Klaus Heydrich (17 June 1933 – 9 October 1990) was a German-born blood-based empath and mass murderer, posthumously known as The Black Death in reference to the medieval plague, as well as the Butcher of Africa. As the most powerful and variable empath in history Heydrich was the cause of the African Devastation which killed an estimated 400-500 million people after his defeat at the hands of Captain Dawn of the Legion of Heroes.

Early Life

Birth and childhood

Heydrich was born in Berlin, Germany on 17 June 1933 to German intelligence officer Reinhard Heydrich – a high-ranking Nazi official and one of the main architects of the Holocaust and founder of the Sicherheitsdienst – and schoolteacher Lina von Osten. His given name, meaning ‘Victory’, was a tribute to the aspirations of the Third Reich.

As a member of the Nazi elite, Reinhard Heydrich was a German nationalist who instilled patriotic ideals and the doctrines of Nazism in his son including the philosophies of natural selection, eugenics, and the superiority of the Aryan race. From a young age Klaus was intelligent, cold and unusually advanced, excelling at school – especially in science – and embracing Nazi teachings. Physically disciplined and a talented athlete, he revelled in exercising power or inflicting punishments on younger children or servants, and idolized his father.

Assassination of father, “death”, and flight from Germany

On 27 May 1942, Reinhard Heydrich was attacked by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile and wounded, subsequently slipping into a coma before dying on 4 June 1942. The effects of this on the 9-year-old Heydrich were profound, and caused him to exhibit bouts of irrational anger and depression. In the year following his father’s death, threats in connection with those killed by Reinhard Heydrich were made against Heydrich’s family, and subsequently a notice was posted on 24 October 1943 stating that Klaus Heydrich had died from a traffic accident – a deception now believed to have been instigated by Heydrich’s mother to protect her son.

Little is known about Heydrich’s subsequent movements and the remainder of his childhood. Conflicting reports have the Heydrich family fleeing Germany prior to the arrival of the Allied Forces, with others claiming that they refused to leave and were subsequently incarcerated before being released. Several historians have postulated that Heydrich’s 1943 death notice was not fake and that his identity was adopted by an unknown other, possibly even the secret son of Adolf Hitler (see: Black Legacy Conspiracy Theory) though this has never been proven. The commonly accepted theory is that at some point following the fall of the Third Reich, Heydrich and his family left Germany – according to some accounts accompanied by a small guard of SS troopers – and travelled to Argentina, where Heydrich spent the remainder of his childhood and adolescence.

Post-war

Heydrich spent the majority of his adult life in hiding, and the timeline of his movements remains disputed. It is generally accepted that by early 1960 he had abandoned his remaining family in Argentina and joined an underground group of Nazi loyalists in occupied Berlin. Heydrich engaged in small-scale resistance and sabotage, setting fire to foreign-owned businesses and murdering unsuspecting Allied soldiers. Several acquaintances from this period have placed him in Berlin when the Aurora Nirvanas hit the Earth's biosphere and in the subsequent Six Day Slumber that followed.

Post-humanism records of Heydrich, at this point an unknown and uncontroversial figure, have proved elusive. A barman in Munich made unsubstantiated claims that he served someone fitting Heydrich's description around August 1963, who lamented that “God had not seen fit” to grant him a power, suggesting that Heydrich may have initially struggled to uncover his empathic abilities. The only confirmed sighting occurred on 9 November 1969, when twins Franz and Ola Schmidt saw a man they would later recognize as Heydrich in the street during Captain Dawn's tearing down of the Berlin Wall. According to separately psychically verified accounts the twins, children at the time, stood next to Heydrich in a tightly packed crowd where he “…gazed up at Dawn with an expression which was at once awestruck and terrified." Ola Schmidt then held his hand, stating that she “…cannot remember the reason why…”, and that “…he [Heydrich] didn't seem to notice anyway." This would be the last time Heydrich was seen in Europe and marked the end of any correspondence he had with his family or former compatriots. A private memorial service was held for him in Buenos Aires, Argentina by his mother and sisters on 6 January 1975.

Africa

Pre-Legion Identification

Several events are known to have occurred following Heydrich’s disappearance, although the order in which they occurred is unclear:

Heydrich discovered the nature of his abilities as a blood‑based empath and began accumulating and integrating powers. Heydrich absorbed the ability to regenerate cellular damage, decelerating his aging. Heydrich migrated to Central Africa through unknown means (possibly flight).

The motivation for Heydrich’s migration to Africa has caused some debate. It is unclear whether his visit was intended to be temporary, or whether he came with an intention to stay to avoid detection or to exploit the unrest gripping the continent at that time. Regardless, once there, Heydrich began acquiring a vast array of powers from the African people.

Methods of Acquisition

Heydrich’s exact method for acquiring the genetic material necessary for empathic acquisition is unknown; however, the extensive length of time in which he operated incognito implies a slow and methodical process, whereby a new power was acquired and then its utility mastered before the next ability was sought. Heydrich is believed to have progressed systematically between towns, cataloguing the powers of every adult and abducting any individual with an as-yet-unobtained ability. No trace of any of these abductees is ever believed to have been found, and they were often assumed to have run away by friends and relatives. Following these acquisitions, Heydrich, as a blood-based empath, would have required time to process, adjust to and integrate his new-found powers, leading to long periods of self-imposed isolation. To the best of current knowledge this undetected cycle of stalk, kill, absorb and process continued for up to two decades, and could have gone on indefinitely had Heydrich not become emboldened.

Legion Identification

On 13 September 1990, Heydrich arrived at Businga Uganda, and entered the residence of local warlord Joseph Kony, whom he murdered along with approximately sixty others through the use of various abilities. Having assumed command of the town, Heydrich spent several days personally assessing every member of the population and executing approximately 320 people for being old, infirm, handicapped, homosexual or otherwise possessing a quality he deemed undesirable. On 16 September 1990, Heydrich entered Bokoli and launched a similar ‘cleanse’ before repeating the process on 18 September in Popolo and 19 September throughout Likimi province. On 20 September he returned to Businga and ordered the remaining townsfolk to spread to nearby areas and instigate similar ‘cleanses’ of their own. When they refused, he massacred the majority of the citizenry and forced the remainder to accompany him to Bokoli, where he issued the same ultimatum, which was there accepted. On 21 September Heydrich and several hundred followers subsequently invaded the neighbouring provinces of Binga and Lisala and killed over 1000 ‘undesirables’ before extending outwards in their campaign.

On 1 October 1990, a report alleging Heydrich’s actions was submitted anonymously to the Legion of Heroes, which due to a backlog in aid requests was not reviewed until two days later. On 4 October, Legion members Justin Cleaver (Seventh Son), Samantha Del Lago (Nerid) and Goodluck Jonathan (Shadowsteps) were deployed to confirm the report’s veracity and to locate and neutralise Heydrich. At approximately 9am on 7 October the three tracked Heydrich to the southern border of Chad, where they engaged in combat and were quickly overwhelmed. The deaths of Cleaver and Del Lago, and Jonathan’s call for reinforcements, set in motion events that would ultimately lead to the African Devastation.

Death

For a summary of Heydrich’s fight against the Legion of Heroes and a timeline of the deaths of Legion members, see “Legion of Heroes”

Klaus Heydrich committed suicide at 8:48pm on 9 October 1990 (Eastern Standard Time) following a protracted three-day battle with the Legion of Heroes and ultimate defeat at the hands of Captain Dawn. Heydrich utilised a combination of atomic destabilisation, regeneration and cellular thermo-sinkage to infuse his body with explosive force equivalent to 5000 nuclear bombs, before ‘detonating’ upon reaching critical instability. The resulting explosion extended from Libya to Zimbabwe and sent shockwaves around the world.

Aftermath and Legacy

Klaus Heydrich is the most prolific mass-murderer in history, having caused an estimated 400,000,000-500,000,000 deaths, approximately one eighth of Earth’s population at the time.

In the aftermath of Heydrich’s geno-suicide, the Empath Control Convention was adopted by an emergency meeting of the United Nations General Assembly requiring all nations to regulate empath behaviour. This move did not go far enough for some, who demanded international Empath Extermination Orders. The week of 9 October was designated as a 7‑day remembrance period dedicated to Heydrich’s victims (see: The Vigil), which is observed every year by folding paper stars and wearing black as well as with various memorial services. In the years following the African Devastation Heydrich’s name and his moniker The Black Death have become synonymous with the concepts of evil, sociopathy, empathic mimicry and mutually assured destruction.
