Chapter 374: A Cunning Person
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
“Yes, he seems to be. Why?” asked Chen Ying.
“A mayor of a poor county is supposed to be very busy with his work. Why is he in Beijing so often?” asked Wang Yao curiously.
“He is a deputy mayor. I heard that his main role is to attract investment. Everyone here knows what he does. So he just came here to attract investments and donations,” said Chen Ying. It was not uncommon for employees of local government to travel around to attract investors.
“Oh, I see,” said Wang Yao, who now understood the whole situation.
He could feel it clearly that Guo Zhenghe approached him for a purpose. He didn’t like it.
What does he want? thought Wang Yao.
He didn’t think too much about it. He just decided to keep his distance with Guo Zhenghe. The more time he spent with Guo Zhenghe, the more he understood that Guo Zhenghe was a complicated person. Wang Yao thought that beneath those nice looks, Guo Zhenghe was a cunning person.
The temperature dropped by eight degrees overnight. It was quite cool the next morning. Wang Yao felt that autumn had finally arrived.
This was what autumn was supposed to be.
This was how Wang Yao felt about the weather. He thought about Nanshan Hill again as he looked at the withered yellow leaves in the courtyard.
Don’t know what happened to the my trees and herbs on Nanshan Hill. I hope my parents haven’t worked too hard. I hope San Xian, Da Xiao and Xiaohei are all doing well.
Wang Yao only left Nanshan Hill four days ago, but he had already started to miss it.
Meanwhile, there were still people in the village visiting his clinic.
“How come he is not here?” said an elderly man as he was looking at the notice on the door of Wang Yao’s clinic.
“He’s away,” said the person who accompanied the elderly man to the clinic.
They were not the first ones looking for Wang Yao while he was away.
“Where did Dr. Wang go?” asked the elderly man. “It is not easy for us to travel all the way here.”
Wang Yao didn’t know that over 10 people had visited his clinic when he was away. They all left with disappointment, including Chen Changfeng.
“Mr. Chen, he’s not here,” said Chen Changfeng’s assistant.
“Where has he been?” asked Chen Changfeng.
“His parents told me that he has gone to Beijing,” said his assistant.
“Beijing?” said Chen Changfeng after keeping silent for a moment. “Did his parents mention when he will come back?”
“They are not sure. They said Dr. Wang should return in about a week. It’s Thursday today already,” said his assistant.
“I see. He should come back soon. Thanks. Keep an eye on the clinic, but don’t disturb his family,” said Chen Changfeng.
“Sure, Dr. Chen,” said his assistant.
“Hey, it seems that Fenghua’s son is quite a capable young man. There have been quite a few people going to his clinic,” said a villager.

“Yes, I’ve seen cars coming to the village. Maybe I should ask Yao to have a look at my leg,” said another villager.
“Haha, I hope he won’t break your leg!” said the other villager.
It was autumn. The villagers were not too busy after harvesting peanuts and corns. Therefore, they had more time to gossip.
“Fenghua, more and more people came to ask about Yao recently. I don’t know what Yao is doing in Beijing,” said Zhang Xiuying, who had started to miss her son already. Like the old saying, a mother always worried about her child who was away from home. She didn’t feel it when Wang Yao came home every day.
“That’s fine. Just make sure you don’t talk too much.” Wang Fenghua was the same old Wang Fenghua, who was smoking and talking minimal.
Since Wang Yao had successfully created his herbal field on Nanshan Hill, Wang Fenghua hadn’t asked too much about what his son was doing.
“Leave him to do what he likes,” said Wang Fenghua.
He thought his son had grown up. Wang Yao had his own thoughts and career. As long as Wang Yao had a good life and obeyed the law, Wang Fenghua didn’t care what his son did for a living.
He and his wife couldn’t help their son with his career anyway.
It was windy and cool and gloomy in Beijing. Wang Yao felt it was bleak to walk in an old lane of thousands of years of history.
“I like autumn,” said Wang Yao as he looked at the sky.
“What?” said Chen Ying with confusion.
“Let’s go,” said Wang Yao with a smile.
He went back to Su Xiaoxue’s house to conduct another treatment on Su Xiaoxue.
Su Xiaoxue had felt more obvious changes in her body in the last few days. She was truly getting better every single day. There had been more changes over the past day since Wang Yao’s last visit than there had been in the ten days before it combined. It was such a wonderful thing for Su Xiaoxue. Apart from her recovery, she also noticed another change; the expanding of her Qi.
“Good,” said Wang Yao after reviewing Su Xiaoxue. He also found the expanding Qi inside Su Xiaoxue’s body. It didn’t surprise Wang Yao. He had transferred Qi into Su Xiaoxue’s body several times. Part of the Qi was used to fix her body. A small proportion stayed inside her body untouched. However, Su Xiaoxue didn’t know how to induce the Qi, so she couldn’t take advantage of the remaining amount. In addition, the Qi didn’t belong to anyone. It would disappear over time. Part of it would turn into some sort of energy and became part of her body. Whatever was left would mingle with her own Qi. That was why her Qi had expanded.
“The Qi inside your body is a wonderful thing. You can try to induce it,” said Wang Yao.
“How?” asked Su Xiaoxue with confusion.
“Well, it’s part of your body now. Use your mind to control it,” said Wang Yao with a smile.

It sounded tricky, but Wang Yao was telling the truth. Like the newborns attempting to put their fingers into their mouth when they turned three months, they would fail in most occasions at the beginning. The newborns couldn’t control their arms at the beginning. It took practice, ongoing practice. Therefore, Su Xiaoxue needed to practice for a long time to be able to control her Qi like Wang Yao did.
“Okay, I’ll try,” said Su Xiaoxue.
“Good,” said Wang Yao.
Wang Yao had the instructions of inducing Qi, but he couldn’t tell Su Xiaoxue. The instructions belonged to the system. It was too complicated to pass it onto other people.
By the time Wang Yao had completed the session, it was over 2 pm.
There came a visitor to Su Xiaoxue’s house, whom Wang Yao knew. It was Dr. Chen.
“Hello, Dr. Wang,” said Dr. Chen.
“Hello,” said Wang Yao.
“Just finished the treatment?” asked Dr. Chen.
“Yes,” said Wang Yao.
Dr. Chen had visited Su Xiaoxue quite often lately, because Su Xiaoxue had been recovering really fast, faster than he could ever imagine. However, Song Ruiping didn’t mention Wang Yao’s innovative treatment to Dr. Chen. She didn’t think it was a good idea to tell other people about it.
“I come too late. I was going to learn something from you,” said Dr. Chen with a smile.
“Please don’t joke about me.” Wang Yao was not an arrogant person. Although he had certain advantages, Dr. Chen was way more experienced than him. In addition, Wang Yao was a modest person who preferred to keep a low profile. “We can discuss it on another day,” said Dr. Chen.
“Sure,” said Wang Yao.
He left after chatting with Dr. Chen for a short while.
Chen Ying left for the house a bit earlier. She estimated the time of Wang Yao’s arrival and had cooked lunch.
“Hi, you are back,” said Chen Ying.
“Yes,” said Wang Yao.
“How is Xiaoxue?” asked Chen Ying.
“She’s much better,” said Wang Yao.
“Lunch is ready. Eat it while it’s still warm,” said Chen Ying.
“Okay,” said Wang Yao.
Chen Ying just cooked some simple dishes, which were all delicious. Apart from her other skills, her cooking skills was as good as those chefs in the restaurants.
“There was a visitor before you came back,” said Chen Ying.
“Who is it?” asked Wang Yao.
“Wu Xiuxian. I don’t think you know him.” Chen Ying said a strange name.
“Right, I don’t know him. I’ve never heard of this name before,” said Wang Yao.
“But he seems to know you. He didn’t stay long, as you were not here. By the way, he left something for you.” Chen Ying pointed at the table.
“What is it?” Wang Yao saw several well-packed boxes.
“Tea, Wuyi rock tea,” said Chen Ying.
“Oh.” Wang Yao wasn’t too surprised. “I guess Mr. Wu is not some commoner.”
“You are right, he’s from a very wealthy family,” said Chen Ying.
“I see. I hope he’s not going to cause any trouble for me,” said Wang Yao softly.
He didn’t have anything planned in the afternoon, so Chen Ying took him to several well-known old herbal shops in Beijing, like Tongren herbal shop. Wang Yao wanted to see how they processed the herbs, but he didn’t get to see anything. Wang Yao wasn’t too disappointed. After all, the techniques of processing herbs were supposed to be secretive. The shop was at least one hundred years old. It was rich in culture.
“You wanna see how they process herbs and brew decoctions?” asked Chen Ying curiously.
“Yes, I’m interested in knowing they methods,” admitted Wang Yao.
“Maybe I can help you,” said Chen Ying.
“Can you?” asked Wang Yao.
“I can try,” said Chen Ying with a smile.
Wang Yao knew Chen Ying would probably able to give him what he wanted.
“Great! I really want to see how they work,” said Wang Yao.
“I’ll ask around for you,” said Chen Ying.
“Okay, thank you,” said Wang Yao.
All the herbal shops had their own ways to process herbs and brew decoctions. Some also had very old formulas. How they prepared herbs and brewed decoctions were confidential. They relied on those techniques to survive.
“By the way, I want to go to the Great Wall,” said Wang Yao.
“Now?” Chen Ying looked up at the sky. It was dark and gloomy.
“Yes, now,” said Wang Yao with a smile.
“Okay, let’s go,” said Chen Ying.
The Great Wall was outside the metropolitan area. It was a fairly long drive for them. Wang Yao just suddenly wanted to go there. The last time when he visited the Great Wall, he practiced air-piercing fist there and made significant improvement. This time, maybe he would gain something else.
Because it was peak hour, the roads were very busy with terrible traffic jam. It took them quite a while to reach the Great Wall. However, by the time they had arrived, it had started to rain.
“It’s raining,” said Chen Ying with surprise.
“So?” said Wang Yao. He actually liked the rain. He liked both thick spring rain and continuous autumn rain.
“Nothing,” said Chen Ying with a smile.
The reason why she said that was because there was no umbrella in the car. To be precise, there was only one broken umbrella in the car. It was broken from the last time she used it and she forgot to take a new one. If they had to get out of the car, they had to walk in the rain. She didn’t like walking in the rain. They were out of the metropolitan area now. She just hoped that she could buy an umbrella at a shop somewhere near the Great Wall.

Howard’s Conan the Barbarian (and the awesome Schwarzenegger movie, STILL my favourite fantasy film EVER), The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Ron Howard and George Lucas’ Willow, to the more grown-up and edgy worlds of grimdark masters George RR Martin and (my all-time favourite) Joe Abercrombie, as well as a BIG DOLLOP of Terry Pratchett’s immortal Discworld series. IMPORTANT: This story contains material which some readers may consider to be mature, such as battle violence, some strong language and occasional mild sexual scenes. If this is not your kind of thing, this story is not for you. I am also serializing this story on Tumblr, Wattpad, Quotev and Sweek.
