The Rise Of Nathalia Carter Chapter 44

An inexplicable feeling of sorrow swelled in Nathalia's heart as she watched the happy family.
It was what she had never had and could never have. Love and family. She just stood there and watched, frozen and forlorn.
Spencer caught up, spotted her, and was about to scorn her, and when he saw her forlorn face. It stung his heart. He followed her eyes and caught sight of the three figures in the room. His face turned stiff like a stone.
The three happy faces had no idea what was going on in the minds of the two secretive spectators.
"Happy Birthday, mum." The young man said.
"Happy Birthday, honey" The father followed. His voice is gentle and caring.
Nathalia let out a long sigh inside her. I don't even dare dream of it.
Wait. Isn't that Matt Miller, the most talked-about prosecutor in Miami recently? Nathalia noticed.
Matt Miller had been on the news for a recent important case he had cracked. His handsome face, refined manners, and warm smile had gained him a lot of admirers, especially the young ladies.
But...
The lady looked at the two men she loved the most and said with a big smile, "Thanks, Matt." to her son and "Thanks, honey" to her husband.
"Bang," something hit the floor. Nathalia turned around only to see Spencer's astounding look. He had dropped his phone.
"Hey, what's the matter with you?" Nathalia asked.
Spencer grabbed Nathalia's hand and marched towards the gate, not even bothered about picking up his phone.
"I don't like the food here. Let's go to a different restaurant." He said coldly, without looking at Nathalia. "But your phone," Nathalia said. Spencer was grabbing her hand tight and firm, and she was dragged forward. Now, what's he doing?
Then the door swung open.

"Spencer. I thought you were still in Europe. How come..." Matt asked, looking surprised, and somehow awkward.
Do they know each other? Nathalia was even more puzzled.
The other man came to the door. The gentleness had disappeared from his face and was replaced by coldness. "Spencer, how come you are here? Have you finished your work in Europe?"
Spencer quivered for a brief second. He turned around, still holding Nathalia's hand. "My dear father, shouldn't you be at the conference in Tokyo now? How come you are here having dinner with two STRANGERS?" He questioned back.
Nathalia's jaw dropped. Her head was found in a muddled state again. What's going on here?
The man Spencer called father, narrowed his eyes, and demanded sternly, "Watch your mouth! She's Matt's mother."
So it's Spencer's father. No wonder he looks familiar. He and Spencer even have the same facial expressions. Nathalia then realized, but she was still confused. Can anyone explain what's happening?
She looked at Spencer, but Spencer paid her no attention. He stared at the three faces coldly.
The lady looked embarrassed, and tears seemed to fill her eyes. Matt noticed and went to sit next to her. He put one arm around her shoulder gently as if to comfort her.
Even Kurt Davidson started to feel a bit awkward by Spencer's intense stare. He diverted the subject by asking, "Who's this girl with you?" he watched Nathalia for a few seconds then recognized her. "Nathalia Carter? Really? Spencer. Rather disappointing."
Matt looked up at Nathalia. Bright. Calm. Confident. He thought. A new girlfriend again? That's quick.
Spencer opened his mouth slightly as if he was about to say something but didn't.
Nathalia frowned at the word "disappointing" and wasn't pleased with all.
However, she remained calm. Politely and gracefully, she looked at Kurt and said, "Mr. Davidson, my father-in-law to be, very nice to meet you."

Rather disappointing?! What an insult! You are Mr. Davidson, and so what? I'm not dependent on you or begging you for anything. What's to be intimidated about? Who are you to look down upon me?
Brave and confident as usual, Nathalia acted gracefully. There was a majestic aura around her, and it demanded respect.
The loving family of three were stunned, then doubtful and confused. For one second, they seemed to believe her, and the next second, they looked uncertain with a sneer.
Matt took a better look at Nathalia again. Compared to Spencer's previous girlfriends, she isn't as pretty, but she's way more self-assured and dignified than any of them.
Is she truly fearless? Or is it because she knows he's my father and behaves intentionally so. Or she really doesn't care at all?
Seeing the innocence in her sparkling eyes, he denied the first two possibilities.
He had seen how she got bullied and beaten and how timid and delicate she looked, but he had never really thought much about it.
But now, it made him think. She's so calm and confident. She's not like someone timid at all. Which one is the real her? Is she really just 18 years old? What has she experienced?
Kurt let out a deep but stifled sigh. "What's this? Huh, Spencer?
He had never been close to his older son, Spencer, but now as his marriage was concerned, he had to step in.
The Carters were nobody to him. Not everyone was qualified to be his daughter-in-law. What the hell does he like about her? Kurt wondered. Rude and proud. She's no good to be a Davidson.
For sure, Nathalia could sense Kurt's unkindness, but she showed no sign of backing down. Her face shone with self-assurance.
Matt was impressed. She's got so much pride in her. With dad staring at her like that, she doesn't even flinch a tiny bit. Even some of the politician's dad has encountered can't manage half what she's done. She is different. Intriguing.
Spencer spotted how Matt was looking at Nathalia and frowned. He stretched his arm out and wrapped Nathalia towards him as if to demonstrate that Nathalia was his. "We are getting engaged on the 8th next month. You are welcome to our engagement party, but if you are busy, don't bother coming." He said to his father, coldly.
Nathalia felt a twitch on her lips. Shit, it's real now, isn't it? What have I done now?
Kurt finally grew angry, seriously. Spencer had never followed what he said. They could not even just sit down and have a proper conversation.
He glared at Nathalia like she was a mere subject.
"Nonsense. I don't agree. Miss Carter, you'd better give up the idea. You are not good enough for my son."
Kurt had been used to having everyone obey him, except Spencer, who had never been cooperative.
Now Nathalia was really angry. Who are you? What are you? You can't handle your son, and now you are blaming me. Don't you think I will just accept it! Huh.
Instead of showing her anger, though, Nathalia put her hand on Spencer's hand that's resting on her shoulder and smiled sweetly.
Clearly, she said to Kurt, "Mr. Davidson, I'm afraid you have misunderstood. I didn't come up with the idea. It's Spencer that fell in love with me first, and he won't give me up. If you can, persuade him and make him change his mind, and I will be gone."
