When the white light cleared up, I had arrived at the fountain plaza of the 『First Town』 where stone and wooden Eastern European-like buildings are lined up.
Rena: 「So many…」
The place was crowded with people, probably some players mixed in as they dressed in the same initial gear as me. People who are not good with this are likely to get sick. Isn’t the people here alone already a total of three digits?
Rena: 「Well, anyhowーーー」
―――From here on, let’s switch as 『Rena』 instead of 『Ichijou Reina』.
Now then, if I look around, I could see that there’s a lot of places that is crowded with people. At the center of the 『First Town』 lies an NPC called 『Tutorial Uncle』 and 『Our Aniki』, who dressed seemingly as a soldier from a so-called country.
In this game, NPCs that had appeared in the beta version will not change their speech and conduct towards real people, which also includes the first NPC that the players will come into contact with as he’s very popular among players due to his human scent and friendly character.
When a player appeared and tried to have a real consultation about how to avoid his divorce in the beta version, the NPC answered everything seriously, and thus he became the man of the hour(?). Since such NPC tells the player how to fight monsters, how to use skills and magic, and various other things for the first quest, as his name suggests, it can be said that it is necessary for the players to talk to this NPC first.
Rena: 「This is really a lot…」
The moment after I got tired of looking around, I tried to get close to the Tutorial Uncle but there are too many people blocking… well, it’s also convenient from here on though.
Rena: 「Umm,」
Uncle: 「Hmm? Aah, you are also a migrant, right?」
Rena: 「Well, yes.」
I could finally talk to him… there really are too many players… Well, I’m already used to moving in this crowd, so it’s no problem. By the way, for the NPCs, migrant is what they called the player with.
Uncle: 「Do you want to ask something too?」
Rena: 「Yes, I just came here and there’s a lot of things that I don’t understand」
Uncle: 「If it’s like that, then this questーーー」
Rena: 「---so that’s why, I will need you to die.」
Thus, I used the initial equipment dagger that I had and decapitated the Tutorial Uncle.
???: 「Huh?」
Who uttered that word? Right now, in the fountain plaza, as if the time had stopped, the players and the NPCs have opened their mouths regardless of whether they are standing still or not. It was probably the people behind me who cannot see anything.

Rena: 「…alright」
The dagger cast a faint red-black effect when I decapitated the uncle, which is the proof that the 『Surprise Attack』 skill was activated. Though, it would seem that as the name suggests, it was a surprise attack rather than an assassination and it would activate even if you attack suddenly from the front, this is good.
Or rather, blood has spurted out like a fountain from the decapitated body, probably because I set the depiction setting to real-life basis. Is there any player who saw it the same like me?
Oh? For some reason, I suddenly got a lot of announcements? Well, that’s obvious as I’m still a Level 1 here and has just killed a country’s soldier. For the rest… I’ll check it later. Instead, I cannot afford to miss this opportunity where there’s a vast majority of players here.
Rena: 「---Fuh!」
While still looking back on what just occurred, I decapitated the two players who just had a friendly chat with the Tutorial Uncle before in one go. Because of real-life basis setting, they didn’t turn out as particles of light and disappear, but instead they fell down while they were spurting out blood and burned. As I was thinking like that in the corner of my head, I quickly rushed into the crowd, decapitated everyone, pierced their heart, and stabbed their throat like a random assailant.
Player A: 「W-what?!」
Player B: 「Aniki is..!!」
Player C: 「GYAAAAAAAA!!!」
Player D: 「What’s wrong? What is happening?!!」
Player E: 「I don’t even know!」
NPC: 「S-SOMEONE! PLEASE HELP!!」
When they finally came back to their senses, it was already too late. I kicked the target’s leg and stabbed him from the front…and pierced his throat before cutting him in mid-air. I, then grabbed the corpses that still remain and throw it as a cover while I hunt for another players’ neck. As the PK continues, it spread the chaos even further.
Player F: 「Ah! It’s that girl!」
Player G: 「That son of a bitch!」
Player H: 「KILL HER!!」
Player I: 「Seize her!」
Some of the confused players have started to respond a bit, are they from the beta version? Well, I won’t change on killing everyone anyway as I have already PK-ed a total of two digits.
Player G: 「Everyone calm down! Make some space!」
Player I: 「Go surround her!」
Those who were calm tried to calm everyone down and took control of the surroundings just like water on a heated stone. If so, I will just make a U-turn and charge in.
Player G: 「!! This piece of shーーー!」
Before he even realized it, I was able to remove his head, but at the cost of getting surrounded by two parties.
Player H: 「Bastard! How dare you do that to Aniki!」

Player J: 「Aren’t you going a little bit too far?」
Player I: 「You’re now surrounded by at least 11 people. Just die obediently」
There are three swordsmen for the vanguard with one spear-user and axe-user on each side, and four people who looks like magicians and two archers in the back… If I don’t move here, they will concentrate fire on me, but if I charge in, the vanguard will beat me up severely, and to make it worse, if I take a long time here, other players who have just returned to their senses will join in the battle. Then, the only option I could do now is….
Rena: 「There’s no choice but to escape, I see.」
Player I: 「Ah! Wait, you bastard!」
I’m not a bastard, but I guess it’s a good thing for them to say it like that due to the fact that I’m still running through the fountain plaza and killed some NPCs who were running a stall and players who were still in chaos.
Player J: 「tsk!! That girl is still!」
Uh oh, when I looked back for a little bit, the miss rear guard has a terrible expression, heaven forbid.
Player K: 「Shi-!!」
The archer fired an arrow and I grabbed a child NPC who was nearby as a shield.
Player K: 「Are you a human?!」
「Are you a human?!」 is probably a no for me. Well, I also think that I’m a bad person, though. But in any case, I threw the kid behind me.
Player H: 「Dangerous-!」
Player I: 「tsk! If we don’t heal that child quickly, he will die!」
One of the swordsmen caught the child brilliantlyーーーbut as his vision got blocked momentarily by catching the child, I stabbed him together with the child in his heart and the child’s arm with my dagger. I then decapitate the priest girl who seemed to be running to help the child. The child who is still stuck on me is a hindrance, hence let’s leave him on the spot.
Player L: 「Ryne! Cherry!」
It’s Ryne-san and Cherry-san, I see. Though, I’m not interested at all… and I proceed to go behind the spear-user who shouted and looked away from me. I put a kick on the back of his knees then tightened his neck and twisted it. I made sure that all of his HP is gone along with a wet 『Pagya』 sound.
Maybe because I set it real-life basis, his eyes gone white and he spewed bubbles from his mouth. Well, I will just leave him be as it is, thus I kicked his stomach, stole his spear and threw it to the rear guard.
As I tried to charge into the second swordsman who rushed to repel the spear, I saw a big axe flying before my eyes. I evaded it with somersault and threw the dagger that I had in hand to the axe-user which resulting in a wonderful headshot.
It felt truly good.
Rena: 「What remains are two vanguard swordsmen, three magicians and two archers, I see…」
The guard NPCs and the players are gradually recovered from the confusion. There isn’t much time anymore……
Rena: 「Let’s end it here…」
Player I: 「tsk!」
Player J: 「Rear guards, assemble! We don’t have enough hands here!」
I charged into the rear guard again and ignored the two vanguards. When the two flustered swordsmen rushed back to the rear guard so that they could easily protect themーーーI made a U-turn again as I don’t need to sincerely go along with them until the end.
Player I & J: 「「Ah!」」
I escaped and rushed out of the town while stabbing and decapitating some mob NPCs as per usual. Because I’m not familiar with the back alley and can not disappear into the crowd there, I ran through the main street as it is and dragged in the NPCs and players who doesn’t know anything yet into chaos.
I pulled down the fully-loaded stalls and threw away the weapons that I took while passing by. The unlucky players got headshotted and killed instantly.
They were likely to catch up on me frequently, but I stopped and jumped backward and did a shoulder throw from their back each time. On that occasion, I borrowed their weapons and threw it behind and stabbed the other players’ throat and killed them. I also stole some goods from the stalls and continued to escape.
If I have some time, I will focus on selling these essential items such as potions, which will increased in number of demands as well as the people who will use them in the future. While thinking about it, I’m going to be out of the town shortly.
NPC: 「You there! Stop!」
The gatekeeper ordered me to stop when the gate was just about to be seen, but I ignored it and jumped overhead. Escaping from the 『First town』 is a success.
Ooohh?! Somehow, there’s a lot coming up…
Will they decide to withdraw pursuing me as the area will change from the first town into a battle zone? Well, they’re still chasing me anyway, so let’s run into the south forest which is right in front of me for now.
Player M: 「Wait!」
Player N: 「Hey, is this an event?」
Player O: 「Isn’t it too fast for an event? This is only the second day of service, right?」
Player P: 「Well for now, it should be good if we catch that girl first, I guess?」
It seems that some players who doesn’t know the circumstances in detail are also participating in this pursuit, though I will never be caught.
Rena: 「Now then…」
I have reached the South Forest and went to a certain depth. I, then hid in the shade of the trees,ーー
―――cut my throat and committed suicide.

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Cover art by Rhodex Designs (FB). Hope you like long chapters and adjectives. Note: English is not my first language. Another story set in the same universe, written by a good friend
