《Rise of the Great Emperor 》Chapter 42: Want to Involve Me? (2)

"Ah?" Lin Xiao's eyebrows furrowed, but he stopped his movement. Turning his head around, he looked in the direction of the stage as he saw Su Han standing proudly over there. Apparently, after advancing to body training rank 7, he had more confidence in himself.
Su Han pointed at him. "Come on, do you not dare to step forward and fight?"
Lin Xiao pursed his lips. He had no intention to join the sect at all, so he never had any plan to participate in this farce. His brain began to think hard to think for a method to gloss this over without offending the three sects as he slowly turned his body.
"Who's that?" Luo Lan asked.
"The idiot who laughed yesterday."
"Ah, that annoying idiot?"
Bai Xin looked at Lin Xiao with arched eyebrows. She had almost forgotten about his existence if not for Su Han singled him out in the crowd. Now that she thought about it, the villagers looked calm even though the young man created trouble yesterday.
Was he… a troublemaker?
"I'm not in good condition to fight, so I don't want to shame myself," Lin Xiao reasoned out. "Unlike you who managed to reach body training rank 7 within a short period of time, I'm still body training rank 5 and naturally can't stand out as much as you."
"Are you afraid?" Su Han provoked.
"Yes, I'm afraid."
Just as the villagers were dumbfounded with Lin Xiao's frank answer, Su Han's lips were slowly forming a smile. Normally, people would not want to admit that they were afraid because it was humiliating. Now that Lin Xiao openly spoke out that he was afraid, didn't it mean that he, Su Han, was much better than Lin Xiao?

The thought had just started to form when Lin Xiao continued his words.
"I'm afraid that you're going to be humiliated under my hand even though I'm two ranks below you? That would be an utter embarrassment, wouldn't it?" Lin Xiao continued in nonchalant tone.
The smile that was about to form stopped abruptly.
Su Han looked in Lin Xiao's direction with threatening gaze. If only look could kill, Lin Xiao would have died many times under Su Han's gaze right now. Unfortunately, all that happened was only Su Han glaring in anger.
"LIN XIAO! IF I DON'T BEAT YOU UP, MY NAME IS NOT SU HAN!"
"How annoying," Lin Xiao muttered under his breath. He was planning on going back without attracting anyone's attention today. Yet, Su Han was the one who called him out in this situation.
Lin Yun also frowned. "Brother."
"Don't worry, I'll be fine."
"I know you're going to be fine, but make sure to leave him face."
Su Han: "…"
Hearing the sibling's conversation, he was already on the verge of explosion. He was the one who had higher and better ranking compared to Lin Xiao. Why did it turn out that Lin Xiao was the one who had to give him face?
"Your name is Lin Xiao, right?" Bai Xin interjected. She waved her hand and pointed to the front. "Come here and try to fight."
Lin Xiao arched his eyebrows. "Do you want to bully me, Senior? You're three ranks higher than me."
If Bai Xin was only one rank higher than him, Lin Xiao wouldn't be so worried. However, Bai Xin was three ranks higher than him, at the same rank as Su Hei. Not to mention, the various skills that Bai Xin had learned in her sects would make it impossible for Lin Xiao to defeat her.

Bai Xin rolled her eyes. "Fight Su Han, not me."
"Oh. That's easy."
Easy?
Su Han was still sending death's glare towards Lin Xiao as the latter walked in leisure pace towards the stage. He was thinking of various method to suppress Lin Xiao because he felt utterly humiliated.
Tep!
Standing on the stage, Lin Xiao stretched his hand. He looked at Su Han with a smile. "I'm ready whenever you're ready!"
"You're courting death!"
Stomping on the ground, Su Han charged towards Lin Xiao. His speed had tremendous increase now that he had reached body training rank 7. However, Lin Xiao was still looking at him with calm gaze.
Swish!
Evading to the side, Lin Xiao cleanly avoided Su Han's fist. He twisted his body and kicked forward lightly.
Tak!
Su Han jumped to the back. He arched his eyebrows. "Is that all you can do? Your kick didn't hurt in the slightest bit!"
"We're only starting, Su Han." Lin Xiao said in unhurried tone. For the past two months, he had been hunting almost every single day in the forest and got chased by several beasts. Some of them were guided to the entrance of the village while the rest were shaken off. Only a few weaker ones did Lin Xiao hunted.
But that experience of doing everything by himself had honed his skill. Facing Su Han's speed, that looked much faster than normal people, could no longer faze Lin Xiao because it was slower compared to rank 1 beast that he had to run away from.
"You'll die! Mountain Punch!"
Swish!
Lin Xiao evaded Su Han's fist once more as Su Han punched forward. He positioned his legs and spoke each word slowly. "That's not how you use Mountain Punch."
"Huh?"
In split second, Lin Xiao had readied his stance and punched forward. His fist directly hit Su Han's right arm that was about to be pulled back.
Crack! Bam!
Sound of bone cracking could be heard followed by Su Han's crash to the ground. Staring at the sky before him, Su Han held bewildered expression on his face.
It turned silent.

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
