Chapter 498: All Kinds of Poisonous Attacks
Translator: Exodus Tales Editor: Exodus Tales
Edited by Aelryinth
Although Zhang Che found it strange, he was very welcoming of these frog-like exotic beasts’ actions. He was originally worried they would run for their lives. Now, he could save a lot of time.
He was elated and ready to summon the scarlet and white sword to begin his massacre.
While the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon was diving down, and was still around two hundred meters above the swamp, the group of bunched up frog-like exotic beasts suddenly raised their heads towards the sky at the same time and opened their huge ugly mouths in unison.
“This… could this be?…” Zhang Che was a little shocked inside. They were still two hundred meters away; could those exotic beasts’ attack reach this far?
Just as the thought sprang up in his mind, something that made Zhang Che’s scalp turn numb happened.
The skin of the frog-like exotic beasts below suddenly swelled up at the chin area. Then, they quickly shrank back to normal size. Streak after streak of gloomy green fluid was pushed out by that sudden change in pressure, shooting high up into the sky.
Countless putrid green fluids mixed together in the air. With the movement of the wind, before the spewed stuff even reached its target, a disgusting, vomit-inducing smell assaulted Zhang Che’s nose.
“This poison… how terrifying!”
Even though Zhang Che reacted to it immediately and covered his nose, that tiny bit of toxin he breathed in brought about a faint spell of dizziness.
He was already a powerful mid-tier beastmaster now, and yet he nearly fainted from the miasma. It went to show how terrifying those ugly frog-like exotic beasts’ poison attacks were!
“Don’t let those water arrows reach here!” Zhang Che hurriedly instructed the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon.
Just a trace of the fumes nearly knocked him unconscious. What if he was accidentally struck by those gloomy green water arrows?
At the same time, Zhang Che summoned the Unicorn out. A white light immediately enveloped him, dispelling his dizziness.
After receiving Zhang Che’s order, the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon breathed out a stream of frozen air, aiming down and freezing the oncoming concentrated arrows of goo into icicles. They quickly lost their momentum and fell.

Seeing that, Zhang Che let out a sigh of relief.
Luckily, the frog-like exotic beasts’ attacks weren’t too fast, even if they were poisonous. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be easy for Zhang Che to hunt them.
“Continue diving down. Kill them!” Zhang Che said coldly. Fortunately his beast card armor came with a mask, filtering some of the toxins away. He would have fainted on the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s back otherwise.
Although he knew the exotic beasts at this swamp were all poison-attributed, Zhang Che didn’t expect the first exotic beasts he encountered to have such poisonous attacks. To say that he wasn’t annoyed would be a lie.
“Master, let this servant take revenge for you!”
Seeing Zhang Che was slightly poisoned earlier, the elemental queen’s pretty face was cold. She waved her hands continuously. Fire arrows quickly materialized around her, raining down at the frog-like exotic beasts, bringing a terrifyingly high heat with them.
The air was twisted from the high temperatures caused by the rain of fire arrows. Sharp hums were audible.
The frog-like exotic beasts below were alarmed after seeing their concentrated attack failing to reap any results. It had always worked before. Now that they saw the concentrated rain of fire arrows coming down at them, they grew even more frightened.
Those extremely ugly frog-like exotic beasts let out frightened croaks. Their strong legs pushed off the mud, directly rushing towards the nearest body of water.
Alas, their reactions were a tad too slow.
The elemental queen was an epic-level combatant, after all. Would the fire arrows she sent out in a fit of rage be so easily dodged?
The rain of fire arrows crossed the two hundred meters almost instantly, shrouding the group of frog-like exotic beasts.
A wave of ear-piercing noises rang out. The ugly creatures who failed to run in time cried out miserably. Golden scarlet flames burned on their bodies, their flesh and blood instantly charred to ash.
The smell of burnt meat rose to the skies along with a sour odor, nearly knocking Zhang Che out again.
Obviously those frog-like exotic beasts’ bodies contained concentrated toxins. Even though they were burned to ash, the toxins were still in play, and able to hurt anything living nearby.

Sensing Zhang Che’s less-than-ideal condition, the Unicorn immediately enveloped him in a ray of white light, dispelling the negative effects on him.
The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon didn’t make a move, while the elemental queen kept waving her hands about. Fire arrows continued raining down, finishing off the leftovers.
The battle ended very quickly. In the end, none of the frog-like exotic beasts managed to escape into the water, allowing Zhang Che to reap a decent harvest.
Those frog-like exotic beasts turned out to be a bunch of five-star exotic beasts. Although their quality was a little poor, at only bronze-quality, the soul force points earned was pretty considerable given the kill count.
“Clean up the battlefield!” Zhang Che shouted. With the first battle concluding, he was very excited. The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon dove down, his mouth opening and inhaling forcefully. The beast cards that were scattered everywhere were all vacuumed up.
This was a new little technique they discovered after the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon advanced to seven-star epic-quality. Although it wasn’t very useful, it was a very practical trick to gather beast cards.
With the experience of hunting those poisonous frogs as example, Zhang Che had the Unicorn always summoned out and staying on the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s back for the rest of the hunt, ready to provide help at any moment.
After all, he didn’t know what kind of poisonous attack he’d come across. Being cautious couldn’t go wrong.
Also, Zhang Che didn’t know if there were any exotic beasts out there whose poisonous attack could kill him instantly. If he didn’t have the Unicorn on standby, it’d be too depressing if it didn’t manage to save him in time and he lost his life out here for no reason.
—–
Indeed, Zhang Che really did come across all kinds of poisonous attacks afterwards.
The exotic beasts here weren’t very strong. The best among them were only at six-stars gold-quality, but their poisonous attacks would often catch Zhang Che off guard, no matter how careful he was.
The one that left the deepest impression on Zhang Che was a type of strange, fist-sized worm-like exotic beast. Their ability to jump was extremely terrifying, able to leap up to a hundred meters in the air. It was nothing if that was all, they wouldn’t be a threat to Zhang Che. The key thing was that those worms would launch a suicidal attack after jumping up. Their bodies would explode one after another, turning into toxins and covering the surrounding hundreds of meters in a poison mist.
At the beginning, Zhang Che was caught off guard and completely shrouded in the poison mist, along with the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon.
The toxins were extremely corrosive. Not only was a layer of the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s translucent crystallized body corroded away, the mid-tier legend-quality beast card armor Zhang Che was wearing couldn’t withstand it, either!
In the end, if it wasn’t for the Unicorn activating its healing skill to dispel the poison, Zhang Che would have suffered a huge loss without knowing it.
Afterwards, Zhang Che became much more careful.
Every time he encountered a new type of exotic beast, he wouldn’t let the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon dive down recklessly. Instead, he had the elemental queen use her fire attacks to probe it. He would only go closer after confirming it wasn’t dangerous and began his massacre.
“Tsk, tsk. This place really isn’t for humans. No matter how many of those beastmasters from earlier came, they would all be poisoned to death by all these weird exotic beasts,” Zhang Che couldn’t help but muse. Coming here to hunt exotic beasts without a healing-type subdued beast was really fraught with danger. With every step they took, they were in danger of losing their lives if they were careless!
—–
Before Zhang Che realized it, he had hunted in this swampland for more than two hours. During this time, more than five hundred exotic beasts had died to him and his babies’ attacks.
Suddenly, Zhang Che heard a familiar loud cawing.
Looking back and up to the sky to the side, Zhang Che’s expression changed slightly, and he felt chills on his back.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
