Chapter 285: The Bane of the Demonic Energy

Zhang Che was incredibly shocked; he couldn’t understand what had happened at all. His thoughts were frozen, unable to process anything.
Below the rainbow crystal, the newly-appeared golden vortex looked like an extremely small dot which could be easily missed if you weren’t paying attention.
However, at this moment, Zhang Che’s entire focus was drawn to that tiny golden vortex. He felt that this miniscule vortex was incomparably huge and could take in the entire world.
“What is that?” Zhang Che wondered. Suddenly, his soul was sucked into that golden vortex.
An extremely profound feeling filled Zhang Che’s mind. His eyes were closed, but it was like he could see everything around him.
The Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon was circling in the air, while the Scarlet Flame Drake, Purple Crystal Tortoise, and Unicorn were on the dragon’s back in that exact order, every detail of their bodies visible to him.
A slight breeze went through the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s shield and blew on Zhang Che’s face. He felt as if he could feel every bend of the wind.
In that wind, there was a desolate and slight smell of decay. Zhang Che could sense it very clearly; it was the odor of this world.
Zhang Che could even see himself sitting on the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s back, his eyes shut, looking calm.
With a thought, the red sword flew out of his spiritual sea, circling around the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon like it was an extension of his arm, drawing a beautiful arc in the air.
The red sword slowly flew further and further away, and his control only became a little awkward when the red sword had flown to about a hundred meters away from him.
Zhang Che was overjoyed. He opened his eyes and recalled the red sword, an extremely delighted glint in his eyes.

The current range at which he could control the red sword had slightly more than doubled!
-What exactly is that tiny golden vortex?- Zhang Che had no way of knowing. However, he knew that it must be something incredible. Other beastmasters had almost no chance of obtaining it, unless they also had something like the rainbow crystal.
That was almost impossible, however. A treasure like the rainbow crystal was very likely to be a unique object in the beast worlds. How could other people have one as well?
“A hundred meter range. That’s totally enough. Maybe that golden vortex will become stronger if I continue to hunt those strange creatures and absorb their mysterious energy…”
Although he didn’t know what that golden vortex was, that didn’t stop Zhang Che from feeling happy. It was fine as long as it was beneficial to him; why care so much?
Not only that, Zhang Che, having read many Xianxia novels in his past life, was even thinking that this might be a legendary primordial spirit! Although… this possibility being true was miniscule at best.
The golden vortex only made Zhang Che’s soul clearer, and allowed him to sense his surroundings when he focused, as well as have better control over the swords. There was none of those more profound abilities.
If it really was a primordial spirit, its capabilities shouldn’t be this limited, right?
Based on those novels, a primordial spirit had divine sense, and could scan a wide area in its surroundings like radar, not missing any detail.
On the other hand, this golden vortex’s capabilities were worlds away from reaching that level.
Shaking his head, Zhang Che sent his gaze below.
In the center of the mountain peak where the strange insects gathered earlier, the black fog that was all sucked in by that savage gigantic worm in one go was actually wafting out slowly from the crater. Although the amount was extremely small, Zhang Che saw it clearly.

The golden vortex in his spiritual sea was still beneficial. At the very least, his five senses had become sharper. Despite being a thousand meters away, he could clearly see that little wisp of faint black fog.
-What exactly is in that mountain?- Zhang Che narrowed his eyes. Afterwards, he had the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon turn around and fly towards the peak.
The black savage worm had already been blasted into powder by the Unicorn’s Lightning of Purification. There shouldn’t be any danger below them left…
As he thought of that, Zhang Che paused for a moment.
He was distracted by the many changes in his spiritual sea earlier and had forgotten about this.
The black savage worm was so strong that even the Scarlet Flame Drake and Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s combined skills could do nothing to it. How was it possible that the Unicorn’s skill had killed it just like that?
It wasn’t like Zhang Che didn’t know the Unicorn’s skill only sounded awesome. It’s destructive power was actually nothing to brag about. All this while he had been neglecting it.
“Lightning of Purification… Lightning of Purification..!” Zhang Che mumbled the name of the skill. His eyes suddenly shone, finally understanding why this skill was called Lightning of Purification.
It seemed like the skill would only deal earth-shattering damage when used on evil, demonic type of energies!
This discovery immediately skyrocketed the Unicorn’s value in Zhang Che’s eyes.
Zhang Che estimated that there should be quite a number of powerful creatures like the savage gigantic worm in this secret plane. If he could encounter more such high-level creatures, the Unicorn could totally kill them and earn Zhang Che a huge amount of the mysterious energy!
The only point to take note of was that the Unicorn’s skill had a cooldown time of one day, unlike the Scarlet Flame Drake’s skill, which used its vital energy to perform. The Drake could return to Zhang Che’s spiritual sea and recover quickly.
“One day… so be it. It would be really great if I can kill one of those powerful creatures every day!” Zhang Che revealed a satisfied smile.
At this moment, the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon had descended to the mountain peak. Zhang Che had the Scarlet Flame Drake, Purple Crystal Tortoise, and his other babies get off first, making sure there wasn’t any danger on the mountain peak, before he jumped off too.
The ground of the mountain peak was like cracked glass, fissures could be seen everywhere.
This was the result of the Scarlet Flame Drake and the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon’s ice and fire combo. It went to show how devastating it was when they worked together.
In the center of the mountain summit, the black fog had filled up quite a bit of the crater, and was increasing at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Zhang Che didn’t dare to risk himself. He had the Scarlet Flame Drake approach it and breathe out a column of flames into the crater.
Although this stream of flames wasn’t the innate fire elements the Scarlet Flame Drake had, it was extremely hot nonetheless. Ordinary rocks would explode from the heat in an instant.
However, when the flames were shot into the crater, the black fog wasn’t affected at all.
Zhang Che’s expression immediately froze. Afterwards, he recalled his babies without hesitation and mounted the Darkfiend Abyssal Dragon, leaving.
He didn’t dare to take the risk. If there was anything in that crater and it suddenly flew into a rage from his provocation, the end result would be unthinkable.
Cats weren’t the only thing curiosity killed; even humans died because of it!
It was close to noon. After thinking for a bit, Zhang Che continued heading deeper into this mountain range.
Going forward, he’d kill as many of those strange creatures as he could!

Disclaimers: Chapter Frequency: I aim for one chapter a week. Chapter Length: I try to keep chapters between 3000 and 6000 words. Binge Preference: I plan for 30 chapters per arc. If you want to binge a complete arc, then that is the number to wait for. I will also add a line to chapters indicating the beginning and end of an arc. Advanced Access: I have created a patreon page with early access to four chapters for patrons. What to Expect: Progression fantasy with a western fantasy setting and with eastern fantasy elements. A main character that is forced to explore a very narrow path of magic due to a permanent condition. A main character that is a part of a larger cast. A main character that is growing but won't become the strongest around anytime soon. A story following a single main character but with introduction or theme setting scenes without the main character. What Not to Expect: Edgy grimdark characters – I will never write a sexual violence scene or gory descriptions of torture. I hate reading it and I would hate writing it even more. Romance – romantic relationships will never be the focus of the story and only appear in the background. The main character is preoccupied with other stuff. Other forms of relationships (family, friends, companions) play a bigger role. Cover: The cover art was commisioned from redditor Linh-Nguyen87. The font is alita brush by Inovatype Typefoundry.
