Celestial Peak Chapter 195

The Holy Light's Selection is one of the most important events that happens every ten years. It was an event that selects the next Son of Heaven through the most rigorous and strict selection method.
Ever since ten years ago when the Son of Heaven broke through the Celestial Phase and graduated and chose to lead one of the realm's armies in the heart of the central regions. The seat of the Son of Heaven had been left empty for far too long.
Many vied for the position of the Son of Heaven, people who wish to become the successor of the Heaven's Will Academy and receive the chance to decipher the Heavenly Tomes was something every holy cultivator dreamed of.
In the wide and tall gates of the Heaven's Will Academy, Wang Ling was walking leisurely without a care for the world. The gates of the Heaven's Will Academy was situated on a mountain peak, so Wang Ling was ascending every step of the way.
A great number of people was lining up to enter the academy, yet he walked confidently as he passed them by. Many looked at him with mixed emotions.
Some were looking at him surprise while most irritated.
"Hey! Whoever you are, no one is to cut in line. The right to witness the selection is something many of us wishes to see, do you think the righteous Heaven's Will Academy will let someone as disrespectful as you in!?" It was a long long yell.
Wang Ling heard it but chose to ignore it. This action of his caused many of the bystanders to become even more irritated.
"Arrogant bastard! Do you think you are some kind of hotshot!?" someone cried out.
But Wang Ling still didn't turn his head and continue going up. The commotion he was causing turned into an uproar that was so huge that it opted the students who were ordered to control the populace.
A saint flew from above and hovered overhead. Wang Ling did not raise his head nor did he stop walking. Such act prompted anger from the students.
"Halt! Do you not know how to show respect? Halt your steps, to witness the selection everyone must face the same challenges, for you to walk past the line means you are showing disrespect to the [Holy Light]. You are in need to be punished."

Wang Ling stopped his steps, this caused the student who was mouthing off to smirk. But seeing Wang Ling not raising his head, the student frowned once more.
"You! Go and raise your head, do you not…" He was cut off as Wang Ling suddenly raised a golden letter from his storage ring. The letter was shining brilliantly and caused the students who came there to come down and kneel before Wang Ling.
They trembled as they stared at the dirt, their breathing uneven as they began to profusely sweat. They knocked their heads on the ground as they all proclaimed:
"We have disrespected a Heaven's Candidate by not showing him proper respect, we deserve a thousand lashes yet it will not suffice for the vile acts that we have showed a candidate."
In front of them was a candidate, no matter who it was, a candidate were on the same level an Elder. To shout at an Elder-level existence means they are challenging the authority of the Academy and the Holy Light. They could be killed by Wang Ling and no one would dare say anything about it.
They trembled for their lives. Many were cursing the hot-blooded youth who was throwing his weight around. As they all trembled in fear, a gentle and valiant voice was heard.
"Raise your heads, students." They all raised their heads and saw Wang Ling showing them a smile, they found it odd. Candidates were mostly haughty people who was prideful of their position, to see someone like this was new to them.
"I need not punish you for you were merely doing your job, you shout at me to get me back in line so the order could be kept. I know the hardships you will face if you do a sloppy job, so I forgive you for such an act…" Wang Ling paused and had the students stand up.
Pah!
The students were sighing in relief, but Wang Ling was not done speaking as he then suddenly slap the man who was shouting at him. The slap itself was weak, but the crisp sound it made was something that rocked the hearts of many.
The student looked at Wang Ling with a weird and confused expression. He thought he was off the mark yet why did he get slapped? He touched his right cheek.

"Like you said you deserve punishment, but this slap is not for you doing your job but for the excessive pride you possess. You willed it for me to raise my head so you can look down upon me did you not?" Wang Ling asked a question and this caused the student to turn red in embarrassment.
He nodded his head as the piercing inquisitive gaze of Wang Ling made him quiver.
Wang Ling continued his words, "Pride is a wonderful thing, but arrogance is not. You are a student of the Heaven's Will Academy, not the Heaven's Will Academy itself. Your identity as a student does not give you the privilege to throw your weight around."
Wang Ling looked around and then saw many people hiding in the crowds. He already knew they were the ones shouting and yelling at him, he smiled inwardly but showed a naïve expression outside.
"I had been keeping my head forward and not saw the face of those who talked badly of me. I cannot punish you all in the hopes of venting misplaced frustration, so, I shall head inside."
Wang Ling treads the mountains with a calm and collected look on his face. Those who were previously yelling at him now stared at his back in awe at his magnanimity.
Then, they heard the student who got slapped utter something in realization.
"A son of heavens acts with kindness and valiance, a mighty warrior who punishes the evil while keeping the heart of a hero. To walk with the people of heavens he is showing humility and to walk for the gate of the academy, he is showing respect for the Holy Light."
If the bystanders were previously looking at Wang Ling's back with awe, now it had the mix.
Staring at his back as he entered the gates of Heaven's Will Academy many were watching him in reverie as if he was no ordinary man. This was a true candidate they all thought.
Beyond the gate, Wang Ling showed the letter once again and the guards scrambled as they led him to a carriage. Wang Ling was asked to rode the carriage so he can reach his destination on time.
The carriage was pulled by a Celestial God Stage beast, the beast was a Starlight Pegasus, so the flight was quick.
Around noon, Wang Ling passed through the entirety of the Heaven's Will Academy and reached a colosseum. The colosseum was called the [Holy Light Colosseum].
It was a large place where hundreds of thousands of people could sit side by side to witness the candidates challenge the trials they will be presented with.
Wang Ling got out of the carriage and was greeted by an old looking fellow. He was led inside a lighted pathway and then was made to enter a room.
From outside, he could hear cheers, but he chose to ignore them. In the room, he was the only one there. He snacked on the peanuts that was in the room and started thinking of complicated matters regarding his cultivation.
Time passed and Wang Ling was asked to step outside of the room. He came out of the room and once again, he was led to a path. This time, he was not led into a room, but was respectfully asked to stay still before he gets called.
He arrived last minute so Wang Ling was not aware of what actually was happening. But as he stood in that dimly lit path and the white light that is reminiscent of the light one sees a tunnel exit.
He waited and as the voice and the cheers coming from that light began to grow louder and louder, Wang Ling knew it was about to begin.
"The Successor of the Green Holy Peak, [Blessed Green Light], Li Yourong."
A roaring crowd was heard.
"The Successor of the Secluded Peak, [Steel Fist], Qin Lim."
Another roaring crowd was heard.
"The Successor of the Radiant Peak, [Radiant Spear], Xiang Ning."
It was the same as before.
"The Successor of the Light's Will Peak, [Heavenly Sword], Zhuan Jie."
There was a chant and then silence.
Wang Ling found this weird, but then again, the call was heard.
"The First Young Master of the Wang Family, the [Magnanimous Young Master of the Monarchs (Wangs)], the [Guardian of the Weak], the [Bloody Maelstrom of the West], and the Prince of Divine Light, Wang Ling of the Wang Family."
Wang Ling stepped out under a roar of cheers and from the crowds, he could hear the cheers of a lass and a young man, "Kick their assess Big Brother!"

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
