Chapter 52 – School (3)
Chen Feng and Chen Daiyu left the school and spent the rest of the day together. It was only towards the evening that they got a call from the principal saying that Chen Daiyu passed with full score and would be arranging her in class 2 which was the best class in the 1st grade.
When Chen Feng relayed the news she was ecstatic that she was going to go to school.
He paused for a second and then added.
“You actually got full marks on the test, though some of its content covered the 2nd graders’ curriculum.” He turned to look at Chen Daiyu, “which your tutors haven’t had the time to teach.”
Chen Diayu froze at this and inwardly cursed her stupidity. In her nervousness she had forgotten there were things she wasn’t supposed to know.
“I must have gotten it from daddy. Daddy is very smart and capable, so as your daughter I got all your good qualities.” Chen Daiyu seamlessly smiled at him and put her arms up, signaling him to pick her up.
“That you did.” Chen Feng didn’t pursue the topic further and picked her up.
After dinner, Chen Daiyu sneaked off to her room.
She still hadn’t calmed down from the scare. She realized she had been careless, but Chen Feng never seemed to question her.
Not when she switched the safety pin of a gun. Not when she shot her kidnappers. Not even right now, when she seemed to know more than she should.
She was scared that his attitude wouldn’t last.
Bang!
Her door was suddenly opened, she instinctively shoved her hand under the pillow but felt nothing. She was stunned and looked at the intruder.
Boom!

“Yu Yu congrats!” Lu Ji who held party pooper in his hands.
Small pieces of confettis fell on her shoulder, her face was full of shock and her complexion was pale. Chen Feng, who had come when he heard a commotion, froze.
He immediately rushed up to Chen Daiyu who was still frozen.
In that moment, all she could think about was the helplessness she had felt when she died because she wasn’t capable enough.
“I-” she felt she overreacted to her uncle’s good intentions, she was about to apologize but Chen Feng prevented her.
“Lu Ji, this isn’t a place where you can run about and pop a party pooper. you’re not a kid anymore, why are always you so childish?” Chen Feng would’ve shouted at him if it were not afraid of scaring the little rabbit, “Clean this up the mess you made.” Then, Chen Feng took the little rabbit with him and left the room.
Lu Ji:… but I’m the eldest!
Lu Ji didn’t have a chance to apologize to Chen Daiyu, he frustratedly scratched his head feeling guilty. Who knew his niece who shot someone fearlessly was afraid of a party pooper. He didn’t even doubt that Chen Daiyu could be pretending because he felt that her expression was too real.
But still, he stared at his mess. Hmph! I won’t do it! I’m the eldest, why should i follow his orders?!?
Lu Ji crossed his arms but felt his legs weak when a maid gave him a broom and a dust pan.
…Hmph! Just this once he thought to himself for the nth time and started cleaning up the confettis.
______
Chen Feng took Chen Daiyu to his room to clear up what happened.
They sat down across each other, Chen Feng looked at Chen Daiyu patiently.

Chen Daiyu just stared at her hands, she could feel her heartbeat throbbing in her head, cold sweat drenched her back. Thousands of excuses ran through her mind but everytime she tried to say something, nothing escaped her mouth.
After a few minutes without getting a response, Chen Feng patiently patted her head. “It’s alright if you don’t want to talk about it, go rest. We’ll celebrate tomorrow.”
Chen Daiyu felt that if she gave no explanation now, she wouldn’t get a chance to in the future.
She hurriedly caught his hand and made him look at her in surprise.
“Hic- daddy, “
Her teary eyes made him soften, he sighed helplessly and comforted her. “What’s wrong? If you don’t want to talk about it, I won’t force you” and no one will. He silently promised.
“Daddy, don’t you think I’m weird? I learn too fast, Miss Neng also once said that our lessons surpassed that of a 3rd grader’s. I can shoot guns…” Chen Daiyu made up her mind, she only told half truths.
Chen Feng stared at her solemnly, a bit out of character from his usual fox-like smiling self.
“Such an easy question, do you even need to think about it?” His answer made Chen Daiyu stunned, he looked at her red eyes and told himself. You really are a little rabbit. He sighed.
“It’s because you’re my daughter. It’s only natural to be a genius among geniuses.” Chen Feng sounded arrogant but the resolution in his voice made Chen Daiyu almost believe him…
He wiped her tears with his big hand. Chen Daiyu felt the warmth of his palm that could easily cover her face. “Little rabbit, you’ve really become one. If your grandfather sees this he’ll think someone bullied you. If he asked you that, just say uncle Lu Ji did it” Chen Feng then went back to smiling. And there was a bit of evil glint at the corner of his smile.
“You won’t abandon me, right?” Chen Diayu couldn’t stop herself from asking, “no matter how weird I am?”
Chen Feng looked down at his daughter, regretting all the time they had missed together due to his own cold-heartedness and stupidity.
“I won’t leave you ever again.”

Through Mist, Veil, and Summer
Anna Lawrence is a quiet girl who'd rather sit and write poetry than bustle about with her peers. After an incident resulting in a panic attack and a trip to the hospital, Anna's foster mother sends her to stay with her aunt and uncle for the summer. Upon arriving in the small mountain town of Glenwood, Anna finds herself caught in the machinations of another world on the other side of the fog: warring witches, animal-headed skypirates, and the boldest, bravest, most interesting girl Anna has ever met. THROUGH MIST, VEIL, AND SUMMER is my homage to Studio Ghibli films. It's a fantasy romance with a dash of adventure and a sprinkling of self-contemplation. It's a story that moves a little slower, a little quieter. It is my fourth novel, written between October 1, 2017 and January 6, 2019.
