Chapter 9 – Chen Feng’s Suspicion
Xiao Daiyu didn’t know her parents in both lives. Due to the nature of her previous career she let go of the need for a family, so it had been a long time since she had longed for parental love. Seeing as she was currently a child, she buried her head in Chen Feng’s chest while he patted her head.
Chen Feng sighed in relief after she stopped crying but didn’t notice her ears turning red.
Their adorable interaction was seen by the waitress who had just come in with the meals in but did not want to disturb them. She really wanted to have a picture of such a cute daughter and father moment, unfortunately she wasn’t allowed to have her phone on her during work hours.
After a few minutes, Xiao Daiyu reluctantly released Chen Feng and slowly went back to her seat, perhaps Chen Feng could see her reluctance and chuckled.
Their ‘interrogation’ ended just like that.
When they finished their meal, Chen Feng drove her to an orphanage. It was late afternoon when they arrived.
Seeing the pair coming in, the caretakers couldn’t believe that they weren’t related.
Chen Feng filled in the paperwork of Xiao Daiyu’s personal info himself. Usually, the people at the orphanage had to do it themselves since the kids were usually abandoned by their parents at the gate, so it was strange that someone else was doing it instead. Watching their interactions, they noticed that the man wasn’t as simple as he seemed, but they did not comment on it. Their little orphanage really couldn’t afford to offend big bosses.

“What’s your name?” Chen Feng asked.
“Unnamed,” Xiao Daiyu smiled meaningfully, but Chen Feng didn’t understand her.
‘Unnamed’
Agents like them were normally orphans and usually didn’t have names, rather, they received their codenames when the organization assessed their capabilities after going through hellish training.
Xiao Daiyu was unironically named ‘unnamed’, not only to add mystery to her profile as an agent, but because the organization described her potential as ‘unlimited’. Unfortunately she was killed while she was killed by people that felt threatened by her abilities before she could begin to grow them.
Chen Feng saw her dazed state and carefully assessed her eyes for any emotion that would give her away. After all, no child could do what she had done earlier. But as he looked at her black eyes he decided her name.
“Then your name will be Daiyu from now on, it means ‘black jade,’” Chen Feng said with a smile, “you’ll be called Xiao Daiyu,”
Chen Feng normally had an insincere smile, but if anyone who knew him well saw him right now, they would definitely see the warmth it contained. They would also question if they had eye issues or were hallucinating, but that’s besides the point.
Xiao Daiyu was dumbfounded at the unexpected affection, but quickly covered it up with a happy smile.
“How old are you?” After filling in the name, Chen Feng continued his questions.
Xiao Daiyu shrugged as she was not sure herself.
Buzz-
Chen Feng took his phone out of his pocket and opened the messages his nephew had sent. When he saw what he wrote, his eyes deepened.
[The little girl’s eyes are very similar to yours]
He had naturally noticed as well, but with his nephew’s second opinion he was more sure of his theory. An unknown emotion took over his eyes, but it was gone in a flash.

“You should be around 6.”
Xiao Daiyu obediently nodded, but the caretakers objected.
“Mister, Xiao Daiyu looks to be around 5 at most… I think 6 is a little bit old,” a kind-looking old woman spoke.
“She seemed to have lived in the streets for quite a while before I found her, and she was quite malnourished. Due to lack of proper nutrition she would not be able to grow the same as others her age. If you feed her well she’ll start to look her age.”
The kind-looking old woman saw the logic in this and nodded and… As for food, if their donations were enough this year to feed the children, they definitely wouldn’t mistreat them.
No one objected anymore.
“I’ll donate 5 million every year for the orphanage, make sure they’re all well fed and have enough commodities,” Chen Feng took out a cheque and wrote 5,000,000 with his signature.
The caretakers were delighted.
Xiao Daiyu and the caretakers saw him out until his car was out of sight.
She pouted and reluctantly went in with the caretakers.

“You’ve taken your sweet time”
Seeing his uncle arrive, Shan Yijun stood up and followed him back to the car. Shan Yijun didn’t criticize his uncle like he used to, but watched Chen Feng’s expression.
His uncle was unusually quiet. He didn’t even smile like he usually did, even in front of Shan Yijun’s iceberg of a father.
It was a rare moment of solemness for his uncle.
Shan Yijun watched as Chen Feng decisively took out his phone along with a small ziplock bag that contained a lock of black hair. He assumed that it was from that little girl.
His call went through after one ring, Chen Feng didn’t greet the other person but directly ordered them.
“Investigate what happened to that woman 7 years ago then meet me at our mansion in Yun town as soon as possible.” It was quick and bare, with no explanation of what it was for. He hung up after talking.
Shan Yijun was surprised. That could only mean one thing, it was possible that that little girl was actually…
While on the other side of the phone, Lu Ji stared speechlessly at his phone. He felt like strangling his past self for choosing to follow this ungrateful fellow.
Unfortunately, they were childhood friends.
Forget it, I’ll forgive you this one time…
Lu Ji had already forgotten how many times he had told himself that.

The word count ranges from ca. 1800 to 2800 words. The story collection is completed with a total of fifteen short stories and two extras. Although a possible future continuation is generally an option, it is not too likely.*******This is my first time publishing one of my fictions. I am using this short story collection as a way to test the waters before I seriously consider publishing a novel. As English isn't my mother tongue, I would appreciate it if native speakers, anglicists or any other proficient users of the English language could kindly inform me about any mistakes in grammar or word choice so that I may correct it. The same applies to any sentence or paragraph that may sound unnatural in English.

Reasons to Stay
Immortality has a cost, it differs from person to person. Some regret seeing their loved ones die, some regret they themselves cannot die, some regret the boredom and some regret nothing. This man regrets not having a choice, so after millions of years of getting shot, beheaded, beaten, stabbed and stoned he escaped from the world by hiding in a bunker with his books. He had studied all forms of science, he had lived history and created art, he was content with being alone with his mind until one day a man with a monocle appears, and he learns the truth. Hi! This is my second novel and I just had this idea when I was trying to sleep and my mind was making me re-live all those goddamn nightmares you don't want when it's 1 am and dark as shit, so I thought of happy things like the fantasy genre and my inevitable death and i'm like why not?

Black Meridian
Here's a fact about humans: They are intelligent, versatile creatures with a tendency for murder and vice. Zeta, a swordsman from a villa at the summit of Greenwich Mountain, has heard many stories about the "Sigma World," the colloquial term for any and all things superpowered in the world. He's also heard of the many tragedies, as well as the many wonders humankind has created in its history, even if he has yet to see it in person. Following the philosophy of his teacher, Gin Kagan, Zeta intends to become a "Servant of Humanity," in an endeavor to protect mankind from its gravest threats, from power-hungry sigma-users, but most importantly, from itself. He's going to need a lot of allies to pull that off, even if he doesn't understand that just yet. This story is originally published at www.sigmacentral.wordpress.com. Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Dia, forced to wield arms, begins and ends a battle that opens her eyes to the vast dangers that lurk in this sundered world. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess.
