Chapter 1239: What a Shame
Translator: Transn Editor: Transn
“Su Mo!”
The young man in black went up to Su Mo and spit out the words.
Su Mo who was absorbed in his meditation opened his eyes promptly. He glanced at the young man in black and the young man in luxurious clothes. Immediately, everything was clear to him.
Trouble was coming!
Su Mo said nothing but just stared at them flatly, waiting for them to speak.
“You stole my brothers’ storage rings. How daring! I am giving you a chance to repay them double and apologize!” The young man in black said coldly.
He had intended to kill Su Mo, but considering that Su Mo might be related to Grand Master Huoyuan, he made a compromise for fear of stirring up trouble.
“Impossible!” Su Mo shook his head in reply.
Return double?
What an idiotic nonsense!
He did not have that much wealth. Even if he did, he would not hand it over.
The reason he had robbed them was that they came to extort them first. They had only themselves to blame!
“You are so reckless!” The young man in black shouted with killing desire in his eyes. The young man in luxurious clothes clenched his fists in rage.
“Fine, since you don’t agree, you have to accept my challenge. Do you dare or not?” The young man in black yelled at Su Mo in an earsplitting voice.
The Shenwu Academy’s disciples around the Ultimacy Sacred Mountain were startled by it. They stopped perceiving Ultimacy and stared at them.
“Isn’t it Leng Jiang, from the Northern House?”
“And He Chuanyan!”
“Which House does the other guy come from?”
“He is from our Southern House, apparently named Su Mo. He once offended Taishi Xuan!”
Many disciples began discussing in low voices, waiting to see what would happen.
Faced with Leng Jiang’s challenge, Su Mo answered flatly. “I’m not interested.”
“Really?” Leng Jiang said with a sneer. The next moment he had suddenly attacked Su Mo.
Boom!
His iron fist shot out straight for Su Mo’s head.

This punch was incredibly powerful. The fist force, like a furious dragon, could deal devastating damage.
The punch came so fast that it was near Su Mo’s face in a second.
“You want to die!” Su Mo burst out in anger. He never expected that Leng Jiang would attack him with no warning.
He tilted his head back in haste and raised his hands to block the punch.
The next second.
Boom!
Leng Jiang’s fists hit Su Mo’s palms. It was like two enormous mountains crashing against each other. There was an earth-shaking sound.
Swoosh!
Su Mo was knocked away by the punch. It sent him flying backward scores of miles away before falling to the ground.
Leng Jiang stood tall and straight with Ultimacy appearing on his face. He stared frostily at Su Mo in the distance and said, “Rubbish, do you dare accept my challenge?”
He wanted to anger Su Mo and force him to accept the battle.
However, he was inwardly alarmed because he thought his punch would have gravely injured Su Mo, but Su Mo just stood there, unharmed.
Although he had learned from He Chuanyan that Su Mo’s strength was formidable, Leng Jiang was still astonished by what he had seen.
A martial artist in the Emperor-to-be Realm could withstand the fistwith 50% of his strength. This overstepping fighting ability was certainly horrible一it could even compare to that of the Holy Sons of the Academy.
Su Mo steadied himself and glared at Leng Jiang sullenly.
“Senior Flaming Ghost Sage, what cultivation does he have?” Su Mo asked Flaming Ghost Sage with his Mind.
He could not identify Leng Jiang’s cultivation clearly, guessing that he might be in Rank 3 Martial Emperor Realm or Rank 4.
“Rank 3 Martial Emperor Realm.” Flaming Ghost Sage responded.
Su Mo understood immediately that if Leng Jiang was in the Rank 3 Martial Emperor Realm, he would not be too powerful.
However, Su Mo himself was not fully confident that he could defeat a martial artist in the Rank 3 Martial Emperor Realm. Although his strength was more powerful than those in Rank 2, it was still hard to triumph over martial artists in Rank 3.

“Fine, I accept your challenge!” Su Mo nodded as he stared at the arrogant Leng Jiang.
He would not shrink back if he was being bullied. He would not fear anything, even a powerful enemy. It was merely a battle.
“Good! Tomorrow morning, a showdown between you and me!” Leng Jiang said with a laugh when Su Mo agreed to fight him.
Now that Su Mo had accepted the challenge, everything would be solved easily.
“After a month!” Su Mo said simply. He was not confident that he could fight Leng Jiang tomorrow, so he had to put it off to give himself time to increase his strength as much as he could.
“Are you stalling for time?” Leng Jiang said as he narrowed his eyes slightly. He was not foolish. He knew that a lot of things could change within a month.
He was fully confident that Su Mo would not surpass him within a month.
However, he was worried about Su Mo finding help or pressuring him through Grand Master Huoyuan.
Having thought for a while, he nodded and said, “Okay. After a month, you and I will have a battle!”
Leng Jiang was not very concerned because he was also supported by someone else although his backer was far from Grand Master Huoyuan.
“Let’s go!” Leng Jiang said to He Chuanyan, and then turned around and left.
“Su Mo, as I said, you will pay for it!” He Chanyan threw look at Su Mo and sneered.
He seemed to foresee Su Mo being killed and his soul being crushed.
He Chuanyan then turned around and left as well.
Su Mo sighed and felt depressed. He wanted to cultivate his strength quietly, but trouble kept coming to find him.
Of course, he was also to blame for this trouble because he was too vicious.
Moments later, Su Mo also left and returned to the Academy.
Word of the battle between Su Mo and Leng Jiang was heard by the disciples around the Ultimacy Sacred Mountain, so the news soon spread in the Academy.
…
After returning to his tower, Su Mo sat cross-legged on the futon and lowered his head, pondering on how to improve his strength at the fastest rate.
Currently, in order to increase his strength, the only way was to break through to the Martial Emperor Realm!
“Young man, what a shame indeed!” Flaming Ghost Sage suddenly spoke.
“What shame?” Su Mo frowned slightly.
“Hehe! With your talent, you’re supposed to sweep all and stand out in the young generation, but instead, you were humiliated by a nobody. What’s worse, you are too cautious and timid. Isn’t it a shame?” Flaming Ghost Sage spoke disdainfully.
Su Mo’s face fell. He had not even reached the Martial Emperor Realm, let alone sweep everyone. What nonsense!
“I have accepted the challenge. Why do you still think it’s a shame?” Su Mo said glumly.
“Of course it’s a shame. Through this battle, you can make your name known in Shenwu Academy and display your incredible talent. In the future, you are bound to dominate your peers and thrill the whole world with your majestic and powerful strength,” Flaming Ghost Sage said domineeringly.
Not fooled by the grandiloquence, Su Mo said with scorn, “Nonsense!” Did the Ghost Sage hope Su Mo would die faster?
He had neither background nor strength. If he followed the Ghost Sage’s words, it would only bring him disaster.
“As a rare genius in the universe, you should act like a real genius一showing your aura and towering over others. Only with lofty aspiration can you go further in the future!”
Flaming Ghost Sage spoke slowly as if trying to persuade Su Mo to alter his life principles.
Su Mo shook his head. “Let’s put that aside. Now, you should tell me how to increase my strength as quickly as possible.”
He would not believe Flaming Ghost Sage’s words. Keeping a low profile was king in a world where experts were respected and slaughter never ended.
Without sufficient strength, having a high profile merely led to dying faster.

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!

Madness Led by the Hands
‘Great, no… splendid. It was for naught.’ ‘Naught? Depends. If your desire is to send an army of killers our family’s way, yes indeed. If it’s plain survival you seek, then no.’ ‘They don’t coexist?’ ‘What… don’t tell me you’re still all groggy from the fall. Perhaps in novels, but real life is much tougher–––many more times a drag than anyone can possibly imagine. If dusty history is not a reliable teacher for you, then the pandemic surely took that place. At least that one has the advantage you needn’t be literate to savvy how reality always trumps imagination.’ ‘Whatever you say, whatever you say. So… what now?’ ‘Now? Isn’t it obvious? Now we shall survive. And live a good life.’ ‘Ohh… pretty much everything here has something against this little weird wish of ours. Might you consider?’ ‘Then pretty much everything here is a goner.’ ‘Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. Too much trouble, you see. I’d prefer laying low somewhere safe.’ ‘…nobody told you it’s mutually exclusive, no–––or did you forget about that too?’ ‘Fine, then I wish my future enemies all the best.’ ‘They are undeserving of your pity.’ ‘Of course not. That unlucky bunch won’t ever comprehend the reason behind their demise. Just let me smoke in peace and offer my condolence in advance.’ ‘Idem, let me study alchemy, unobstructed by all, if possible. This also includes you. By the way, are you sure you smoke to offer condolences? It seems like an excuse to me.’ ‘I-it is none. Plain truth, you see?’ ‘Seriously, why did I even ask...?’
