《V.I.R.A.L 》Chapter 219: The Sunnyside Murders

A heavy downpour of rain flooded the small worn-down neighbourhood just outside Rhinefield. The time was just past midnight as a dozen police cars surrounded a small one-bedroom apartment. This wasn't uncommon for the people living there, with crime being much higher in Victoria's more quiet and mundane parts. This was for one simple reason; no streamer could get big in these areas. However, unlike the other cases, this one was different. Two figures approached the apartment being let in by the police. Inside the rotten house was bin bags everywhere, half-eaten food and blood. Taking off his hood Kurt glanced around, giving it a little thought. "How many were killed?"
"A family. The youngest daughter killed her brother and sister alongside her mother. The father went missing three days ago."
"While horrible as it is. I hardly see why we CEOs need to be called in for such a current event." Vitae scoffed at adjusting her shoes. "Are the police not capable of handling a single case?"
"The Commissioner thought it would be of great interest you see for yourself."
Kurt folded his arms, nodding. "Very well, what happened to the girl?"
"Well, ever since we arrived, she won't stop muttering to herself."
"Hold on, officer. It was made clear to us that the girl was killed by your own men when you entered."
The officer looked troubled, nodding, pausing a second to respond. "We did."
The two CEOs continued through the destroyed apartment, seeing more evidence of what happened. Mouldy carpet and the family's bodies rotting away in the corner. Kurt stared at them, tutting. "What a waste."
"Getting sentimental, now are we? An angel of death shouldn't get worked up over something like that."
"Angel of death or not, seeing people die for no good reason angers me. That's all, surely you can understand that Vitae."
"Of course, we share the same hive mind. All your thoughts are mine as well-meaning you cannot hide anything from us. Like the fact you've been looking for your daughter Zinnia Trost all too much."
Kurt glanced at Vitae, choosing not to say a word as he walked into the kitchen, seeing the girl who caused all of this leaning against the wall bleeding with multiple gunshots. The blood-stained knife lay by her. She was mumbling with a plastered smile across her face. "We're starting to call this the Sunnyside murders. This is the tenth case now, all from completely different parts of the city to each victim with different backgrounds, with no connection. They would kill their families and end up dead one way or another with that look of satisfaction a grin like no other."

"Commissioner. Long-time no see." Vitae acknowledged shaking the young woman's hand. "You don't call out us like this for no trivial reason."
"Please, I've told you on serval occasions to call me Charmeine."
"You're not even trying to keep your identity a secret, are you now?"
Charmeine smirked, shrugging her shoulders. "Perhaps not. Nonetheless, the way of my people has been lost to time. No one remembers what Fairy-Tale is anymore. I may be the last of my race here on earth, but I'm just a normal girl to everyone else. Regardless we both have the same goal here."
"That we do," Kurt muttered. "Tell us the story then."
Charmeine began twirling her short ginger hair around, nodding. "We got a call from the next-door neighbour claiming he heard stranger whispers coming from this apartment and a foul smell. We sent one of our own to investigate. After not hearing back from his for hours, we sent in backup and found this very scene. The family have been dead for at least two weeks. The daughter hasn't left the house since; in fact, I don't think she's left that spot we found her in since. She hasn't drunk or eaten anything in two weeks, but she was of perfect health."
"That's not possible."
"You're telling me." She states, lighting a cigarette staring blankly into the next room. "We found our officer in the next room with the same uncanny grin whispering the same three words our murderer also was whispering."
"Anything to suggest why the daughter would do such a thing?"
"None. She was only seven, so having the ability to overpower her whole family without anyone knowing sounds nearly impossible. Before this, she seemed somewhat normal. She had a small group of friends who would hang out on weekends playing house. She was on her school's netball team, and she was even running for school council. She had no moral or agender in our books to commit mass murder of her own family."
"Yet here we are. Your officer, what happened to him?"
"He's alive if we can even count that being true. No matter what we do, he will not respond to any of our questions or demands. He's just a husk of what was mumbling the same tired expression over and over."
"What words?"
Charmeine took a longwinded sigh looking to the bathroom. "Go see for yourself."

Kurt gave her a strange look walking into the bathroom. He was met by another officer and a medic attending to the victim. The police officer, who looked to be in his mid-fifties, lay on the floor leaning against the bath, staring down, mumbling. Not getting a good enough chance to hear, Kurt leaned in, startled at what he heard. "The Garden Grows, the Garden Grows, the Garden Grows, The Garden Grows."
Kurt stepped away immediately, looking much wearier. "So that's how it is. The girl too?"
"The same all be it with a different word thrown into the mix soon enough. Salvation."
Kurt fumbled his arms together, nodding. "It seems the Garden has been growing under our noses once more. If they are influencing the public now, we might not have much time…"
"That wasn't why I called you here. Something like this, I could send a report to you." Charmeine whispered, biting her lip. "It's better just to show you." Holding her hand out, the small light from her hand fades as all the police officers stop in their tracks, turning to the three.
Kurt and Vitae look around, lost before the police officers all begin to chant in perfect sync. "Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance, Salvation." The kept repeating the same stages over and over.
Returning the light to her hand, the officers went back to their jobs as the two CEOs were left dumbfounded. "Oh my…"
"It appears our worse fears have come true," Vitae stated. Pulling Kurt aside, she whispered. "I believe this proves we are almost out of time. Is our ace in the hole ready yet?" Kurt stared on, not responding. "Kurt. Phantom!"
"Yes… He's almost ready."
"If we are to survive this coming war, we'll need our own stage of grief to even the odds."

A mixture of laughter ignited from the table as Zephyr squad sat around eating and drinking their problems away. Lily stabbed at her food, giggling away, nudging up to Rapunzel. Gogh sat idly sipping on his drink through a straw sketching. "What are you drawing there, Kenny?"
Gogh groaned, dropping the book. "Nothing since you won't leave me alone."
"Why are you always like this?"
Gogh shrugged his shoulders, frowning. "I don't care. I think I'll give up drawing."
"Didn't you give up on playing the guitar last week?"
"And cooking the week before."
"I suppose."
Lily began bouncing a ball whistling. "You don't care much about anything, do you?"
"I don't care."
Alton slowly walked over, sitting next to Gogh, holding a cup of noodles. "Cascade! Where have you been?"
"I've been busy," Alton stated, not touching his food staring at the table. "What were you talking about?"
"Nothing really," Rapunzel started pointing her fork at Alton. "I must ask why did you let Jinx live? Our mission was to kill her."
"Does it matter?" He responded, moving the cup around his handshaking. "I just didn't."
"You don't make much sense, Cascade," Lily grumbled, prodding Alton with her spoon. "But you did save us, so I'll let it go."
Alton chuckled, shaking his head. "That sounds just like you, Zinnia."
The three looked at each other confused, as Rapunzel cleared the air. "Who's Zinnia?"
Alton flinched, knocking his cup noodles over, standing up going pale. His hands began to freeze over before gagging, holding his stomach. "I- I just…"
The alarm ran as everyone looked up with a displeased look. "Break time is over already?"
Alton took serval deep breaths as serval guards walked into the canteen armed. "Zephyr squad to your cells at once."
Alton glared at the guards without much of a response walking out escorted out. Cuffed, he walked past seeing Jinx; both glanced at each other as Alton looked backbiting his lip. The guard assigned to him seemed in a hurry as he was thrown into his cell. Sitting down, Alton took serval deep breaths holding his head. "Why can't you just forget about them… Team Rhapsody is dead."
"You're right." Alton's head rose, seeing the guard leaning against the bars staring Alton down. "You've accepted that truth, now haven't you?"
With his eyes fully widen, Alton stood up, stepping back in horror. "That voice, that's not possible."
"Isn't it? Tell me, Child of the Garden, what do you see as impossible these days? You've become sloppy, and we're knocking on your front door, Alton Brantley. It's been a while, hasn't it, though? Last time we met was back on the island. I did warn you next time I won't show any mercy."
"Acceptance…"
Acceptance grinned, twisting his head to his side, mocking Alton. "Now, shall I show you a terrible truth?"

Dreams or Another World - Not a Zero (Update 09/19/21)
(Updated 09/19/21) Hello and welcome. If you made it this far and the book title sounds interesting, I'm hoping you'll read a few chapters. Here's a sample from chapter 1 of "Dreams or Another World - Not a Zero."Slowly starting to wake up, I become aware. It's like coming out of a fog.Head hurts.Body hurts. There's a conversation in the room. This isn't my bed. Someone is touching my arm. I crack my eyes to look. She doesn't notice. Is she praying for me? Her hands do feel good…do feel... Slipping back unconscious, my eyes slowly close. I didn't notice the soft green glow under Jenn’s hands.*******************"It does look like he saved them or at least stalled them long enough for us to get there." says the man dressed more like a park ranger than an officer of the law. "I did think he was part of it at first" he continues "but the evidence shows he wasn't there and they were certainly fighting on that back road where we found them""I don't care who he is." says a woman as she enters the room. "He saved and protected my Jenn. I will make sure there's not a mark or a scar on him before he leaves". As she continues the few steps over to the men speaking, even though dressed simply in common clothes, there is no doubt the race of elves is in her heritage. The grace and lines of her form. The elegance and lightness of her step. She glances at her daughter, still watching over the young man in the bed. "Do we know who he is yet?" she asks no one in particular."Not yet dear" a man in a white coat responds. A handsome middle-aged man. Fit, but not that of a fighter or ranger. "I asked Talon to bring another identification stone with him. I was hoping ours was just broke, but it's reading the same.""What do you think is wrong?" Talon asks."I'm thinking we just have to wait until he recovers. I have heard of cases where the stone didn't work. Powerful spells can hide or wipe a person clean. I doubt he's a spy or a criminal. Spells like that are just too high level if, they're used at all. My best guess is, there is just some disconnect with him being unconscious. When he wakes, we can ask him or use the stone again then."I find myself waking up in a hospital bed. The attending Doctor finds it odd that he cannot identify my class. An Officer says I’m a Hero for saving a girl from being kidnapped, but he’s asking too many questions for my liking. I know an accusing tone when I hear it. I don’t remember any of it and I need to find my way home.Author’s notes. Original work. First draft and update of chapters 1-16. Inspired by various fantasy games and books. Written with a focus on character development and interaction. Combat, progression, leveling, classes, but no numbers or stats. I’ll try to keep the language clean, PG-13, no smut. I’m in the US, writing in English. Almost fifty chapters are completed as I pen this introduction. I intend to complete this story or at least bring it to a proper ending. I have a destination in mind. I find as I write, doors and ideas open, while others close and are discarded. The tentative release schedule will be once a week. I'm new to creating. My apologies now while I learn. I have not settled on a book cover or artwork, still looking for something that fits. Registered & Protected #20VjeKDv2U6nynW6

Take Two!
College student majoring in botany has a fateful encounter with truck-kun while trying to get back in shape after realizing that his freshman 15 turned into the sophomore 20, and then the junior 30. After going through a very amusing(to some) hell, he gets the chance to transmigrate into a body of his own design on a magical world. Playing to his strengths, he chose the Plantkin race, and the new name of Sorrel to match. This is a slow-paced, magical, slice-of-life story with a focus on relationships. There will be sex(I'll try to keep the explicit stuff to a minimum, but it will be there), swearing, really bad jokes, and enough food to spoil your diet. There will not be a lot of action, epic quests to save the world, or anything even remotely resembling a big-bad-evil-guy(a few smaller bad guys, sure. But, no BBEG). Note: This is a re-write of my first story "Congratulations, You're Dead!". And, is much more what I wish I had written in the first place. The characters and the world are very similar, with a few key differences. The story may borrow some elements from Congrats, but should be considered as its own work. Reading Congrats first is not needed, or even reccommended, not unless you want to see some really cringey romance in the early chapters.
