“What?”
Other than Feng Luo, everyone was stunned.
This Cerebrate, which looks like a parasitical brain worm, is completely free of the complications of life and has theoretically not eaten or drunk for decades. However, it is still alive?
Furthermore, everyone witnessed something outrageous.
The muzzle on the Wings of Death, with the speed of 1500 m/s, fired a large-caliber sniper bullet through a fist-sized hole on the transparent safe. However, it was stopped in mid-air by a red energy shield only a few millimeters away from the Cerebrate’s head.
Of course, to be more accurate, this was not just any other energy shield, but a special kind that only belonged to Zergs. It was a Psionics Energy Shield.
After the shield blocked the bullet from the Wings of Death, the dark eyes of the Cerebrate, which had already been eyeing Feng Luo, shot out a meter-long red light.
“Tsk!”
24K suddenly screamed loudly as it used its six little claws to cling onto Feng Luo’s tactical vest while shaking its little head unceasingly!
While using its spiritual link with Feng Luo, 24K sent out a very painful message to him as it continued to suffer from some sort of attack. Immediately after, a system prompt emerged and informed Feng Luo of the reason for his pet’s behavior.
[The Cerebrate has used a mental attack against your pet!]
“Mental Attack?!”
Feng Luo was in a state of shock.
He was no stranger to this mental attack ability. Before being admitted as a pet, 24K had the ability to mental attack as well and had used it to deceive many players during the city building mission. The last time, in the underground ruins, 24K had received the opportunity to evolve twice and had regained this mental attack ability.
This type of attack could seriously interfere with all of the target’s senses and could even, to a certain extent, temporarily control low-AI monsters.
This Cerebrate was exerting mental control over 24K, and it was clearly unable to resist the attack of this genuine Zerg!
After the first prompt had appeared, another two system prompts followed after.

[The mission “Heart of King City (2)” has been triggered. Please help your pet resist the mind control of the Cerebrate.]
[Attention! If the King Beetle completely controls your pet, you will lose your pet forever!]
“What?!”
After receiving these prompts, Feng Luo’s face completely changed.
The “Heart of a King Beetle” mission was the series mission that 24K activated during the previous times in these ruins.
The consequence of failing the mission was the permanent loss of his pet!
Feng Luo would definitely not be able to accept this consequence.
“Bang!”
Feng Luo’s left hand aggressively toggled on the magazine of the Wings of Death, and the finger on his right hand had pressed down on the trigger. The Wings of Death shot another bullet through the fist-sized hole again.
“Boom!”
The armor-piercing bullet broke apart after hitting the red energy shield and exploded into a large, blazing flame.
Furthermore, the flames that started from the special bullet were unable to break through the red shield in front of the Cerebrate. The flames were blocked less than ten centimeters away from the parasitical brain worm!
“No! I can’t fight it at all!”
Feng Luo’s heart sunk.
The system prompted him to help, but under these circumstances, he was unable to interrupt the Cerebrate’s mental attack on 24K by inflicting damage that should have been fatal.
Furthermore, because there was only a fist-sized hole on the entire safe, Mu Zi and the rest were unable to assist with the attack at all.
“What to do?”
Feng Luo, for the first time, felt very confused.
Although 24K was only a virtual pet, Feng Luo had already cultivated many feelings for it. Therefore, how could the system suddenly tell him that mission failure would cause him to lose his pet?
Feng Luo was unable to accept the possibility of losing 24K after everything they have been through together.
However, the current situation made this mission difficult. Once the Cerebrate controls 24K, it is likely to be controlled to summon beetles to start a war against Feng Luo and the others.
The chances of winning against 24K’s full strength under the control of the Cerebrate were quite slim. Furthermore, would he be able to kill 24K if it becomes a wild monster again and leave it with only one life?

“What to do?”
After attempting to take 24K back into the pet space, Feng Luo discovered that the retract button had turned gray. Usually, Feng Luo is an extremely confident person. However, his confidence had now hit rock bottom.
Despite the deterioration of his confidence, he remained extremely calm as long as there was no other system prompt to deliver bad news. He would not be able to handle any more bad news in regard to his pet.
Perhaps flipping the safe, which wasn’t stuck to the ground, would directly impact the Cerebrate and stop its mind control over 24K.
If that still did not have any effect, then he should directly kill 24K himself. Although it would cause him to lose a massive chunk of loyalty points, it would allow him to protect his pet from being lost completely.
However, Feng Luo’s mind was a little convoluted at the moment. Therefore, he was unable to think of a good solution right then.
In the end, he felt hopeful that the system would not actually snatch away the pets from the players since they were a part of the mission. So naturally, the system would give a solution to the players to help them complete the mission.
[Your pet has requested to fully release the spiritual link between you two!]
In Feng Luo’s vision, the system prompt ran across his eyes as it came from 24K’s spiritual link.
“Agreed!”
Feng Luo, with a delighted face, unhesitatingly chose to agree.
“Boom!”
After Feng Luo chose to agree, he instantly felt as if a heavy object impacted his brain.
Immediately after, his whole brain felt scrambled, and his vision and body felt completely different.
Feng Luo’s vision became clouded as there were now fragments of images flashing before his eyes and surrounding him.
He saw all kinds of Zergs in reproduction, huge galaxy warships traveling in the galaxy, and dozens of alien beasts that appeared to be several meters tall. He also saw a human’s combat armor being shredded by an overwhelming amount of Zergs.
The several fragments of these scenes were spinning in his head. They caused him to have a feeling of both dizziness and nausea and left his brain feeling as if it was about to explode.
[You are under the Cerebrate’s mental attack. Your evolutionary talent activates as your body reacts to its current mental state!]
[Due to your evolutionary talent, you gain the corresponding attribute of mental resistance. Resistance gained: 1%… 5%… 9%…]
[Due to your evolutionary talent, your brain domain has had an unknown change under the mental attack of the Cerebrate…]
In Feng Luo’s system log, these system prompts appeared in succession.
Meanwhile, in the real game cabin, the handmade pendant with green gems glowed and blossomed on the neck of Feng Luo’s sleeping body. The pendant had done this twice in the past when he had fallen into a coma.
“Brother Feng? What’s wrong! ”
“Manager Feng, what’s wrong?”
At the same time, when Feng Luo was under the mental attack of the Cerebrate, the people in the experimentation lab were shouting anxiously.
They had only seen that after Feng Luo launched a few continuous attacks at the Cerebrate, he had suddenly stood there motionlessly with his eyes empty as his expressions drastically changed.
As a matter of fact, because the situation had changed so fast since Feng Luo shot the gun, and the mental attack of the Cerebrate was invisible, they still did not know what was going on.
However, by observing the situation, they could guess that it was the parasitical brain worm in the safe, causing trouble.
Therefore, they rushed up and tried to find a way to attack the box, or to at least move or kick it away.
However, this idea was not successful. Just as they approached the box, the Cerebrate’s head in the safe turned around, and its red eyes swept past the many people of the Nightless City Club.
Everyone in the whole area, including the steel beetle, went into states of rest.
Everyone’s face changed dramatically. Their foreheads were still sweating, but their bodies were just vibrating in place and unable to attack. It appeared that they were also under the same mental attack by the Cerebrate as Feng Luo was.

Sorcery in Boston
The timid daughter of some of the greatest spellcasters ever to have lived has found herself in another world, courtesy of magic gone awry. In Boston, Massachusetts, in the year 1935, she finds some kind souls in a hard era. In the heart of the Great Depression, as war looms around the corner, she seeks to find her place, and must come to terms with both who she is and what she truly desires. Author's Notes: Release Note: I recently realized what the hold up is. My current mental state is not compatible with the planned ending. If I wrote the ending according to what currently feels right, it will be a wretched, cruel ending that feels monstrously unfair and invalidates the work of the various characters... because that's how my life feels at the moment. The planned ending is coming out hollow and awkward, no matter how I write it, and so I've been bashing my head. I will finish it, once I manage to either brute force something decent out, or once my head gets screwed on straight. Audience: This story is not for young children - it contains some profanity, sexual content, violence, gore, and significant adult themes. Most of these are handled delicately enough not to upset teens or adults (hopefully), hence the lack of relevant tags, but it is nonetheless unsuitable for youth. It's fairly slow paced, and focused on the development of very human, very flawed individuals. Length / Completion Estimates: The outline currently involves two books. Book 1 is expected to be done with Chapter 43. It'll probably be completely finished by sometime in March of this year. I expect to move on to the far-more-lighthearted Of Gods and Dungeons (currently in progress / on hiatus). Afterwards, I may decide to redo Book 1, or write Book 2, or actually start sharing the story most dear to me, that I've been working on for several years now. Draft 1: Please be aware that this is first draft material. I do intend to come back to do a second draft after the story is complete. If anyone notices any issues whatsoever with the story, please let me know (pm, etc) so that I can improve the second draft. Writer's Pledge: I've taken the Writer's Pledge, meaning I'm commiting to completing this story. I'm a proud member of WriTE, a group dedicated to finishing stories. It will be done! Behind the Scenes notes: This picture was commissioned from an inked artist by the name of DanP. Up until the time of the protagonist's arrival, history has proceeded as before. Some places and characters have been borrowed from wikipedia entries of interesting figures from the time. I will make note in the chapter comments when such things come up. Naturally, I've taken a great deal of liberty with them. In interest of respecting individuals, I've either attempted to portray them as accurately as possible, or modified them sufficiently enough that they're simply an inspiration, instead of a real portrayal. I've attempted to be as accurate to the era as possible, but I'm not a historian. If you're aware of inaccuracies, please, bring them to my attention so that I can correct them.
