Chapter 442: Food For the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon

Zhang Che felt the aura coming out from the cave ahead was familiar. Meanwhile, the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon underneath him was already crying out in excitement.
It went without saying the exotic beast inside was Yin, cold-attributed, and an extremely beneficial supplement for the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon!
“So, you can’t hold it in anymore, huh?” Zhang Che patted the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s back, calming him.
As of now, they still have no idea about the situation inside the cave. Even if they wanted to enter, they needed to make the necessary preparations to prevent falling into a dangerous situation.
But it probably wouldn’t be dangerous, right?
The elemental queen and the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon had already confirmed it. The exotic beast inside shouldn’t be able to hurt him.
Zhang Che muttered to himself for a short while, then summoned both the Scarlet Flame Drake and the Purple Crystal Tortoise in succession. He let the two forge the way ahead, while he followed behind on the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon, delving into the cave.
Just as they entered the cave entrance, a cold aura swept towards them, making Zhang Che shiver all over, goosebumps rising on his skin.
He couldn’t help but furrow his brow. If an ordinary person was in his place, they would find it very difficult to withstand this cold. Although it didn’t have much of an effect on the surrounding temperature, the cold aura directly seeped into his bones. It was too much to bear.
Similarly, the elemental queen and Scarlet Flame Drake weren’t fond of the cold aura, either.
The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon, on the other hand, grew even more excited. If it wasn’t for Zhang Che stopping him, he would have lost all control and directly rushed into the cave.
“Be more careful, all of you. Don’t get ambushed by the exotic beast inside,” Zhang Che instructed. The group slowly pushed forward.
Naturally, the one at the fore was the Purple Crystal Tortoise who had the most outstanding defense, followed by the Scarlet Flame Drake.

Zhang Che and the elemental queen both sat atop the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon, and followed closely behind.
The cave extended straight in, and was extremely dark. Fortunately, the golden flames on the Scarlet Flame Drake were like a big light bulb, illuminating the surrounding hundred meters, sparing Zhang Che the fear born from being in an unknown darkness.
Humans always felt a sense of fear, born from the depths of their hearts, in unknown environments, no matter how strong or weak they were!
—
The deeper they went, the thicker the cold aura around them became… and Zhang Che finally remembered where that sense of familiarity came from!
“When I killed that dark ice-attributed python back then, the lake also had a similar environment, didn’t it?” he finally recalled. It was precisely after devouring that dark ice-attributed ice python that the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon grew much stronger and his potential increased!
The feeling inside this cave was extremely similar. It was no wonder the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon was so excited. Perhaps this would be the place where the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon had another fortuitous encounter and grew stronger again?
Zhang Che immediately grew excited, too!
As long as the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon ranked up from this… Zhang Che wasn’t hoping for his pet to advance in quality. Even if he only broke through, the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon should be able to break through the sound barrier, achieving supersonic speed!
Zhang Che’s eyes lit up. The fear of being in an unknown environment disappeared without a trace.
What was there to fear? Any place that could strengthen his pets or subdued beasts were good places!
The underground cave didn’t extend straight endlessly. After advancing a hundred-some meters, the path ahead started winding.
Suddenly, a few nearly unnoticeable air vibrations came from the depths of the underground cave. A few black silhouettes flew out from the underground cave like black streaks of lightning, directly pouncing upon Zhang Che’s party.
“Woof!” the Scarlet Flame Drake barked. A few golden-scarlet sparks shot out from its mouth, sweeping towards the black silhouettes.
As for the Purple Crystal Tortoise, it wouldn’t attack casually without Zhang Che’s order. After all, although the bone spikes could be retrieved after shooting them, doing so would waste some time. Unless it was necessary, it was best to preserve that kind of killing move.

The scarlet sparks the Scarlet Flame Drake breathed out were very fast. However, the black silhouettes were even faster, directly dodging its attack and continuing towards Zhang Che.
“Hmm? These exotic beasts’ level and quality aren’t low; they’re actually at five-star gold-quality!”
Of course, what surprised Zhang Che the most was that these exotic beasts, called Extreme Yin Bats, were clearly more than a tier weaker than the Scarlet Flame Drake, and yet they were able to dodge its attacks. Despite it being only its ordinary attack, that was really unusual.
However, Zhang Che didn’t make any moves himself to retaliate against those Extreme Yin Bats rushing at him. The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon had already indicated his strong desire to devour them. If Zhang Che slew the Extreme Yin Bats, only beast cards would be left behind, providing no benefits for the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon!
With a loud, excited roar, the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon directly rushed forth, opening his mouth and breathed out several streams of darkfiend cold air, accurately hitting those Extreme Yin Bats. Their bodies froze, falling to the ground.
Naturally the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon wouldn’t let them drop to the ground just like that. He opened his mouth, and a vortex of wind drew all of them into his mouth with a satisfied cry.
“This guy… he ate a hundred million dollars worth of food in just one bite!” Zhang Che sighed. Raising a pet really wasn’t easy! To make things worse, Zhang Che had way more than just one pet, especially the Umbra Wind God Leopard. The difficulty in trying to make them all grow as soon as possible simply couldn’t be put in words.
If Zhang Che or his subdued beasts killed those Extreme Yin Bats, the beast cards he would have obtained would earn him about a hundred million dollars! But they were swallowed by the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon in just one mouthful, seemingly just stuffing the gaps between his teeth and not providing much benefits to the dragon.
“Alright, since you want to eat those Extreme Yin Bats, there’s nothing I can help you with. You go hunt them on your own,” Zhang Che sighed, patting the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s back.
The Extreme Yin Bats were too small. If Zhang Che attacked with the scarlet and white sword, they would no doubt be killed straight away. The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon wouldn’t be able to gain anything from that.
On the other hand, although corpses would be left behind if the elemental queen killed exotic beasts, her attacks were of the fire attribute. She’d easily burn those Extreme Yin Bats to a crisp. What would be left to eat, then?
The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon roared excitedly, showing he understood.
The Extreme Yin Bats were too weak for the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon. They wouldn’t be able to cause any trouble at all, and thus he didn’t need any external help, either.
Afterwards, they continued exploring deeper. Extreme Yin Bats would fly out from the cave non-stop, becoming food for the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon one after another.
Zhang Che was a little shocked by this.
-Isn’t the cold energy around here a little too strong? So many five-star gold-quality exotic beasts are nurtured here!-
In other places across the beast world, five-star gold-quality exotic beasts were basically all solo adventurers. It was very rare for them to gather in groups with their fellow species.
If it wasn’t for them being extremely beneficial to the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon, Zhang Che really wanted to kill them all and use their beast cards to increase his fusion skill’s level!
However, compared to increasing the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s strength, leveling up his fusion skill really wasn’t important.
Zhang Che abandoned that idea and continued exploring deeper with the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon.
—
Following the winding underground path, they continued at least several thousand meters deeper. The cold aura around them grew increasingly thicker. Even with Zhang Che’s superhuman physique, he started to feel the cold piercing into his bones.
Heavens knew how deep this underground cave was…

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
