《Digital Marine》Ch: 86 Tryouts part two

The Sergeant called Mother blinked as she entered the conference room. She hated how some people could adjust as soon as they exited the white light while others like herself had to take a second or so to focus. She found herself in a small, plain conference room that was dominated by a single, long, rectangular table. At the head of the table sat her new boss, the intelligence agent Captain Thompson. To her surprise her boss wasn’t alone. Standing just behind and looking down over the Captain’s shoulder was a short, chubby man in a plain camo uniform. He was lacking any rank or military designation on his light armor. She knew only one branch who wore that type of uniform and she had a bad feeling about her platoon’s role in the upcoming mission.
“Ma’am.” Mother said coming to attention. She watched as the other two people in the room looked up and seemed to just now notice her.
“Sergeant Syku, good. Come sit down. I want to go over some things with you before you start training your platoon.” The Captain said with a slight smile.
“Ma’am, before we do that I have some concerns.” Mother said, relaxing her stance.
“I’ll get to Mr. Smith in a second.” Thompson said, looking down again at her screen.
“That would help, but no. My main concern is Corporal O'Malley.” Mother said, not moving from her position.
“What did Magic do this time?” Thompson said, smiling as she looked back at her.
“Ma’am. I’ve heard some rumors.” Mother stated, trying to be polite.
To her irritation Thompson started laughing. “I see. She gets that a lot.” The Captain said as her laughter tapered off.
“Ma’am, with all due respect. She scored a ninety-nine percent accuracy while suffering from the effects of medi pen overdose. That’s not taking into account the fact that her gun doesn't have any aim assist. On her first shot she discovered the kill area on a warrior. I don’t usually take rumors, especially from some run down Sergeant, but there is no way she’s that good.” Mother said trying to get her new boss to understand while not getting on her bad side.
To her irritation, the Captain started laughing again. “How many medipens did she take this time?”
“Three.” She replied.
“You should have seen what she did on four. Then you would have really been worried.” The Captain said, shaking her head.
“Ma’am?” She asked, completely confused.
“Let’s just say she’s really that good and leave it at that.” Thompson said in a commanding voice.
“Yes, ma’am.” Mother said, trying not to let her emotions show on her face.
“She cleared?” The psyops man asked, looking at Captain Thompson.
“She’s on this mission, so yes. If you tell her it’s on you.” Thompson said, giving the man a look.
“She may become a problem if we don’t tell her.” The agent replied.
“Fine. Sergeant Syku, Mother, I understand you’re looking into a transfer to the intelligence service. Keeping that in mind, this does not leave this room. Also, I suggest you get a better poker face than what you have now. If he can read every emotion on your face, so can someone else.”
“Yes, Ma’am.” She replied, feeling slightly embarrassed while at the same time she was also trying to figure out what a ‘poker face’ was.
“Corporal O’Malley is one of the most powerful short term clairvoyants that I have ever read about. Her accuracy is amazingly high and her range, which in other cases is normally only a few seconds, has shown accuracy up to two years as far as we have been able to measure. We are still waiting on confirmation on other things she has seen. She is also not hampered by the normal psychological breaks that most psychics have when encountering violence.” The Psyops agent said, looking at her.

“If that’s true, then why isn’t she wearing your uniform, sir?” Mother asked the agent, trying desperately not to anger the agent and her new boss.
“She's new and she doubts herself.” The agent replied, shrugging.
“Look, Sergeant, I commanded Magic during my last tour of duty. She’s really that good. I know you want to get back to your platoon, and I have more paperwork than I can shake a stick at. Let’s move on. Now about our mission.” Thompson told her, looking down at the tabletop.
Mother mentally shrugged, knowing from past experience when to back down, and swallowed her pride. She looked down as the tabletop changed into a map of the planet Karma. This wasn’t the first time she’d been attached to an intelligence mission before. Granted, it was the first time she had ever encountered a psyops agent, but in the end it was still just a mission. When she was first informed that she would be working under an intelligence officer she was beyond excited. She liked their types of missions. In fact, she had her eyes on getting promoted, so that she could transfer into the intelligence service. If this mission went well, both those goals were looking very likely.
“We have two mission goals. Our first is to escort our psyops friend here, so he can do his job without problems. Our second goal, which is secondary to our first, is to find any survivors, and get them to safety. We will try to get them off-planet during the assault from the October, if we can. The Navy will have assault shuttles ready, on-call, for us during that time.” The Captain explained.
“Once the civilians are gone, we will be staying on-planet to help with the assault. Mr Smith, here, will be calling our objectives, but I’m in overall charge of the operation. Mr. Smith will not be fighting, nor will he be anywhere near the violence if possible. He is a non-combatant. If a fight breaks out near him, we are to escort Mr Smith someplace else. With that in mind, I want one fireteam whose job it is to babysit him and nothing else. Understood?” Thompson said, looking up at her.
“I can handle violence as long as I’m not doing a read.” The psyops agent said, sounding slightly upset. “I am an agent, you understand.”
“What’s his job, if you don’t mind me asking, Ma’am?” Mother asked, ignoring the agent while trying to get all the details worked out. After all, she knew there were many types of psychics in the universe.
“I’m a telepath. My speciality is alien readings.” Mr. Smith replied, looking at her.
Mother fought to get her thoughts under control. The last thing she wanted was for the man to read her thoughts and see something that she really didn’t want him to read from her. She knew she failed when he smiled. To her surprise it wasn’t a creepy smile, but a tired-looking one. He shook his head and shrugged.
“I’m a touch telepath. Hence the gloves.” He told her, raising his gloved hands. “Your thoughts are your own. The last thing I want to do is read a human.” He told her, shuddering.
“Our goal is to capture a Ketica officer for Mr. Smith. He is going to do a read. Our primary goal is to protect him at all costs.” Thompson told her, drawing her attention away from the telepath across from her.
“And the civilians?” Mother asked, trying to see how dark this mission was going to get. She knew from past experience that sometimes the mission comes before saving people.
“If we know he can respawn without problems, then civilians first. If he gets zeroed out with a denial sphere in the area then the mission is a failure. We need to understand why the Ketica are attacking. We can’t do it without him.” Thompson told her.
Mother also knew what her boss was leaving out, and that was that they also needed to know how best to hurt them for both this mission and later in the future. She sat back, and nodded her understanding. She looked down again at the map, and noted that it didn’t show where the enemy was. It also showed normal-looking, undamaged, human cities. She knew that wasn’t the case anymore. She also knew what that meant. They were going in blind. She hated when that happened.
She sat back as Thompson went over logistics and other minor stuff that was essential to the mission. Mr. Smith didn’t say anything else during the meeting. While the Captain talked, Mother mentally went over who she needed to cut and who she wanted to watch during the next tryout mission. As soon as the Captain was done with her, she left. She headed towards the door to the conference room, thinking about how much work was ahead of her and her platoon. She knew she still needed to cut fifteen more people from the platoon and take Magic off the cut list before she respawned. If she was a psychic like the psyops creep had said, then she really wanted her in her platoon. The score that Magic had racked up was the best she had ever seen, and if she could get Magic to repeat that in the real world that would be beyond amazing. With stars in her eyes, Mother eagerly stepped into the light.
Freya sighed, closing her eyes in pleasure as she walked out of the white light and back into the camp. She felt the afterglow of the post-mission high as it hit her. Her back felt normal again and she didn’t feel exhausted any longer. She loved the feeling she got when she came back from missions.
Behind her closed eyes a slew of notifications popped up. The first one was about her ship getting destroyed. It only mentioned her briefly to say that she was the pilot and that she was not onboard when it was blown up. It laid the blame on Drake for its deployment position, but it noted that she came up with the plan. The way it was written, it didn’t seem that bad, as the First Lieutenant who did the investigation wrote that it was a wave mission with a low probability of the ship surviving to return to the October.
Once she finished reading the investigation she looked over at her mission rewards. While they were way better than tier 1 missions, they still lacked the wow factor of a tier 3 mission, let alone a real world mission. She did get a lot of bonus for all sorts of things like finding the kill area on the warriors and killing the last enemy in the mission. She smiled at some of the rewards. She got a big bonus for killing the most warriors in the mission. She didn’t expect that, as she was using a single fire weapon and many of the heavy assault people had bigger and faster-shooting guns. That was not even taking into account the demo people with their mines and mortars. She finished reading her awards and knew it was time to face reality.
Reluctantly, she opened her eyes and looked around for the rest of the platoon.
She found them standing around in several small groups. It took her a second to realize that the platoon was much smaller than it had been before. Feeling a zing of fear she looked around for her friends. She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding as she spotted Monkeyman and Lurch standing around talking to Cannon. Smiling, she walked over to their group.
Monkeyman spotted her first, even though he was the only one in the group who had his back to her. He turned his head and smiled at her as she got close to them. Lurch also looked in her direction and smiled when he saw her. Cannon was the last one to notice her and gave her a neutral nod. She had to admit it was better than a grumpy expression that she had been expecting.
“How many are left?” Cannon asked, looking behind Freya.
“I didn’t see anyone else, but they could have been hiding out in the desert. I don’t know.” Freya replied, getting an odd look back from Cannon when she said that.
“What?” She asked Cannon, after seeing the odd look she gave her.
“Nothing.” Cannon said, giving her a shrug.
“So my shiv, how did you do?” Monkeyman asked her. “I survived longer than ma man Lurch here.” Freya liked how he said my, with a hard A sound instead a Y sound so it sounded like may-man.
“Only by two minutes.” Lurch replied, sounding annoyed. “And please don't call me my man again. It makes it sound like we’re going out with each other.”
“Good call with moving the people around. Saved some lives.” Cannon said, completely ignoring the by-play between Monkeyman and Lurch, as Monkeyman was trying to kiss Lurch while Lurch was holding him off at arms-length.
“Thanks.” Freya replied, as Lurch twisted out of the way, sending Monkeyman off to the side where he fell down. Freya watched them out of the corner of her eye, but did note how well Lurch performed at hand-to-hand combat. She knew she could take him based on skill, but it would be a tough fight.
“On me.” Mother’s voice called out and Freya turned her head to see her platoon leader walking up to the platoon. Lurch held out his hand and helped Monkeyman up as they started walking towards Mother.
“As you can see, there are a few less people with us now. The problem is that I need to cut more of you, so Sergeant Kruz has talked me into another mission to give a few of you more time to prove yourself to me. Let me be upfront with all of you, though. There are only two people in this platoon, as of right now. That’s me and Kruz. Everybody else, you’re all just visiting here. I can and will cut you if I feel you don’t have what it takes to be in my platoon. That being said, some of you are closer to getting cut than others. I suggest you all up your game on this next mission.” Mother told them.
“Your next mission will start thirty minutes after we are done here. It’s a search and rescue mission. You have two days to find a bunch of civilians and you’ll be tasked with keeping them alive for four days afterwards, until a rescue can be accomplished. This is an infiltration mission, so no OTIDS. You will spawn on the planet. Expect the same enemies from the wave mission and plan accordingly. Some of you need better weapons. Get them. As before, Kruz and myself will not be on this mission, but we will be observing you. Rating how well you do.” Mother said looking at each and everyone in the eye as she spoke.
“Magic.” Mother called out, looking right at Freya.
“Yes, Sergeant.” Freya replied standing straighter, not quite at attention, but close.
“I invited another pilot for this mission, but he declined. That makes you our pilot for this one. Get with the squad leaders and send me a flight path and deployment area before you leave.” Mother told her with a nod.
“Keep doing what you’re doing and you’re in. Screw up and I’ll find someone else to fly us around. Understood?” She said, speaking much softer.
“Yes, ma’am.” Freya replied, trying not to smile.
“Kruz.” Mother said, nodding at her second in command.
“Thanks, boss.” Kruz said, before turning to the rest of the platoon. Mother, Freya noted, didn’t stick around for the rest of the meeting. She left as soon as Kruz started speaking to the platoon.
“My squad leaders are as follows. Drake, you got first squad. Unicorn you got second. Fred you got third squad and you’ll be overall in charge of this mission. Dess, you got fourth. You will stay in your same fireteams as before, with a few exceptions.” Kruz said and called out a few names, putting them into other fireteams. Freya noted that Kruz left their fireteam intact. She smiled at Monkeyman and Lurch when Kruz got done with organizing the teams.
“Command staff with me.” Fred said, as Kruz got done talking and told him he was now in charge before she left, walking towards the barracks Mother had disappeared into a few minutes ago. She did set up a portable holo table and put the mission map on it before she left, though.
Freya joined the rest of the command staff around the table and looked at the map. The mission area was about four hundred square miles, in an irregular-shaped circle. The north and east part of the map was covered in a mountain range that was made up of three mountains. That meant that they would have to check the entire mountain range. And going by how big the mountains were it was going to be a big task if they had to get it done in two days. The rest of the map was covered in a biohazard label that warned about high ammonia gas levels in the form of vapor. It wouldn’t be a problem for the marines, since their armor was self-contained, but it could be an obstacle if the people they were sent off to rescue didn’t have the proper protective gear. They might not have the two days that the mission stated. Looking around, she noted that everyone else had already come to that conclusion.
“That mountain range is going to be a beast to search.” Unicorn said, pointing at the map.
“Yeah, I was planning on putting three squads on the range and have one search the valley.” Fred said, his eyes not looking away from the map.
“So, we dropping one platoon off in the valley, and have the dropship on the middle mountain?” Drake asked.
“If no one has any objections, that’s the plan.” Fred replied.
“I’ll take the valley.” Dess, a woman that hadn’t been a squad leader in the wave mission, said to the group. “I’ll split my teams up and do a grid search. Shouldn’t take too long.”
Seeing Bess, Freya looked around, but didn’t see any of the other squad leaders who had been in the wave mission still with the platoon. That made her wonder what the other squad leaders did to get let go. Then that made her wonder what Bess did to get promoted to squad leader when her last squad leader had been fired. She shook her head, and forced herself to listen in to Fred as he talked about the plan.
“Just be careful. I expect that we won’t be the only people searching for the civilians.” Fred said, finally looking up from the map.
“Understood.” Dess said nodding.
“I’ll take the north mountain. It’s the smallest so I can do it fast and come help whoever is taking the big one.” Unicorn said pointing towards the middle and largest mountain.
“Magic is still in my squad, so I’ll take the middle one.” Drake told them.
“That leaves the one furthest east for me.” Fred replied. “Anyone have anything else to add?”
When no one said anything he nodded and turned to Freya. “Get me that flight path and where you want to deploy, Magic. I want it about halfway up the mountain on the southwest side facing the valley. Expect enemy patrols both ground and air so keep that in mind when you pick your LZ.”
“Yes, Sergeant.” Freya replied, already looking for a good spot to put down. Her eyes were drawn towards a river that had carved out a canyon in the mountain. It was wide enough for her ship to fit and still have some cover, as part of the canyon was enclosed by rock. She ran the numbers as the command staff split up, and smiled. It would be tight, but she knew she could fit.
She sat down beside Darke as he went over what the mission was how and they were going to get it done. She quickly drew up her flightpath, and, on a whim, added a few seconds so that she had time to avoid any anti-ship weapons. She also added an extended flight once she was close to the ground to give her room to obscure where she was going to land. She finished and sent the flightplan off to everyone just as Drake was finishing up his plans on who was doing what. She made sure to add what order she was going to spawn the squads in with her flightplan, as it just made sense to her even though she had never done it before.
“If you need to visit a shop, I suggest you get it done. We got twenty-two minutes until mission start.” Drake was saying as Freya put her tablet away and stood up.
That made her remember about her ammo situation and a few other things she thought of during the wave mission. She turned to Monkeyman, who looked deep in thought. Lurch on the other hand was talking to Cannon about what type of drones she wanted for the search part of the mission.
“I need to hit the weapons shop.” She said to the group. “I need to take more ammo with me with my new rifle.”
“I’ll come with you.” Monkeyman said looking up. “I need a few tags and copper tops.”
“Let’s pretend I understood what you said, and sure, you can come with me.” Freya said, with a sarcastic smile.
“Tags are slang for things that go boom, and copper tops are detonators.” He told her with a big smile.
“Sounds good.” Freya replied, shaking her head.
“Y’all good?” She asked Lurch and Cannon.
“Yeah, you guys go ahead. I got everything I need.” Lurch told her before turning to resume his conversation with Cannon.
Cannon waved at them to leave, saying, “I’m good.”
“So what kind of tags are you looking for?” Freya asked Monkeyman, as they walked towards the camp’s door.
“The kind that has a very big boom. My last stuff did okay, but was kind of weak. I need something stronger if we face more Warriors.” Monkeyman admitted.
“Sounds good. Let’s go find you something that has a bigger boom.” Freya said playfully, making him smile.
Fifteen minutes later they arrived back at camp. Monkeyman was walking and reading an instruction manual at the same time. Freya had to admire how he never walked into anything as he did so. He seemed to preternaturally know when he was about to walk into something and turn just in time. She gave up trying to figure out how he did it once they got back to camp, as she couldn’t see how he was doing it. Her best guess was that he was looking out of the corner of his eyes while at the same time focusing on reading the mini tablet on his arm.
Freya looked around and found the platoon broken down again into groups. Cannon was with Drake’s group of what looked like all the fireteam leaders. Lurch was standing in a group where Unicorn was telling a really funny story, going by how everyone was laughing. The groups didn’t seem to be broken down by squads, but that made it worse for Freya as she had no idea which group to join. Monkeyman saved her as he looked up and nodded for her to follow him towards a group that was off to the side. She wondered why it wasn’t the group with Lurch, but followed him anyway.
As they walked up to the group, one of the guys sitting on the ground spotted her and waved at her. “Hey, you're a full sniper right?”
“Yup.” Freya replied as she watched Monkeyman sit on the ground, still reading his manual.
“Great, I got a question on the search pattern my team leader wants us to follow. It’s in the book, but I think that there is a better way. Do you mind if I run it by you?” He asked her.
It was only then that she realized how the groups were broken up. She looked around and noted that everyone in this group were scouts, except for Monkeyman, who didn’t seem to want to be bothered by anyone anyway. She felt grateful towards Monkeyman for seeing it as she listened in on what the scout had to say. In the end, she thought his way was better and recommended he talk to his fireteam leader about it.
Once she got him sorted out, she got asked another question. This time, the scout wanted to know what kind of ammo he should carry on this mission. Freya asked him if he had any long-range beam rifles instead. She explained about how fast she found the lizards and how they could avoid ballistic weapons, but seemed unable to dodge a beam round. The questions only ended when Fred called out for them to get into squads in front of the lobby door. Freya joined in with her fireteam and waited her turn. Soon she made it to the front of the lobby and walked into the light. And found herself in her hangar facing a smiling Diaz.
“How's my favorite bullet catcher?” Diaz said walking towards Freya.
“Doing good.” Freya replied with a smile. “How goes it with you?”
“Oh, you know, building someone a brand new ship as fast as I can after she wrecked her last one.” Diaz said, looking off to the side and shrugging.
“I am so sorry.” Freya said, horrified at not remembering that Diaz would have to rebuild her dropship. She knew she should have, but for some reason she just hadn’t thought about it.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s giving me a nice bump in experience.” Diaz said, waving her hand in the air.
“Hey Diaz, my potential new squad leader asked me to look into getting ten respawn pods. Now I’m pretty sure we can’t fit any more in this ship, so I was thinking of getting a new one.” Freya said, as the two of them started walking towards the dropship.
“First, can you afford a new ship, and if you can, what were you thinking of getting?” Diaz asked, looking excited.
“I can and I haven't had the time to look, but maybe something like this one.” Freya replied.
“Well, are you planning on selling this one on the open market?” Diaz asked. “Because, if you weren't, I think you should keep it. I mean, do you need the money from selling her?” Diaz asked. “And, if not, can you get your people to loan you the money, so you can keep her?”
“I hadn’t thought about it, why?” Freya asked, not understanding where Diaz was going.
“Well, I noticed that you don’t have any Mechs sitting in your hangar anymore. That can free up some space on your new ship. Now hear me out. First, I would like to get rid of the Mech rearming ammo pod on your new ship and replace it with a conventional one. It will save you a lot of money and space. Also, I love how fast this ship is, but there is some new stealth tech out there that will make any ship that has it ten times more stealthy.”
“Sounds awesome, but why should I keep the old one?” Freya asked, not really wanting to sell her ship, but wanted to know why Diaz didn’t want her to sell it.
“The new tech power requirements are pretty high. You’ll need a bigger generator to power it. That will draw away from your engines so it won’t go as fast. But from what I’m seeing, your new platoon will want a quieter ship versus a loud fast ship like the one you have, but there might be times where a fast ship might be better.” Diaz told her, as Freya started walking around her rebuilt ship, doing her outside checkoffs.
“Just how slow will that tech make it?” Freya asked, frowning.
“It’s not too bad. You can still go two thirds as fast as this one if you get the new stealth package, but you won’t have the space for vehicle docking locks.” Diaz replied, as Freya checked to make sure the airlock under her ship was working.
“I can’t tell you much about the make-up of this platoon I’m trying to get into, but I don’t think not having vehicle docking locks will be that much of a problem.” Freya told her, as she checked her anti-missile guns lowered out of her ship without any problems before she pushed them back.
“Ok, but you're not thinking long-term. What about your next tour of duty? You might need a ship with them then.” Diaz told her.
“Why do you really want me to keep her?” Freya asked, as she stopped inspecting her ship and turned to look at her flight crew chief.
“It’s the fastest dropship I’ve ever worked on. It would be a shame if you sold her.” Diaz finally admitted.
“If I have the money, then I’ll keep her. But no promises.” Freya told her, even though she didn’t want to sell her first ship either. She knew that, while she had a lot of credits at the moment, things could change and the last thing she wanted was to be poor at the wrong time.
“Why don’t you build me your dream ship, and I’ll look at it?” Freya told her friend as they both walked up the ramp.
“Seriously?” Diaz said with a big smile. “What’s your credit limit?”
“Give me three options.” Freya said thinking about what Sergeant Torres had told her when she wanted to get bigger engines. “First option: no credit limit. The second, a medium-priced ship, and the last one the bare basics. Send them to me, and, if I have time, I’ll look it over while I’m out on mission.”
“You're the best.” Diaz said, giving Freya a hug before stepping back so she could get into the pod to despawn. Freya smiled at the excitement on Diaz’s face as the woman closed the pod door for her. Closing her eyes, Freya despawned into her cockpit.

The Year is XXXX, and a deep, heavy fog sets in all over not just the planet, but the whole of the universe, sending all within into a deep, deep sleep. When they awake, all has changed, and both for the better and the worse. Everything has changed, from the new, impossibly massive planet that all now occupy to the terrain to the very rules of reality themselves. But what has changed the most are the people. It seemed as though Humanity was alone in the cosmos, but no longer, as new, monstrous races have been born from the flesh of those whom the Fog singled out. With the survivors rewarded for each altered former human they kill, along with each heroic (and villainous) act that they engage in, those who have changed are forced to run, hide, and try to fight back. But in a distant place, a single altered person stirs from her sleep as the Fog fades. With no Humans for hundreds of miles and a [Quest] that all other Altered share guiding her newly inhuman mind, the newly born serpentine but humanoid monster will have to fight for survival and dominance in a world hellbent on her death, with that violent, pathological hate coming not just from the remaining Humans.
