Chapter 162: Examination Method

After Zhang Che had his meal, he went down to the supermarket on the ground floor of the hotel and bought a large bottle of water, then returned to his room. The flat-faced classmate and the other unknown fellow examinee were already asleep.
Well, at the very least, their eyes were shut.
Zhang Che couldn’t be bothered with what others thought of him. He changed into his slippers and went to wash up. After that, he laid down on his bed and closed his eyes, slipping into the land of dreams after a short while.
—————-
After that, there weren’t any ridiculous happenings, like that flat-faced classmate harboring hatred and waking up in the middle of the night to stab Zhang Che. No such things happened.
Although he was a little reckless, it wasn’t like the flat-faced classmate was truly brainless. His life would be over if he really did that, and he would even implicate his family. Unless he was insane, no one would ever think that way.
Moreover, Zhang Che’s spiritual strength was far above that of his peers. Even after he fell asleep, he would remain alert. His army of powerful beasts and pets would appear in droves if something was wrong, ensuring anyone who harbored ill intent would be in huge trouble later.
In his dream, Zhang Che realized he was surrounded by all kinds of food, the kind where he wouldn’t be able to finish it all in a year…
Everyone was called up at seven the next morning. They hurriedly washed up and went down to the hotel lobby to have a simple breakfast, before being assembled. A few large buses were employed to transport them to Jin City Central Plaza.
——-
The plaza was the gathering point for over ten thousand examinees from all over Hua Xia. Later on, the organizers would publically announce the examination method.

Zhang Che could vaguely sense that the examination method this time would be unusual.
After all, it wasn’t an easy task to measure the actual abilities of tens of thousands of students. There were too many factors involved. The traditional methods wouldn’t work.
As expected, when Zhang Che’s group arrived at Jin City Central Plaza and everyone was split to their respective areas, the organizers immediately announced the first rule of the examination.
First, confirming the beastmaster tier of all examinees once more. A strict warning was given to not conceal any information. Otherwise, the examinee was personally responsible if their final results were affected in any way.
Actually, they wouldn’t be able to hide anything even if they wanted to. It truly was too simple to examine the beastmaster tier of the examinees. A small spiritual strength measuring device was all it took.
Zhang Che immediately tensed up. -Shit, won’t my Tier Four strength be exposed then?-
Although he had Huang Juyun’s promise, and Zhang Che wasn’t afraid of drawing too much attention for displaying too much strength, he was used to concealing his true abilities.
If he didn’t conceal his strength, wouldn’t it be dangerous if he came across some accident? If he didn’t conceal his strength, wouldn’t it be much less thrilling when he set someone up?
Now, it was all down the drain. Gone…
Watching the staff in charge for his row of fifty candidates slowly getting closer to him with that little spiritual strength measuring device in his hand, Zhang Che’s complexion started to turn complicated.
He really wished to expose his true height. That way, he could get to the back of the line, and delay for a little longer.
Of course, he had to face the situation when the time called for it. It was useless even if Zhang Che stood outside of the plaza.
The flat-faced classmate of Zhang Che was standing in the row next to his. He noticed the “fright” in Zhang Che from an unintentional side glance, and immediately grew ecstatic!

-Heh, could it be that this brat got into here by fixing the numbers, and is actually not a Tier Two beastmaster, but a Tier One newbie?
-Right, that must be the case!
-I knew it; how could a trash whose spiritual strength barely hit the standard rise to Tier Two in barely over a month?
-Heh heh, let’s see what sort of trouble you’ll get into!-
Naturally, the flat-faced classmate wouldn’t be so dumb as to report him. The staff would come over and conduct the measurement soon anyway. He could just sit back and watch the show!
-What do I do?
-Do I really have to expose the fact that I’m Tier Four?-
Seeing the staff getting closer and closer, and now conducting the spiritual strength measurement on the person a few spots before him, Zhang Che grew even more anxious. Beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
The flat-faced classmate was ecstatic as he watched this scene play out!
-You damn gigolo! Did you think this examination is a small matter? Did you think you can deceive your way through with the help from Huang Tielan’s family?
-Let’s see you getting your lies exposed!-
Finally, it was Zhang Che’s turn!
The flat-faced classmate’s face turned red from excitement. He had never felt this exhilarated before.
Following the staffer’s instruction, Zhang Che silently stuck the two wired pads on his temples. After that, the staffer operated the device in a swift manner. He looked at the figures shown on the device’s screen and compared them with the figures Zhang Che submitted at school previously, shaking his head.
-Youngsters nowadays… Don’t they think about how important this examination was? He actually still thought of hiding his strength.
-Did you think the organizers would leave such a loophole for you to exploit?-
“Ha…” The flat-faced classmate nearly burst out in laughter when he saw the staff shaking his head. Luckily, he remembered what kind of a situation he was in in the nick of time and hurriedly covered his mouth.
However, his momentary laughter was still very abrupt in this silent plaza.
As such, everyone around them turned their head in his direction, fixing their attention on him.
The flat-faced classmate felt really embarrassed. He could only keep to himself, thoroughly ignoring all the gazes on him.
-Hm? Not right; shouldn’t that guy be immediately thrown out?-
He couldn’t help but feel greatly doubtful when he saw the staff continue on as if nothing had happened. He nearly asked out loud, but fortunately he was still rational and kept it in.
Alas, that staff had noticed him earlier. Seeing him acting as if he had something to say, he immediately stopped and asked, “This student, is there any problem?”
“No… ugh, may I ask what’s the beastmaster tier of that student, Zhang Che?”
The flat-faced classmate originally wanted to say nothing, but under the sharp gaze of that staff, he ultimately decided to speak what was on his mind.
“Tier Three,” the staff said casually and moved on to the next examinee.
-Tier Three!
-How could it be possible? Shouldn’t it be Tier One?!-
The flat-faced classmate immediately felt as if the entire world had deceived him. He stood there in a daze, feeling as if he was the only sober being in this world, and a sense of loneliness assaulted him…
Zhang Che looked at the flat-faced guy with an unnoticeable smile, heaving a huge sigh of relief in his heart. -During crucial moments, the rainbow crystal is still the reliable one!-

The Cosmic Interloper
Synopsis: A cyborg transhuman escapes her corporate indenture and through unfathomably unlikely circumstances, she ends up in a fantasy world of full of unique magic, angry people with sharp implements, and the whole flavor-spectrum of divine entities. Hilarity ensues. Features: - No blue boxes or cultivation, this is not a LitRPG nor about martial arts - Hard-ish Sci-Fi meets hard-ish magic - Generally trying to keep this "rational" Rationale: My primary goal with The Cosmic Interloper is to write something that I myself would enjoy reading. Of course, that’s not the only motivation, but I think it’s the most important one for me to keep in mind, especially as the author. In fact, this whole story came about because after consuming oodles of fiction, I found myself craving a very specific type of story which I couldn’t find many examples of. Then I asked myself, “why not write it myself?” and here we are. Disclaimer: In general, while I’m not writing a comedy, I do intend for this story to be funny and a bit wacky or absurd. That said though, I am using this story as a vehicle to explore some potentially dark topics including (but not limited to) slavery, speciesism/racism, and existential questions of self, consciousness, and identity. Still, I’m going to leave the “traumatizing content” tags off, because I don’t feel that what I’ve written so far (or plan on writing) exceeds the threshold that would be necessary for me to tag it thusly. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way she views the world is not the objective truth (if such a thing even exists).
