Pantheon Online Chapter 34

Colt sighed as he used Minor Blessing to bring himself back up to close to full health. He had struggled to finish off the last few remnants of the Devout Souls as they became wise to his strategy. It also helped the Devout Souls that the more he got rid of, the more space they had to manoeuvre.
He had almost fallen off the edge himself when they first dodged his charge. Luckily, one of the others smashed him with their shield, which stopped him in time. Colt was unsure whether it was done on purpose or not, but it no longer mattered.
Colt glanced towards the open door at the end of the bridge. 'Let's see what you guys were protecting.' He kept his axe and shield at the ready. Just in case there was a surprise waiting for him. As soon as he crossed the threshold of the doorway and left the abyss behind him, the doors ground to a close.
New, blue lights lit up the new area for Colt to catch a glimpse of what was waiting for him. There was another bridge spanning another canyon. A circular platform took up the centre of it. However, three Devout Souls were standing there waiting for him.
One was holding the standard spear and shield he had dealt with in the last area. The second held two one-handed axes, while the last one had a sizeable two-handed hammer. 'Why does it look like it should be easier?' Colt was apprehensive about the new situation. Just because it looked like it would be easier did not mean that it would be.
In fact, there was a good chance that it would mean the opposite. Colt started to move towards them, and the Devout Souls readied their weapons but did not move. It was as if they were waiting for him in the small circular arena. Colt eyed them carefully as he tried to imagine how a fight with them would go.

The only problem was that he only had the other Devout Souls to base the strength of these three on. He frowned as he noticed the Devout Souls twitch as he was about to take another step. 'I guess this is the line. They'll probably attack the moment I cross this space.'
Colt prepped his shield to receive the first blow as he rushed forward. The Soul who had the shield and spear came forward to meet him. It swung the spear in a wide arc instead of thrusting it. Which caught Colt off guard. It was a very player-like thing to do, which made these mobs feel more natural.
As Colt blocked the spear, he was flanked by the other two. A pair of axes hit his shield with such force that splinters actually broke off from it! Just as he was surprised by that, he felt a dull pain in the right side as the Devout Soul with hammer struck.
[-5 HP]
Colt gaped at the damage he had just been dealt. It was the highest amount of damage he had ever taken in a single strike! 'They're a lot stronger than the others. It doesn't help that they actually work together!'
Colt lashed out towards the hammer-wielding one only for it to block his strike using the handle of its weapon. Colt coughed as the shield-bearer slammed into him, winding him in the process. A sharp pain assaulted the back of his neck, and more damage was done!
[-4 HP]
Colt immediately activated Minor Blessing again at this point to restore his health to full. However, he felt uneasy with how quickly they had forced his hand when he had not hurt any of them yet!
He caught sight of the hammer swinging towards his head and chose to duck below it. Colt hacked at the Devout Soul's leg with his axe, but no damage was done! As he came up behind the mob, he struck with his shield!

'Dammit! Nothing?' Colt had to move quickly to block the spear that thrust towards his throat! Using both his weapon and shield to parry the blows launched at him, Colt was forced into a passive battle. None of his attacks could hurt any of the three, which annoyed him greatly.
'How the hell are you meant to get through this?' His first thought was to toss them off the edge. But none of them took the bait. They were cautious with their footing, and the other two would always prevent him from singling one of them out. Colt was beginning to believe that the challenge was unwindable at his current level.
Still, he refused to go down without a fight! The dual axe wielder hooked his axes over the edge of Colt's shield before pulling on it. Preventing him from accurately deflecting the attacks of the other two,

Colt was losing his cool as he activated Minor Blessing again. Just as he recovered, he felt a solid kick land in the crease behind his left knee. His leg buckled beneath him, forcing onto one knee as he blocked an overhead hammer swing. Colt grunted as he absorbed blow after blow as they rained down on his shield.
'There's nothing I can do.' Colt sighed reluctantly as he struggled back onto his feet. Four more blows made it past his shield in quick succession.

For the third time and the fourth during this fight, he was forced to use Minor Blessing. These two uses meant that his DP had run dry, and he could only rely on himself for now. Colt put up a good fight until he was kicked to the ground by the dual axe wielder. As the Devout Soul swung his axe downwards, he was suddenly struck by the hammed wielder by accident!
Colt noticed that the Devout Soul seemed to be in pain from the blow. His eyes went wide as he stared at that reaction! 'It's not a test of brute force, but of your technique!' Finally, Colt had an idea of what was expected of him…

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
