Chapter 152: The Scarlet Flame Drake’s True Strength

“What exactly did I just think of?” Zhang Che tried his hardest to remember, but the flash of inspiration seemed to have disappeared entirely. There was no trace to pick up on.
He was close to swinging his fist at his head, but thinking of the serious consequences of his actions, he decided to let it go.
“No, I have to calm down!” Thus, Zhang Che shut his eyes and took deep breaths, forcing himself to calm down.
After about half a minute or so, his frustration disappeared. Zhang Che opened his eyes and looked at the Rock Tortoise, ordering it, “Come, shoot a rock bullet and show me.”
Bang! The Rock Tortoise opened its mouth, shooting a football-sized rock bullet out. The projectile crashed deep into the earth, leaving a ten-centimeter-deep crater.
“Sii…” Zhang Che sucked in a breath of cold air. His constitution might be far better than a normal human’s, but even he would end up with broken bones at the very least, if not death, if he was struck by the rock bullet.
However, this had no relation to what he thought of earlier!
Zhang Che seemed to have realized what he was thinking, and instructed the Rock Tortoise, “Are you only capable of shooting rock bullets? Can you spit out the entire mountain rock you just swallowed? Uhm, do it gently; don’t treat it as an attack.”
Although the cute tortoise had no idea why its master gave such directions, it still opened its mouth obediently and spat out a tiny black bead, which instantly turned into the huge rock from before. It slammed onto the ground with a loud crunch, causing the earth to tremble violently for a moment.
At that moment, Zhang Che came to a realization!
He tossed his backpack to the Rock Tortoise and commanded, “Here, suck this in and spit it out gently!”
The cute Rock Tortoise was very obedient. It opened its mouth and sucked the backpack in, then quickly spat it out gently onto the grass, without causing any damage to the backpack at all.
“Hahahaha…” Zhang Che immediately went wild with joy, letting out an extremely hearty laugh.
He was incredibly excited! This was even more worthy of celebration than rising to Tier Four and killing Wu Yunfeng!

It turned out that this Rock Tortoise whose mouth he had defiled was the best subdued beast! With its storage ability, Zhang Che didn’t have to worry about not being able to bring many resources into the beast world, nor did he have to worry about the things he brought back being discovered!
A moving storage container like this was truly something necessary for doing all kinds of things!
Let alone anything far-fetched, Zhang Che could immediately be liberated from his burden.
Although Zhang Che usually didn’t take part in battles, he had to always carry his backpack around. It truly wasn’t very comfortable, despite its weight being inconsequential to him.
Zhang Che could not only let the Rock Tortoise carry his backpack for him, he could also hand over the Falling Star Model X to it. In truth, any extra burdens could be given to it!
However, there was a problem…
How much space was available in the Rock Tortoise’s body? After storing Zhang Che’s belongings, would it still be able to shoot rock bullets and use its Rock Bullet Gatling skill?
Zhang Che had the Rock Tortoise swallow as many rocks as it could. In the end, he found out, to his dismay, the fellow was unable to continue after swallowing about twenty cubic meters worth of rocks.
This meant that the space within the Rock Tortoise’s body was about twenty cubic meters.
“Hmm, it is sufficient if it is only carrying my belongings!”
Although Zhang Che felt that the storage space was a little small, it was sufficient after thinking it through carefully. Being able to carry about twenty cubic meters worth of resources would probably be enough to last him a few years, wouldn’t it?
However, it was obvious that he’d never remain in the beast world for such a long period without exiting.
—
What followed next was testing whether the Rock Tortoise still had any offensive capabilities after storing Zhang Che’s belongings.
After all, not only were the Rock Tortoise’s projectiles powerful, their range was also quite long. It might be able to bring about some unexpected results under certain circumstances.
The Rock Tortoise shot a rock bullet from its mouth, which flew for nearly three hundred meters straight before exhausting all momentum and falling to the ground.
“Good, it’s actually still capable of attacking!” Zhang Che laughed out loud, clapping excitedly.

As long as the Rock Tortoise’s rock bullet attacks were still usable, its offensive strength wouldn’t be reduced too heavily. After all, if they were somewhere with rocks around them, it could replenish its ammunition at any time, couldn’t it?
As for the Rock Bullet Gatling’s cooldown time, Zhang Che didn’t worry about it. Under normal circumstances, a single shot was sufficient; what need was there for consecutive shots!?
—
“Now, we should go find that Vampiric Demon Carpet for a talk.”
Zhang Che had taken the matter of the Vampiric Demon Carpet snatching the delicacy from him to heart. He would surely get back at it if there was an opportunity to do so!
Now that the Scarlet Flame Drake had made its shining appearance, the Vampiric Demon Carpet, seemingly invincible among beasts of similar quality and level, was nothing worth mentioning. Could it possibly hope to withstand the Scarlet Flame Drake’s Liquifying Scarlet Flames?
“Hmm? Right, the Scarlet Flame Drake needs a day’s rest to recover its vital energy to use its skill again. Isn’t the cooldown time a little too long?”
Zhang Che hurriedly looked at the Scarlet Flame Drake at his side. However, he realized that it didn’t look fatigued, at least from its outer appearance. He wondered if it could continue using its skill.
In the description of its skill, it could last for three whole seconds, while it only took a second to kill Wu Yunfeng earlier. It should be able to spit flames for two more seconds, right?
“Forget it; I’d better not test it for now. If I used up all of its vital energy at once, I’d have to wait a whole day. That’s too…” Thinking up until here, Zhang Che suddenly widened his eyes.
-No, that’s not it!
-It’s not cooldown time; there isn’t any mentioning of that in the skill’s description!
-Since it needs to recover vital energy, what method is there that is faster than absorbing the rainbow crystal’s energy?-
Thinking up to this point, Zhang Che immediately recalled the Scarlet Flame Drake into his spiritual sea. As expected, he discovered a mini black hole had appeared above the dark golden beast card that represented this fellow, quickly devouring the surrounding rainbow mist for nearly a whole minute before coming to a stop.
Zhang Che couldn’t hide the happiness in his eyes. He summoned the Scarlet Flame Drake again and had it unleash its skill. A column of scarlet flames shot out from the Scarlet Flame Drake’s mouth, extending twenty meters ahead, burning for three seconds before the flames were extinguished.
Zhang Che recalled the Scarlet Flame Drake into his spiritual sea again. As he thought, it started devouring the rainbow mist rapidly again, recovering all of its vital energy after a minute and came to a sudden stop.
“This means that in the future, the Scarlet Flame Drake could use this powerful skill about once a minute!”
It was like Zhang Che had just discovered a new continent. He quickly had the Gale Wolf King use its skill and sent it back into his spiritual sea, to see if he could reduce the cooldown time by absorbing the rainbow mist.
Alas, Zhang Che realized that he was thinking too much.
Beasts with an explicit cooldown timer in their skill description were unable to reduce the cooldown time via absorbing rainbow mist.
Facing such a situation, Zhang Che didn’t feel any disappointment, either.
He understood that this was probably a result of different rules. The rules stated a cooldown period after activating a skill before being able to use it again; not even a divine object like the rainbow crystal could change it. On the other hand, the Scarlet Flame Drake only needed to recover vital energy to use its skill, and could naturally make use of this method to gain stronger offensive powers.
-Is the Scarlet Flame Drake the only exception, or are there other beasts out there that can do this too?- Zhang Che wondered. Alas, he hadn’t seen many exotic beasts above gold-quality. He was unable to clarify what the differences were.
There was no merit in thinking about something he couldn’t find an answer to. Now, it was better for Zhang Che to find the Vampiric Demon Carpet and slay it, taking revenge for it snatching his food yesterday.
Zhang Che waved his hand, recalling all the subdued beasts to his spiritual sea. After that, he summoned the Cold Abyss Flood Dragon and mounted him. Riding a layer of fog, he flew to the valley where he had encountered the Vampiric Demon Carpet yesterday.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

Re: Dragonize
After an unexpected turn of events, Drew must now survive in a world full of challenges with life-or-death stakes. Gone are the days when the biggest problems to face were awkward small-talk at physics department luncheons or mountains of lab work; this former physicist is now adrift in an unfamiliar land without any equipment. Now, Drew's only tool (if it can be called that) is a System, which provides constant reminders of all of the things that are still out of reach for a low-level being who's just arrived in a new world. Luckily, Drew has one powerful asset when taking on the challenges of this new world: surviving violent conflict is a lot easier when you have the power of a dragon at your disposal. Still, Drew has always considered violence a last resort. Why turn to fists (or claws) when a bit of quiet consideration might expose a better path forward? Maybe a life of quiet contemplation is still within reach for this former academic researcher. ...Or maybe not. It probably won't be a life of bloodless pacifism. Additional information for those who wish to calibrate their expectations (I'm adding this based on a few comments I received from readers who feel that the story is not what they expected from a dragon-themed story): Re: Dragonize is not a power fantasy -- or at least, it's not intended to be one. Re: Dragonize is a progression fantasy starting with a protagonist who must start at the bottom (or close to it), and work gradually upwards, making incremental progress with plenty of setbacks along the way. The protagonist, as someone coming from the world of academia, tends to be cautious, methodical, and contemplative. As such, expect this story to contain more than a few digressions as the main character takes the time to pontificate on a variety of topics ranging from Newtonian physics and horology to the nature of existence and the ethical dilemmas associated with being an obligate carnivore.

Making of a Genius [A Progression LitRPG]
What does it take to climb to the top of the academic ladder? Lexus came face to face with his mediocrity the moment he arrived at Cambridge University to study computer science. There was a ceiling that he could not overcome, an intellectual world that was unreachable. But if you give a chicken an eagle's wings, it will fly higher than you could ever imagine. And that was exactly what happened to Lexus: with the help of a system, he could make it big. Schedule:1 chapter per week (every Friday evening at 5:30pm GMT). The weekly schedule is to allow time for research and factual accuracy where required. Author's Note: The story is about a computer science student at university, gradually improving and embarking on the path to become a world-renowned genius-level expert with the help of a system. There'll be a lot of studying and academics, but imagine being the best in your year. Easily. At that point, academics stops being stressful and starts being fun, doesn't it? The initial chapters are heavy on mathematical detail, but I don't expect anyone to actually read through them thoroughly. It's fine to skim them or even skip them, but I hope you try to get a sense of the progress being made, and feel happy for Lexus when something 'clicks' inside his brain :) As the story progresses, later chapters will go into less depth into individual questions, though I aim to remain consistent in terms of scientific accuracy/feasibility. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the story!
