Chapter 265: Punching Bags
“Hold on, I will think of a way to save you.”
“Oh right, Cloud City. As long as we reach the legendary Cloud City, we will definitely find a way to cure the poison.”
“You must hold on, Hathaway.”
Locke looked at Hathaway, who was lying in his arms with a pale face. The anxiety in his heart was indescribable.
He had never hated himself for being weak like today.
Had he been stronger, then Hathaway would not come in harm’s way.
Despite being so young, Locke had already become a Stage 3 Level 7 Beastmaster. He had also contracted ta Divine Dragon, a Wind and Fire Elemental, as well as a two-headed snake. He possessed great potential.
He had even defeated a powerhouse as strong as the Mountain City’s lord.
It was definitely worth taking pride in.
However, the mysterious and vicious old man’s sudden appearance was like a bucket of cold water being splashed onto Locke’s head.
The flame of pride and complacency in his heart was extinguished in an instant.
There was always someone better than him.
In front of the Stage 5 old man, Locke was like an ant. He did not have the ability to fight back.
If he could not even protect the woman he loved, what qualifications did he have to be a man.
‘I will remember the three-year promise!’
The burning fire in Locke’s eyes made his chest feel like it was about to explode.
‘I will definitely head to Dragon Beard Mountain in three years time.’
‘Not only will I defeat your so-called final disciple, but I will also make you regret the humiliation you’ve brought me today!’
Locke clenched his fists, and although his nails had pierced into his palms, he did not feel any pain.
The blood that dripped down from the gaps between his fingers had landed on Hathaway’s pale face. It was like a plum blossom on the snow, piercing one’s eyes.
“Locke, cough cough… Don’t be too hard on yourself.”
“It’s not your fault… The old man was way too strong. Stage 5… Stage 5 Beastmasters are powerful existences even in the main city. Cough cough… Don’t blame yourself!”

Hathaway used her ice-cold hand to hold Locke, and she forced a miserable smile.
“Don’t worry, since he… He made a three-year agreement with you, I… Won’t die so easily.”
“You don’t need to speak anymore, I understand.”
Locke quickly took off his clothes and put them on Hathaway’s body.
A huge change had just occurred in Mountain City. The city Lord was dead, their generals were dead, and most of their Beastmasters had died as well.
The citizens of Mountain City were still clueless regarding the events that had transpired, and Locke had no idea how the situation would develop once the truth had come to light.
A younger Locke might have jumped into action right away.
However, as he was now, he could not care less.
He summoned his Divine Dragon and placed Hathaway on its back.
With a strong gust of wind, the Divine Light Dragon soared into the sky like a sharp arrow.
While navigating their path, Locke constantly exerted his mana to form a warm shield around Hathaway.
He did not want the chilly winds that were caused by the Divine Dragon’s high speed travel to injure Hathaway further.
Feeling Locke’s familiar aura enveloping her, Hathaway smiled and fell asleep.
Even in her sleep, however, her eyebrows were still tightly knitted together. It was obvious how much pain she was in..
Locke reached out his hand and gently caressed her. He looked at the sky and gently patted his Divine Dragon for it to land.
The Divine Dragon had just experienced an intense battle in Mountain City. The mysterious old man’s aura was so powerful that it could not even budge an inch.
The Divine Dragon had also felt how anxious Locke was when Hathaway was injured and poisoned.
As such, no matter how tired it was, it did not make any complaints. It just flew silently, and steadily.
It had even deliberately avoided a downwind that could be ridden, all so that Hathaway would not feel the turbulence.
“You’ve worked hard.”
Locke patted the Divine Light Dragon’s neck and returned it to his System Space to rest.

Before the Holy Light Dragon left, however, it rubbed its huge head against Locke to comfort him.
“Hathaway, hold on a little longer. We’ll soon find a place to spend the night.”
Locke gently placed Hathaway on the ground.
Although she had fallen into a coma, Locke continued talking to her.
He hoped that by doing so, he could make her feel better.
Moving her down from the dragon had made Hathaway’s steady breathing become heavier. Locke was already very careful, but alas, he still touched her wound.
He reached out and touched her forehead.
‘This is bad, she has a fever!’
The Dragon Tooth’s poison was too powerful.
Although the old man had made a three-year promise, if Locke could not figure out a way to treat her fever in time, never mind three years, she might not even last three days!
As such, Locke had ordered the Divine Dragon to fly straight to Cloud City.
In the end, however, they needed to land in the wilderness.
Hathaway had a high fever, and this made Locke extremely anxious.
At this time, a battle cry suddenly came from the distance.
A group of people were rushing over while guarding a carriage, and pursuing them, were a group of men in black.
Both sides were wounded, and there were traces of mana to be found on them. It was obvious that both sides had been engaged in battle for a long time..
The Battle Beasts of those from the carriage were mostly bird-types. However, they were all wounded and they could no longer fly.
Only a few small falcons remained, and even then, they could barely support themselves. They constantly fired off skills to block the arrows from the pursuers.
The black-clothed men’s beasts were mostly wolf-types. Their movements were neat and well-trained. It was obvious that they were from the army.
Only the army would possess such orderly beasts.
After taking a glance at them, Locke looked away and pretended not to see them.
With Hathaway being so sick, Locke could not afford to let his attention wander elsewhere.
“Help!”
“Warrior, please help to stop them. There will be a reward!”
The moment Locke noticed the carriage, so too did the person within the carriage.
To them, Locke was their life-saving straw and as such, they drove the carriage towards Locke’s direction.
“Release your arrows and stop them!”
The black-clothed man who stretched out his hand had also noticed Locke. He assumed that Locke was the carriage’s reinforcements and immediately panicked. He quickly shot several arrows at him.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
The sharp sound of something piercing the air rang out Just from the sound alone, Locke had immediately determined that they had wind magic experts in their midst.
The arrows that were buffed by wind magic were as fast as lightning.
However, as the distance between the two parties were quite far, and since both parties were moving at high speeds, the accuracy of their arrows were slightly lacking.
Moreover, as the carriage was protected by guards and falcons, some of the arrows that were true to their mark were also sent flying.
However, there was no such guardian on Locke’s end.
One of the stray arrows had flown towards Hathaway.
“You’re courting death!”
Locke stretched out his hand to intercept the stray arrow, and his eyes were overflowing with killing intent.
The battle in Mountain City was one of the most painful and complete failures that Locke had experienced ever since he debuted.
He had no qualms with losing, but as a result of his loss, his lover, Hathaway, had been heavily injured.
He had been holding back the anger in his heart, as in order to take care of Hathaway, he needed to remain calm.
However, the men in black had managed to draw his ire.
Seeing as the punching bags had been delivered straight to his doorstep, Locke saw no reason to reject them.
Locke extended his hand and stared coldly at the men in black before him. He extended his hand and beckoned, summoning his Twin-headed White Jade Snake that had not appeared for a long time.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)
