《Digital Marine》CH:11 Meeting herself

Freya thought she should be worried about the red notification box but the feeling of being back on the Monarch was just too good. She smiled and opened the pod door. Covering her privates she equipped her shipboard uniform. She even equipped her helmet for a few seconds for a laugh before stowing it away again.
She climbed the stairs and walked out to the first floor and the slightly crowded marine concourse. The red box didn’t go away so she walked to the console trees and logged in. The only mission available was the counseling session with the Monarch. She accepted it and as she walked to the correct door which was on the other side of the concourse. She checked her status page. The page had not changed since she entered the mission. Her E points, mod points, and skill points were still the same. Frowning Freya wondered why she was ordered to go to a counseling session with the Monarch. Still frowning she unlocked the door and stepped into the light.
“Good evening Private.” The monarch said from behind her desk it had appeared behind the last time Freya had seen the AI. “Why don’t you have a seat and we can get started.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Freya said and then paused when she heard what the Monarch had called her. “She called me Private. Why did she make that mistake?” She wondered as she sat down.
“First let me congratulate on a very successful mission on many levels. First, Second Lieutenant Shen has been promoted for a record-breaking mission. The mission took ten days to complete and it is the fastest time anyone in the fleet had completed the mission so far. The now First Lieutenant had recommended you for a battlefield promotion before he himself was promoted. Normally his recommendation would be laughed at as it was only a simulated mission but the war college has taken an interest in your tactics on getting around sentry guns. They recommended to the board of advancement that you receive the battlefield promotion. Hence why you are here.” The Monarch said leaning back in her chair.
“You have been promoted to private effective immediately after this counseling session is over. You will receive 300 mod and skill points on top of the mission rewards you will receive for completing the mission. You will also receive 2552 Enlisted points as well as the rewards from the mission. I am sure you are aware this mission was a max reward mission so all rewards resulting from the mission including the battlefield promotion will be doubled.” The Monarch said smiling.
“Thank you, Ma’am,” Freya said shocked.
“The war college also express an interest in acquiring your digital copy to teach the tactic on dismantling sentry guns. They are willing to pay you thirty-five thousand credits and award you five hundred skill and mod points. They are also willing to give you enough Enlisted points to level up once. This will be of course after your battlefield promotion and your mission rewards. They are also willing to give you, your training for your advanced combat skill set for free. This is a twenty skill point cost they are willing to give you for accepting their offer. I strongly suggest you agree.”
“Now the unpleasant part. Private you have been looked at by all seven First Division named companies and the thirty-seven named platoons that make them up and have been passed on by every single one. It is my belief that this is because of your planet of birth. While normally this type of behavior is not tolerated in the marines they did have a very valid excuse. You are very young and you have not attended a military academy. Despite my beliefs, this is considered a valid excuse to pass on you. I find it hard to believe that anyone would pass up a Golden E metal holder but I cannot fault them on pass on you. Even with your battlefield promotion, I believe that you will have a problem getting into a named platoon in The Second Division.” The Monarch explained.

“With that in mind, I would like to give you an option to make yourself more desirable to the Companies of the Second Division. Following your desire to be a pilot you have enough skill and mod points, now, to become an advanced drone operator. This will allow you to use all drones up to and including piloting the respawn dropship. You will have enough credits to buy a license for a respawn dropship with the earnings you would receive if you accept the war college officer. This will ensure that you will receive an invitation to a platoon from The Second Division. There are very few respawn dropship pilots in the fleet because of the number of skill points that are required to pilot one and the cost of dropship itself. Many find it a waste until they reach the rank of Sergeant or higher. Even then many hesitate to get the skills needed because it would delay their advancement.” The Monarch told her.
“Let me show you what I mean.” The Monarch said and a notification appeared on her HUD asking her if she wanted to view her rewards and prospective career plan. She accepted.
Right off the bat, she discovered that she received twenty-five E-points which came to fifty after it was doubled from the mission. Her skill and mod points were twenty each after they were doubled. Then she was awarded three bonus. The first bonus was for disabling a path through the sentry guns by herself. The second bonus was the death of a general in the enemy army. She guessed it was the only man in the hallway in the hotel she had shot while trying to find a place to shoot the shield generator. The last bonus was for destroying the shield generator. The total E points she was awarded for the bonuses in the mission was forty-four after it was doubled. She was also awarded twelve skill and mod points after doubling it for the max rewards bonuses.
She was also awarded for her battlefield promotion and including the mission rewards it came to 5372 E points, 663 skill points, and mod points. She was also awarded 1412 credits after the mission and promotion rewards. If she accepted the war college offer then she would have 1163 mod and skill points and a staggering 12615 E points total. Plus her total credits would be 36412 credits.
She read further down on the Monarchs suggested path. The first thing she realized was that piloting a dropship really meant piloting. She would be classified as a marine pilot for small unmanned ships after she went through the piloting skills training. That included all forms of dropships and boarding ships. She would have to buy the license for the ships before she could fly them thought.
For advanced ships like the dropships and boarding ships, she would be downloaded into the ship and would have to fly the ship in a virtual cockpit. Once she landed then she would have to be spawned like everyone else. But the ship would be hers and she would be a real pilot even if she was released from the marines. As long as she had a license and credits to print the ship, she could fly it in the civilian world.
She kept reading, devouring the text happily. This was almost everything she had dreamed about when she was a child. If she accepted the war college’s offer then would be a pilot. Not a fighter pilot but close.
She kept reading and read all the skill she would need to get the ability to fly. She eyes nearly fell out of her head when she read that she would have to attend college and get a bachelor degree in math. The cost was a staggering eight-hundred skill points for all the classes she would need to take. Then after the very costly navigation and piloting skills, she would be left with just four skill points.

The plan had a huge mod requirement. “All those beautiful mod points, gone in less than a second.” Freya morned. The Monarch also mapped out what she would need to spend pointwise to get all the minimum requirements to get the skill. It would leave her with no mod points at all.
The scariest requirement was the required suicide mod that all drone operators had to have. There were ten different types of suicide mods. The mods went from a silent and quick death to a mod that would explode with a charge large enough to take out an entire city block. She like the instant and silent one where it sent a very powerful burst communication to the Monarch that hopefully would give the ship a last minute intelligence report. It was set to go off both by manually and if it detected interrogation drugs or a psionic invasion of her mind. What was really scary was just how cheap the suicide mod was.
“Can you explain what exactly goes into making a copy of me?” Freya asked a little reserved. She liked what she saw but it felt too good to be true.
“We would take your memories and download them into a teaching AI. It will have your likeness and your memories but it will not be self-aware like myself.” The Monarch explained. “Why do you ask? Is there a specific reason?”
“Religious reasons,” Freya muttered. She was not all that religious but she didn’t want to miss out on an afterlife, if there was one, because she didn’t think things through.
“Does not become a digital citizen go against your religious belief already? After all, you are not buried with every part of your body? In fact, your body is most likely used to make several other clones of other digital citizens.” The Monarch asked curiously.
“My people consider becoming a digital citizen as a second life. The marines liquified my body as a whole so that there were no mission body parts. I am still able to go to the afterlife when my life is finally over.” Freya explained feeling embarrassed. She hated talking about religion with others outside of her people.
“Thank you for explaining this. I will update your file on your religious beliefs. As to the question about your copy. I find no problems or conflicts in the past about this problem. In fact, you have a relative who was copied so that their past knowledge is preserved at Stevenson University on Mars.”
They talked about it for a little bit and Freya felt a little better. She read the last bit of information then agreed that was what she was going to do. The Monarch dismissed her and Freya turned and left. As soon as she stepped onto the concourse again she was assaulted with a bunch of notifications. The first was that she had been promoted. The others were about her rewards from the mission and the last was a notice that she had an offer from the war college.
She dismissed all the boxes except the one from the war college. She took a deep breath and accepted the offer. And just like that, she was rich. Not rich enough to buy her way in with the price of citizenship on a paradise planet but richer than anyone in her village. With thirty-six thousand credits, she could buy herself a big fishing boat and fish the north Pacific to her heart's content. As a boat owner, she could stay on land and hire a good captain and just sit back and rake in the money. But that’s not what she wanted to do. She wanted to fly. With a sigh, she headed towards the second-floor training facility.
She waited in line and when it was her time she quickly accepted all of the Monarchs recommendations and entered through the door. The first thing that happened was the wetware mods were added. She was shocked at the price of increasing the wetware mods after fifty. It cost her only one mod point up until that point but after fifty she needed two points and after one hundred she needed three points to advance her mod by one. Shaking her head she confirmed her selections and the world went black for a second.
When she came back she found herself in a warm office that had a large desk with a man that was standing in front of it. He was smiling as she entered the room. “Hello, I am a copy of Professor Cooper and I'll be your basic algebra teacher.” The man said to her.
With a deep sigh, Freya sat down at the desk on a really comfortable chair and looked at the professor. She found that learning in the sim was very different than how she went to school before. The school was used to growing up was a physical place where she had to go to during the winter. She knew that some of the richer kids went to school online but her mother was too poor to pay for online teachers. This, Freya found, was far superior to her previous education.
She never got bored or lost her focus like she did growing up as the teacher talked. It was so much easier than a physical school. The teacher was endlessly patient with her and didn’t get frustrated when she didn’t understand what he was trying to teach. Time flew by and Freya learned. Before she knew it she had passed the last test and was done with basic algebra. She had done it in one sitting. Better yet her butt wasn’t numb. The old teacher left from the door behind her and a new one entered. The next class started and Freya found she was eager to learn what was next.
Even though she was a math and military major she had to take a bunch of non-degree related classes. She learned about the Earth empire and its fall after the war with the second alien interstellar species that humans had come across. Earth had been a battleground for many years as both species fought over the planet with the humans finally winning. The butcher bill for the planet was steep with many of Earth's old colonies paying the steep price while the rich citizens of Earth hid out in server farms safe in their digital world.
The worst of it was how the empire treated its digital soldiers. They were given the best of the best weapons and skills but then they were shelved in data storage devices until they were needed. They were used like programs released to fight then turned off when they were not needed. Their memories modified or in a lot of cases erased when they became too unstable. Any soldier that show any signs of being unstable and who were not ‘fixed’ by altering or deleting memories were erased. Because the horrors of what the soldiers were exposed to, laws were made so that digital soldiers had rights that no one could take away.
That digital world that ended when a human terrorist bomb took out the servers killing billions of rich citizens of the old empire including all the political leaders of the empire. Freya knew only a little bit of Earth history during the war and was horrified at what the citizens of her home planet had done.
“No wonder no one like Earthlings,” Freya told her professor.
“Yes.” The professor replied with a slight smile.
She learned about ancient earth history and the rise of all the different types of empires. First, she learned about the national empires where people of one country fought another. Then she learned about the corporate empires where people fought other companies for money and political power. “An empire is an empire.” She thought to herself while she wrote a paper about the difference and similarities of the different types of empires.
Time ceased to exist as Freya pass class after class. The teacher would enter the class and would teach until the subject was complete and she passed her tests. A new teacher then would enter and the process would start all over again. She learned about biology and science as well as literature and art. She took the required military classes but she also took the required liberal arts classes in poetry and pottery. She liked the feeling of creating things from clay and mud. She had a little leeway in what classes she took outside her major. She had four classes that she could take outside her math and military major and she filled them with electronic engineering classes. She would never in her wildest dreams that she would be smart enough to take those classes but with infinite time to learn in the digital world and the computer's ability to remove her negative emotions and feelings it was easy to complete.
She took engineering classes because one of her math classes used the same equations as the engineer class did and she was curious to see the equations in action. It also seemed easy and fun. Four engineering classes were not enough to get a degree but it was enough that she was able to get a minor in it. To get a full degree she would have been required to take eight more classes and she didn’t have enough skill points for that.
“Maybe one day.” She promised herself.
Too soon she passed her last class and was awarded her bachelor degree in mathematics and military science. To her surprise, she felt sad that her education was over. She promised herself that she would keep taking classes whenever she had extra skill points. She was not naive enough to think that she would have a lot of extra skill points she could reserve for classes but still, she desired to come back and learn more.
Her next skill points were used to get the basic drone certification. She learned all about all the different types of drones and what they were used for. She learned about her cloud factory and learned how to use them manually which got her a lot more information and distance. She would need to buy new licenses for it but she thought it would benefit her in the long run. Right now she did not have enough credits to buy anything but the dropship and a few essentials.
The next skill she had to learn was navigation. While it was not a college class but it did go towards her piloting classes. It was fun and required a lot of math that she had learned about in college. She learned that nothing sat still in the universe. She learned how ships navigate in the void of space. When a pilot figured out where he/she wanted to go they needed to figure out where their target location was going to be in the future. On top of that, they needed to find a route with the shortest amount of time and distance to conserve fuel.
Next, she started in on her advanced drone qualifications and was able to sit in a cockpit for the first time even if it was a virtual cockpit. Her first class was an introductory class on what was what inside the cockpit. She had to figure out how much mass she had to move and how much fuel she needed in her engines to go where she was required to go. Speed, she learned, depended on how much power she needed to push the mass of her ship. The more mass she had on her ship the slower her ship would go and the longer she would have to slow her ship down to either land or dock at her desired location. The definition of speed was, Freya knew, the total distance traveled over the total time it took to travel that far. In a dropship, speed was very important.
Then the real fun began and she learned how to fly. There are three military crafts that could be piloted by advanced drone pilots. The first being an unarmed shuttle that took people and supplies in and out of the atmosphere. The unmanned shuttle was the first craft she learned how to fly. Flying was fun but the safety classes of if this happened you did this was not. The military had all these procedures and checklists in case of something happening that if Freya had to learn everything in the real world she knew it would have bored her to tears.
The next craft she learned was a space boarding ship. It was a heavily armored spawn ship, like the respawn dropship, that essentially crashed into a ship or station and started pumping out soldiers. It was a bit more complicated than that but not by much. Freya learned how to fly in combat against enemy fire to get to her target which was a lot of fun. The last craft she learned to fly was the lightly armored respawn dropship. It was the hardest ship to learn and she crashed so many times she would have given up if she was allowed too. She had to fly into all sorts of atmospheric environments while at the same time being fired at by all sorts of weapons. It was depressing how many times she was shot down. Now she knew why the military classified the dropship as a drone. The ship was a death trap to fly.
Over time she started to get better or at least survive longer. She learned tactics on how to survive dropping onto a planet or in some cases a large asteroid. She developed some tactics on her own that seemed to work and she started to survive more than she died. After she survived a hundred training simulated drops in a row did the computer allow her to pass.
The last skill was a bunch of skill combined to make one large skill called advanced combat infantry. Some of the stuff was really obvious to Freya and other stuff was not so obvious to her. There was a bunch of instructors one for each individual skill and sometimes a few instructors for one skill. She got a big surprise when she was working on her infiltrator skill. She had just learned how to use active camouflage to its maximum benefit and how to spot someone using it when her next instructor walked onto the field.
Looking up Freya saw herself walking towards her. “Hey original, I’m 0773341B8ZZ3. I’m your instructor on how to pass auto sentries.” Freya’s copy told her.
Shaking her head a little to get over her shock Freya frowned. “I already know how to do that. I’m the one who you are using to teach others.”
“That tactic only works on light auto sentries. The big guys in the war college expanded your strategy to work on medium and heavy armored sentries it's based off your tactics but with a few differences. Here let me show you what they came up with.” Freya’s copy said.
“For medium and heavy armor you’re going to need a better gun. I ran the numbers based on how you shoot and what you like in a gun and I came up with a gun that you can buy once you get done here. This gun is a Desus MOA Magnetic heavy rifle. It cost a pretty penny but even unmodded you can punch through very heavy armor. It’s designed like a rail gun in that a series of magnets propel a round down the chamber. The gun does not have the nasty side effect of a true railgun because the round is surrounded by a magnetic field. Since the round is surrounded by the field there is no recoil so you can use it zero-g environments. It also is invisible to most detection sensors and almost silent. It admits only a few decibels when fired. You can mod the gun for many types of round including explosive rounds. The best way I can describe it is that its a cross between an energy weapon and a ballistic weapon.” Freya’s copy told her.
“The downside to the weapon is that it uses energy like no other. You’re going to need a bigger battery to fire this thing. Also, you going to need an NG rod for ammo. The good news is that the rifle can fire over five hundred rounds with just one rod. The bad news is that the rod is about ninety credits. It’s more of a sniper rifle than an everyday weapon. I suggest you keep your current weapon and use the Desus when you need some heavy hitting power.” Freya’s copy suggested.
Her copy went on to tell her the difference between the different types of auto sentries and the most common ones. “The most annoying auto sentries are the ones that are shielded. The rifle you have in your hands right now would penetrate most shields but not all of them. Some of the higher end auto sentries also are rigged so that someone can monitor them. Modifying your tactic a bit makes for an ideal way to take out monitored auto sentries.” Her copy told her then showed Freya what she meant.
For the medium and light sentried her copy showed her a better way to distract the sentries. One of the ways was filling a sandbag with dirt so the sandbag would move faster in the air making it less likely to be hit by a stray bullet. She also showed Freya how to spot the locations of the sensor hub hidden inside the sentry itself. There were a few slightly different ways to distract the sentry but almost all of them required Freya to use her grandfathers tactic
Freya fired the gun that her copy had suggested and fell in love with it. The rifle vibrated when it fire to let her know it was working. Other than that there was no sound until the round hit the target. It ate right through the energy shield that was surrounding the medium sentry. The shielded heavy sentry did pose a problem but the people at the war college came up with a really cool idea of using a flair and multiple shots to take the heavy sentry out. Her copy waved to her as she left. Freya felt better about selling her copy to the war college now. While her copy was very similar to her it also had a lot of the tell-tale signs of being a low AI. It never got angry or frustrated. It was overly patient and it was overly knowledgeable about things it could look up online.
She completed the last two skill set and her last instructor told her she would be award the skill after she got active camouflage on her armor. Before she left researched a few different rifles and requested some time to shoot them. The training facility charged her a single credit for the rental of the guns and gun range. She paid the price and spent several hours shoot all the different weapons but in the end she like the one her copy suggested.
While she was there she reached different prices for the dropships. The cheapest was the store on the sixth floor but knew she could get a better deal if she played them off each other. The armor, on the other hand, was way out of her current budget. The next upgrade for her armor was over four hundred credits unmodified. Each mod added nearly fifty credits. She decided that if she could get a really good price for her dropship then she would think about getting new armor but if not then she would just get the active camouflage mod on her current armor. Now she had a plan she opened the door and walked into the light.
She started on the first floor. She found the shop that sold vehicles and asked for the price for the factory standard respawn dropship. The android gave her a quote and she nodded. Waving goodbye she walked up to the stairs and found the second story shop that sold vehicles. Her hunch turned out to be true as the android gave her a slightly cheaper price than what she found on the internet while she was in the training facility. She asked the same question on the third-floor shop and got a better deal. Smiling at the android she left and went to the fourth-floor shop.
She asked the android the same question but he stopped her. “Look I know what you’re doing and I can give you a better deal than any other shop in the concourse. I am willing to sell you a dropship with six respawn pods and an active camouflage cloud factory that will surround hide the ship and the surrounding area for twenty feet for thirty-four thousand eight hundred. I am willing to give you all that for a two-year contract on your Batk fluid and your printing solutions for the armor and weapons.”
Freya struggled to keep her face neutral as she didn’t realize that she had to buy the stuff for people to respawn on her ship. It was never mentioned in her training. She looked out the door and thought about leaving and trying her luck in another store.
“Look, Private, you don’t have to pay for the respawn materials. The people who respawn do. It’s why respawning cost credits even in the sims. The price is set in the sims so that when you go on a real-world mission the cost of the real respawn is not outrageous. The more people who respawn on your ship while in sim missions means the fewer credits people have to pay when they respawn in real-world missions.” The android explained to her.
“Here is the price chart for respawns costs in the sims vs spawns respawn costs in the real world mission. You get to pick your price based on how many people you think will respawn on your ship. The price is fixed though so once you pick the price range you cannot change it until the contract is up. It won’t affect you all that much but it will affect those who respawn on your ship. My suggestion is while not the lowest it will be close. From the way you are going through the missions you should be fine when you are sent on a mission to the real world.” The android told her.
“What happens if I don’t go on a real-world mission. Do the credits get refunded back to those who paid them?” Freya asked knowing the truth already.
“In a word no. But before you get all upset please understand that there are very few pilots of respawn ships in the fleet and there will always be. On this ship alone there are only seven dropship pilots including yourself. Five have already been accepted verbally for companies in the first division. The last one besides yourself had given a tentative agreement on a position in the fourth company in the Second Division. Given that most of First Division are mostly filled up already I predict that you will be easily picked up by a named platoon in First Company Second Division.”
“Now with that said First lieutenant Shen who is now in-charge of First Division has an agreement with Second Lieutenant Coleman to trade companies when they are needed. Ships like the Monarch usually have eight to ten stops along its route sometimes more. Of those stops, at least six of them will be combat related. Of the six combat-related missions, three to four will actually be combat mission instead of rattle the saber missions. That means a dropship pilot and their company can expect three to four real-world missions on this cruise. My employer will make some money off of you no matter what but it's not as one-sided as you may think. So do we have a deal?” The android asked.
“One year contract with the first contract negotiations rights.” Freya finally said after thinking it over.
“I am sorry but I cannot go below two-year contract but I can adjust the price so that you can respawn for free on your ship.” The android said with a realistic smile.
“Thank you for your time,” Freya said smiling at the android. “I think I will head to your competitor and see what he has to offer.”
“Wait I have been authorized to offer you an eighteen-month contract with a lower rate if you will be willing to let us see all contracts before you sign a new supply contract.” The android renegotiated.
“Same deal but instead of seeing all my contracts you get the first and last bid on the next contract. I cannot let you have that much power over my new contracts.” Freya told him.
The android became very still for a couple of seconds before moving again. “My employer agrees and hopes that you will remember us in the future as you move forward in your career.” He told her pushing a tablet towards Freya to read.
As she read the contract Freya silently thanked her grandfather once again for teaching her how to fight for a good deal and the secret to the four square deals. Getting a good deal on the meat and furs was sometimes life or death in the winter. She read the last part of the contract and signed her name. The last part added another thousand credits that went to the marines to pay to print as many copies as she needed of her new dropship. It was a standard fee that everyone had to pay to print their equipment but the fee was really big though. While she could negotiate with the store she could not negotiate with the marines. Another signature appeared on the contract on the table and the android sent her a copy of the contract on her messenger account.
“Congratulations Private, you are now the proud owner of a brand new Goozden 127 light armored Respawn DropShip license with active camouflage factory mod with six respawn pods. My employer would like to applaud your negotiated skills. He is eager to revisit the contract in eighteen months.”
“You may tell him that I too look forward to seeing how well he does in the future,” Freya told him smiling.
She owned her own ship now. Well, she owned the license to print the ship. The cost to print the ship was pretty low though as long as she was in the military compared to what she would pay in the civilian world. Once she was out it would cost a pretty penny to print a new ship. Plus she would have to modify the ship before the Marines would let her print the ship legally.
“No new armor though.” She thought to herself as she left the shop. “I have enough credits to buy the rifle my copy suggested in the training facility but not enough to buy new armor suit without losing all the mods I currently have.”
With a twisted smile, she went to the weapons shop. Five hundred or so credits later she had her new gun with six heat sinks, three NG rods for ammo, a new scope and three new Mega Colax purified battery with a fast charger to go on her armor’s belt.
The trip to the armor shop was really quick and she was able to buy her active camouflage mod but she had to upgrade her batteries in her armor. She ended up buying two more Mega Colax purified batteries just to be able to run her active camouflage constantly for two days. That, she knew, could become a serious problem. She also purchased a mod for her helmet so that she could use it when she flew her ship.
Once she paid for the mods she received a blue box notification telling her that she now had the skill Advanced combat infantry. With only two credits to her name, she decided to spend one on getting a real meal before she headed out on another mission. She was tired of eating nothing but nutrition drinks. As she walked down the stairs she checked her status page.

I am not a native English speaker and this tale is also a means to improve my usage of the English language. All feedback (be it grammar, spelling, plotholes or wording etc.) is greatly appreciated. The draft for the first arc has been completed, the fair copy is in the works and will gradually be published here.
