Chapter 49 -Training
Chen Daiyu woke up on time, it was neither late nor too early. She had learnt her lesson and tidied herself before she went downstairs where the maids greeted her.
“Miss Ji, where are grandpa and Yijun?” The maid surnamed Ji was startled, she didn’t expect that the little miss who had just arrived in the mansion, pampered by the whole family, would even remember their names.
“Miss, you can just call me Ji Lian. Old master is in his courtyard training his successors,” the maid replied. She was neither humble nor arrogant, her poise was perfect that no one could find fault.
“En, thank you.” Chen Daiyu nodded and jogged away. Ji Lian also went back to what she was doing and they parted without any of them looking back.
On the way, Chen Daiyu wondered about what Ji Lian said. ‘Training his successors’. Aside from her daddy and cousin’s demise, there were no other people from Shan family are mentioned.
So, who was her grandfather training?
She knocked on her grandfather’s door and waited for a while but no one answered. She felt that it would be rude to just barge in and contemplate for a while before she closed her eyes and focused her attention on the sounds around her. The faint noises from the courtyard became clear.
She could hear exaggerated exhales past the door, though it was too far for her to still clearly tell what was happening.
“Eh? Yu Yu what are you doing in front of uncle’s room?”
Chen Diayu jumped, and looked behind her to see Lu Ji approaching with a plate of watermelon.
Her face was pale and her voice shook, “Uncle, when did you arrive?”
She made a shocked face and gave her best smile.

“Just now. Why don’t you come in?” Lu Ji bit his watermelon and twisted the door knob open. Chen daiyu hesitantly came in, trying to hide the cold sweat she was sure could be seen through her clothes.
Old Man Shan’s room had 2 doors, one led to his inner room and the other led straight to his courtyard. They naturally went to the latter.
While walking, Chen Daiyu’s eyes still held some fear that was well hidden. She asked her uncle innocently, “uncle, how come I didn’t hear your footsteps just now?” She looked up to Lu Ji with bright eyes.
Looking at her sparkling eyes, Lu Ji’s heart softed and felt like bragging to his niece.
“You see little YuYu, your uncle has been rigorously training in martial arts his whole life.” Lu Ji bragged. “I may not look like it, but i am second in command in our special force,” and your father is the leader but Lu Ji only said this in his head, otherwise his spotlight would be stolen.
Chen Daiyu’s eyes genuinely shone this time. In the past, special forces in the military included some of the most dangerous people she had gone against. Meeting one of them peacefully made her gulp with excitement.
“Really uncle?!”
With his nose high above the heavens Lu Ji smugly replied, “Yes! I am quite awesome, aren’t I?”
“What kind of missions do you go on?”
Lu Ji froze as if splashed with cold water. That’s right, what had he been doing? Doing slave chores for your daddy!!
No matter how much Chen Daiyu pestered him, Lu Ji kept his lips sealed, claiming it was all confidential.
They finally reached an open area where there were children, 11-15 years old, training. She suddenly understood what Ji Lian meant by successors. All of these children had great physiques and potential.

Seeing his lovely granddaughter come in, Old Man Shan told the children to take a quick break.
“Grandpa!” Chen Daiyu ran towards old man Shan and hugged his thigh. Old man Shan happily crouched and carried Chen Daiyu.
“What are you doing here?” Old Man Shan looked lovingly at his granddaughter.
“I missed you,” Chen Daiyu looked dejected, “I never see you after breakfast.”
Old Man Shan laughed heartily at this, “I always come back to train these brats all day long, but you can come anytime and spend time with me.”
Chen Diayu nodded enthusiastically, “I’ll come everyday after I’m done with my classes.”
Old Man Shan continued to instruct the children as Chen Diayu watched attentively from the side, memorizing all their routines and Lu Ji gave her detailed descriptions of what they were doing.
The children were finally dismissed before sunset, and each went to their courtyards in the house. They lived off to the side and had living arrangements organized by the Shan household, but they barely ever went to the main buildings.
Old Man Shan, Lu Ji, and Chen Diayu were walking to the house for dinner when Chen Daiyu finally remembered.
“Uncle, where is big brother yijun?”
“Hmm? He went to school.”

The worst part is...I still have to watch when that thing takes over my corpse. I call it the Gray. I can't do anything even when it's hunting down those I'm trying to save. Sometimes, I wonder. When I level, I swear I can hear a voice speaking to me. This thing...can it think?
