Chapter 75: Chapter 075 – Frisky Monkey

-Do I chase?-
There wasn’t a shred of hesitation in Zhang Che’s heart. He grit his teeth and continued pursuing.
The chased had already gone on for over a hundred kilometers; did it make any sense to give up now?
Although it was highly possible that the Purple Jade Condor would have consumed the Five-Colored Spiritual Flower by the time Zhang Che reached that mountain top, he had no other choice since things had already developed to this point.
“So what if you ate it? I will still kill you!”
Zhang Che grit his teeth, leaning forward against Hanxue’s back. The godly steed shot forth like a scarlet bolt of lightning, racing towards the mountain range a few dozen kilometers away.
On the way, Zhang Che saw exotic beasts on multiple occasions, but he wasn’t interested in hunting them. On the other hand, those beasts bared their fangs and brandished their claws, not knowing that they had just avoided a tragedy.
With Hanxue’s speed, the distance took less than half an hour for him to cover and arrive at the foot of the mountain range.
It was only when Zhang Che got close to the mountain that he truly felt how tall and arduous this mountain range was. Just looking up from the foot of the mountain, he could almost feel his neck break from tilting backwards.
It was surrounded by cloud and fog from its waist upwards. He had no idea how much further the unseen body of the mountain extended upwards.
Strange trees grew out from the side of the cliff, with countless branches tied into knots, and vines entangling them. Occasionally some apes or monkey-like exotic beasts could be seen climbing on them.
It was impossible for Hanxue to continue forward in such terrain.
Zhang Che let out a low sigh. He recalled Hanxue back into his spiritual sea and summoned the Wind Shadow Wolf instead.
Although the Wind Shadow Wolf was not a mount-type beast and it provided a very poor riding experience, Zhang Che could only make do with it if he wanted to catch up to the Purple Jade Condor. He climbed onto the Wind Shadow Wolf’s back and ordered it to go up the mountain.

The road was both rugged and steep, but to the Wind Shadow Wolf, it was as easy as traversing flat ground.
Zhang Che, however, was in for a bitter experience. The violent bumps he felt were similar to riding on a tractor speeding through the wilderness but amplified ten times over. He nearly vomited from all the jerking.
Zhang Che didn’t dare to puke. He was afraid that he would be flung off from the Wind Shadow Wolf’s back if he was careless, and fall to his death, becoming the first beastmaster to get killed by his own subdued beast since the start of the new age.
The wind whistled past his ear, and the fog just flew by his eyes.
It lasted for about a quarter of an hour, before Zhang Che felt the violent bumps reducing. Focusing his eyes, he realized that he had arrived at the waist of the mountain, where the ground was flatter.
Looking into the distance, a thin layer of fog surrounded him in all directions. He could see faint silhouettes of mountain peaks around him, and hear occasional cries from aerial beasts. The number of exotic beasts around here was surely not small.
Zhang Che nearly wept. Where and how was he supposed to find the exact freaking mountain which the Purple Jade Condor landed on?
He couldn’t distinguish directions around here, not to mention that he was definitely not in a safe position. If a powerful beast suddenly jumped out, he would have to run blindly, not knowing which way to escape.
It was already too late for regrets. Zhang Che could only summon all his subdued beasts and rely on his memory to search in the direction the Purple Jade Condor had landed in slowly and carefully.
—
Rustle rustle..
A small-sized jackal-like exotic beast suddenly walked out from the bushes to the side. A hint of fear flashed in its eyes when it saw Zhang Che and the surrounding beasts, quickly jumping back into the shrubs.
Zhang Che only managed to catch a glimpse of that fellow’s attributes. He discovered that it was actually a two-star silver-quality beast. Alas, it was too wary and ran away without giving him any chance to do a thing.

He felt regretful for a short time, before realizing that it would be great if every beast he encountered from now on was as tame as that. At the very least, he wouldn’t have to risk his life.
As Zhang Che advanced forward, he passed by a cliff, and suddenly felt an evil gust of wind assaulting him from above. Before he could make any evasive movements, he felt a blow to his head.
Pachi! The object that struck Zhang Che’s head suddenly broke apart. A mass of sticky stuff was now all over his head.
Zhang Che quickly hid under a rock protruding out from the ground and felt his aching head, staining his hand with a sticky red fruit.
“What the heck, is this considered a heavenly calamity?” Zhang Che was depressed. He was even struck by falling fruit as he was walking! His luck today really seemed a little bad.
Helpless about it, Zhang Che could only open his water bottle and lower his head, rinsing the fruit pulp and juice off himself.
Luckily his hair was only about half an inch long. Emptying his water bottle basically washed his hair clean.
After cleaning the mashed fruit from his head, Zhang Che set out once more. Just as he walked away from the rock, he suddenly looked up at the cliff ahead and saw an exotic beast sitting on the branch of an unknown fruit tree. It threw its hand forward sharply, sending a fist-sized fruit flying in his direction.
Zhang Che quickly dodged to the side, avoiding the tomato-like exotic fruit and looking back up at the exotic beast on the tree that was making faces at him. He was so angry that his nose was crooked from scrunching up his face.
“I freaking knew it; how could a fallen fruit possibly hurt so much!? So it was you, a little beast, behind it!”

==========
The Gluttony Monkey’s entire body was covered in grey hair, its body shaped like an ape’s, but with a face resembling that of an orangutan. The hair on its long tail was a greenish purple, looking rather eccentric. It was as ugly as it could get. At this moment, it plucked another red fruit from the tree and flung the fruit at Zhang Che.
-Are you freaking done?-
Zhang Che dodged the incoming red fruit once more. He pointed at the gleeful Gluttony Monkey on the tree, scolding, “You frisky monkey, come down here if you’re all that!”
“Zhizhi… gaga…” Seeing Zhang Che getting enraged, the Gluttony Monkey was so amused that it let out a wave of strange cries and rubbed his hands on its cheeks, scratching its face. The richness in its expression made Zhang Che, a human, blush in shame.
Zhang Che’s eyes darted around for a moment. He pointed at the Gluttony Monkey with his left hand, taunting disdainfully while a golden beast card appeared in his right palm. “Come, come, just try and throw one more at me if you can!”
The Gluttony Monkey seemed to understand the expression on Zhang Che’s face. Its weird face immediately turned angry, standing up on the intertwined branches. Its arms swung continuously, throwing a rain of the red exotic fruits down at him.
Looking at the oncoming red fruits, a trace of ridicule flashed across Zhang Che’s face. He dodged to the side, a green sword suddenly appearing in his right hand and pointing at the Gluttony Monkey above.
The monkey was shocked. Before it could react to this, it suddenly felt tremendous pain in its head. It hugged its head, crying out as it lost its balance and fell from the branch.
“Heh heh, a beast is just a beast, after all!”
Standing in the middle of a fresh batch of jam, Zhang Che watched mockingly as the Gluttony Monkey rolled down the precipitous cliff. Although it really wanted to extend its limbs to catch hold of the vines on the cliff, its mind was severely affected by the Sonic Wave attack, and it was unable to muster the strength to grab anything.
In the end, the Gluttony Monkey rolled down and crashed heavily onto a rock a short distance away from Zhang Che.

Apollyon's Curse
Within the pages of folklore and fantasy, tales of people who chase after the dream of eternity, of living forever, rarely find a happy ending. They are either struck by the grim truth of reality, give up, and return to mortality or face a ghastly realization of their wishes. The latter often the worse fate, as they come to realize, only far too late, that what they sacrificed was worth far more than the time they gained. Ultimately, the common thread in these stories is that “immortality is as much a curse as it is a blessing”. People either realize it early and give up or are doomed to inevitably face its consequences. In the world Enrich lives in, that saying does hold merit. Every pathway towards eternal life has shackles of its own. They bring those high above down to the ground, evening the playing field. It is thanks to these fundamental laws that ambitious mortals are able to defy the heavens and achieve immortality themselves. The variety of methods result in each of these bindings varying in intensity and degree of freedom. Enrich’s path doesn't break this trend. Though, after what he did to himself, most wouldn’t even consider him a living thing anymore. On the day of his ascension, a world’s worth of souls were melted and recast. On that day, the human’s path had reached its conclusion, recast into Apollyon. An artifact, a weapon, is eternal, after all. As for the curse? The payment will be made, as it must. So why not offload the curse to someone else? Mortals throw their lives away for all manner of petty reasons, noble or otherwise, especially in desperation. Eventually, someone will be willing to foot the bill. Most will if given the chance. The bait is far too tempting, after all. Power, status, knowledge. All at their fingertips. If only they say “yes”. And Apollyon is very willing to help any lost souls. If they give up everything in return, of course.

Cringeworthy moments and awkwardness will ensue as young Xyn (an anthropomorphic tiger-kin), raised in the sheltered life of a martial artist, navigates human society with a trusty sidekick or two picked up along the way and might just save his corner of the world while he's at it. Gore will be minimally present as needed to tell a fantasy martial arts tale.
