The Abandoned Hunter Chapter 154

He was quite excited when he took a look at all those and was quite happy, but then when he took a look at the last rune, he was rather confused.
All the runes did have a specific color such as the Rune for Strength was red, for Agility was yellow, for magic was purple, for buffs and healing was green but when it came to the rune of las veronica, it was black colored.
It was basically like some writing that were written using ink on a white paper.
'That's weird, why am I not able to take a look at what the Rune is about?', Jay was now confused and was continuously staring at the Rune again and again regardless of the attacks that were directed towards him.
"Jay! Have to done yet?", Res called out and asked in a raised voice.
'I'm definitely sure that once the runes are used up, the attacks will stop!', was what Res thought.
But after hearing that, Jay just looked towards Res and then lowered his gazes yet again because it seemed as if he was thinking something.
"Yes, it will be better if I wear these runes...", was what he said in a low voice.
The buffs and raise in stats that would be provided was extraordinary due to which he was mesmerized.
That was why he literally wanted to try them and wanted to see the chances of winning against the Sorcerers!
'Let's see, which should I wear first?', he asked himself while looking at all the runes that were in his hand.
"Hmm... maybe I should first wear the rune that would increase the stats of both, attack and defense...", was what Jay said to himself.
He decided that he would go with the Rune of Strength and wear that on his left hand when all of a sudden his hand froze even before he could pick it.
His instincts probably prevented him and were telling him to chose something else.
He also hesitated a bit because of the uneasiness which he felt and the bad taste that was present in the mouth that was generated as a reflex reaction.
He took a look at the very next Rune that was present.
'Rune of Buffs and healing...?', he wondered about that for a second.
All of a sudden he realized why his instincts prevented him from choosing the rune of strength as the first rune.

"Oh my God... If what I'm thinking is correct then this would actually work as a chest for me!", Jay's eyes sparkled when he said that as if he figured out something.
"The Rune of Buffs and healing amplifies and boosts the buffs..."
"Then wouldn't it amplify the boost provided by the other runes if I wear it first?"
His eyes widened when he said that because without a doubt he was correct.
The system earlier clearly stated about the runes in which it was shown that the rune of buffs and healing could increase self buffing by 100% which meant that whatever the user or host would buff by himself without it occurring naturally would be basically doubled!
So now that after getting the runes and using it as a buff, he would literally be buffed by 400% if it was initially 200% that would mean that his total power levels would be at 500%!
The moment Jay realized that, he started to smirk because this was basically once in a life time opportunity.
'BOOM'
Another fire ball blasted right in front of him.
Res observed that the attacks hadn't ceased yet so he knew that Jay hadn't wore the runes yet.
'Why hasn't he used them yet?', Res thought about it.
He took a look at the statue from where the attacks were being fired.
He finally figured out the location of it and that was why he was just waiting for Jay to use them so that he could become stronger and then figure out the location.
But right now Jay was doing a good job in pissing Res off.
'Since this rune will provide me buffs and heal me...'
'I should probably...'
All of a sudden he removed the shirt which Res had given earlier and threw it towards Res.
The moment the contact with Jay was broken, the shirt became visible once again.
"Sir Res, please hold this for me!", Jay shouted.
Res saw that the shirt was flying his way so he walked a few steps and grabbed it.
"Alright!", Res said.
He was now sure that Jay was going to wear those runes and probably that was why he removed the shirt.
'The rune that will support others should be near my heart...', he placed the paper with the rune near his heart and then almost immediately the rune vanished.

The only thing now that was visible on the left side of the chest was a white colored rectangular paper.
He slowly removed it only to find no mark on the chest but for some reason he could feel a slight burning sensation from it.
'Next...', he took a look at the Rune of strength which he put on the left hand a little above the wrist.
After that was the Rune of agility which he put on his right leg because he thought that placing it there was the best thing since his legs were what that helped him in running or increasing his agility.
Next was the rune of magic which he put on the left leg subconsciously without even realizing while he actually wanted it to be on his right hand.
"Uhh... let it be.", that was all that he said after realizing it.
He then took a look at last rune that was left.
All this time the attacks were still being directed towards him but he didn't even bother to think about them.
All his concentration was focus only on what he was doing right now.
"Well, the system also didn't give any information on what this rune is...", was what he said to himself.
"Hmm, no use of wasting time. Let me just wear it...", right after saying that he placed the rune on his right arm just below the wrist towards the lower side.
Right after that he started to remove the papers that were stuck on his body one by one.
Now finally all the runes were probably engraved in his body because wherever he placed the runes, he could feel a slight burning sensation from those areas.
But those burning sensations weren't that severe as to hurt him. Instead, it felt warm and good as if it was improving his body slowly and steadily.
He looked a bit at the places where he had placed the runes and saw that there were no marks left.
He sighed in relief and was about to undo his stealth when suddenly he realized that the attacks that he had been experiencing since earlier was no more to be seen.
Furthermore, the cry that was being heard again and again was also stopped which literally surprised him.
"So, was that all because of there runes?", he asked himself and then took a look at Res.
He was then about to call out to him when suddenly he noticed that Res was looking somewhere else particularly with an awe.
He too turned his head a bit left in order to see what he was specifically looking at with such an interest.
"Huh...?", he was completely surprised when he looked at the said direction.
He had raised his head a bit and in his line of sight, he could see the huge statue's face which was covered with tears.
"What the...", he was too confused but more than that he was astonished to see that the eyes of the statue were moving here and there as if it was trying to search something.
"This is...", Jay undid his stealth and then slowly walked towards Res in order to ask what was happening.
"Sir Res.... this statue... what is it...", he wanted to know about it and thus asked when Res just stared at Jay and shook his head.
"I have no idea about this...", while seeing this he handed over the shirt which he had been holding for a while now.
Jay took it and put it on after which he too started to stare at the statue when all of a sudden the statue started to speak.
"Who are you?", was what the statue asked.
"Ha!?"
"Huh?"
Both Res and Jay were completely surprised when they heard that.
Jay hesitated a bit and then said, "I am Jay, and he is Res..."
"But... who are you?"
The moment Jay asked that, the eyes turned down and were staring right at Jay as if it sensed exactly where Jay was standing.
"Me...?"
"..."
"I am the owner of this staff...", she said with a low yet audible voice.
"Owner of the staff...?", Jay asked while looking at Res because he failed to understand what the statue meant.
"And no matter what happens I won't let you steal this!", all of a sudden she raised her voice and literally roared!
"..."
To be continued...

Tips to reading: This is my first book, so cliches and tropes are used as the base and then expanded upon. My intention is to make it a casual read but deep if you decide to look closer. I'm not a people person, so my focus and purpose for writing this is to explore the world building and magic system, not necessarily the characters. There won't be a villian until the postgame ;) Author's philosophy: I took an professional personality inventory (through a community college back in 2018) and was categorized as a "double-checker." I'm never satisfied with the work that I complete, and never want to share it with anyone. But this book is a challenge to myself! As a rule of thumb, I will only add to the story. I can't remove elements I've already included (unless absolutely, absolutely necessary). PS, I'm a native English speaker.

Apollyon's Curse
Within the pages of folklore and fantasy, tales of people who chase after the dream of eternity, of living forever, rarely find a happy ending. They are either struck by the grim truth of reality, give up, and return to mortality or face a ghastly realization of their wishes. The latter often the worse fate, as they come to realize, only far too late, that what they sacrificed was worth far more than the time they gained. Ultimately, the common thread in these stories is that “immortality is as much a curse as it is a blessing”. People either realize it early and give up or are doomed to inevitably face its consequences. In the world Enrich lives in, that saying does hold merit. Every pathway towards eternal life has shackles of its own. They bring those high above down to the ground, evening the playing field. It is thanks to these fundamental laws that ambitious mortals are able to defy the heavens and achieve immortality themselves. The variety of methods result in each of these bindings varying in intensity and degree of freedom. Enrich’s path doesn't break this trend. Though, after what he did to himself, most wouldn’t even consider him a living thing anymore. On the day of his ascension, a world’s worth of souls were melted and recast. On that day, the human’s path had reached its conclusion, recast into Apollyon. An artifact, a weapon, is eternal, after all. As for the curse? The payment will be made, as it must. So why not offload the curse to someone else? Mortals throw their lives away for all manner of petty reasons, noble or otherwise, especially in desperation. Eventually, someone will be willing to foot the bill. Most will if given the chance. The bait is far too tempting, after all. Power, status, knowledge. All at their fingertips. If only they say “yes”. And Apollyon is very willing to help any lost souls. If they give up everything in return, of course.
