“As your mother included your address in the letter, I came to find you and your grandmother. Everyone assumed that I was your father when I enquired about you and your grandmother in town. I should have corrected them, but I didn’t, for I was willing to marry your mother if she couldn’t find your father. I planned to take you and your grandmother along as well so that we could all live together.”

Lu Jijun then paused and wiped the tears off his eyes.

“There has been no news from your mother since then. I’ve asked many people for help to obtain news about her, but all I heard was that a woman had fallen into an ice lake at Mohe and that her body was never recovered. I wondered if it could be your mother, but I never had the courage to verify it. Sometimes I’d like to think that some kind stranger had saved her and that she’s still alive somewhere in the world. He then looked up at Ye Tianxin and emphasized, “Tianxin, I promised your mother that I would treat you like my own daughter. I’ll take care of you and your grandmother.”

Ye Tianxin flashed him a small smile and reiterated, “I am not my mother. She lived for love. I don’t.”

Ye Tianxin knew that she was nothing like her mother, and she would not abandon her child and mother for a man.
