again. He was pretty obnoxious with it, not stopping even after multiple warnings from Youmu.

"Alright, fine." Mat threw up his hands. Even if it was a dare, it likely wasn't anything too serious. Maybe lick the dirty wooden deck or try to kiss someone nearby. Those were the classics back in the day. "Dare."

"Nice one." Kun then stood up, pushing himself off the ground with a grunt. He picked up his arm braces and helmet from the ground. He then strapped the braces on over his arm's length, buckling the belts and fastenings as he put on his metal helm over his head. It was like he was getting ready for a fight.

The sun was fast falling over the horizon, coloring the world in blood orange. Against the gleam of the sun, Kun's face was overshadowed by the helmet he wore.

"Let's fight, you and me." Kun broke the pause between them. He brought out his spear from thin air, like a sleight of hand trick. But the thing here was, it didn't look to be anything like a trick. Silence once again overtook the atmosphere between them, with all eyes now locked onto the two with just the hum of the engine below and the whizzing breeze passing by warding off the complete silence.

"Wait, what?"
