Chapter 259: 259
Chapter 259: The City Lord Is Being Manipulated by Someone?
“Oh?”
The city lord looked at Asgela in confusion.
He knew who Locke and Hathaway were. What he did not understand, however, was Accius’ connection with them.
Asgela looked at Accius with resentment and said through gritted teeth, “He was the one who stopped me from killing Locke and Hathaway!”
“What on earth is going on?” The city lord asked with a frown.
Asgela had not provided him with any details. All he mentioned was that Accius had returned.
This had left the city lord rather lost.
“That’s right, I was the one who stopped Asgela.”
At this moment, Accius stood up and looked at the city lord. He asked, “My lord, Locke and Hathaway are not the ones controlling the invading Daemons. Why did you order Asgela to lead the imperial guards to attack them?”
“You dare question me!?” The city lord frowned, and his tone became more dignified.
Accius remained unperturbed as he answered, “If a superior does something wrong, I have the right to guide you onto the right path!”
“You…” The city lord angrily spat, “Don’t think that just because you’re from the main city, I wouldn’t dare to lay a finger on you!”
Accius responded proudly, “You seem to be misunderstanding something. I only hope that you have not steered from the path of righteousness.”
Then, he said with a gentle gaze, “Although I’m from the main city of Pavas, I’ve also resided in Mountain City for many years. My feelings for this place are authentic.”
The city lord waved his hand and shouted, “Don’t talk to me about feelings. I’ve already investigated. Locke and Hathaway are the ringmasters! They are the ones behind the Daemons invading our city!”
His eyes were filled with killing intent. He said in a low voice, “Should you interfere with my attempts to save my citizens once more, I will kill you as well!”

At this moment, Asgela interrupted, “Accius, what if those two are only pretending to be innocent? Wouldn’t your actions be akin to letting criminals go?”
“That’s impossible!” Accius immediately denied.
He could not detect a single trace of the Daemons’ aura on Locke and Hathaway.
As such, he was certain that Locke and Hathaway had nothing to do with the Daemons that had invaded.
“Do you have a death wish, Accius!?” The city Lord’s eyes were filled with killing intent, and lightning was flashing dangerously on his fingertips.
Accius hesitated for a moment before asking, “May I know why you’re so intent on killing Locke and Hathaway, my lord?”
The city lord said with a dignified expression, “I’ve already told you the reason.”
His firm words had stirred up doubt within Accius’ heart.
‘Could Locke and Hathaway truly be the masterminds behind the invading Daemons?’
The city lord turned around and placed his hands behind his back. In a dignified tone, he continued, “You have three days to bring Locke and Hathaway to my residence for interrogation.”
The flames that lit up the dark room were swaying in the breeze. They had served to make the city lord’s back look domineering.
“Otherwise, you WILL suffer my wrath…”
Looking at the city Lord’s determined back, Accius’ faith in Locke began to waver. Could Locke and Hathaway really be the masterminds?
Finally, after Accius responded, he left the study with a lifeless gaze.
After he left, there were only two people left in the dark room.
“You can leave as well.”
The city lord waved his hand and said.
“Yes!”
Asgela had already recovered some of his strength. After struggling to get up, he also left the study and closed the door.
Outside the study was an empty hall. It was late at night, and it was exceptionally quiet.

“Accius!”
After leaving the study, Asgela caught up with Accius in a hurry.
Upon hearing the voice, Accius turned around slowly and asked coldly, “What do you want?”
He was truly displeased with Asgela. He even felt a little disgusted. He was merely a lackey who was adept at currying favor. He was simply unfit for his role.
‘Asgela does not deserve the position of general!’
“The city lord has been acting strange recently, but I can’t go against him. After all, he HAS killed a general before,” Asgela said in a soft voice.
“I’d rather not associate myself with those who speak behind others’ backs,” Accius replied coldly.
A hint of embarrassment appeared on Asgela’s face as he added, “Actually, I too, believe that Locke and Hathaway aren’t the culprits behind the attack on Mountain City. However, I cannot go against the city lord’s orders.”
As he said this, he showed a guilty expression. “If I were to kill a good person by mistake, I’ll definitely feel guilty for the rest of my life.”
Accius glanced at him and said, “You can’t beat Locke.”
‘F * ck… ‘Aisjera cursed in his heart. However, on the surface, he smiled and said, “Fortunately, you appeared in time and stopped my evil deeds.”
“Enough with this nonsense. What do you want?” An impatient expression appeared on Accius’ face.
Asgela coughed awkwardly and said, “I suspect… that the city lord is being manipulated by someone.”
Accius’ expression changed and he asked in shock, “Is this true? What evidence do you have?”
…
Accius returned home with a heavy heart.
Although he did not believe what Asgela said.
The city lord had indeed changed a lot. He could feel it himself.
This made his faith, which had been shaken by the city lord, become blurry.
He did not know what action he should take to usher in a better future for Mountain City.
“Has the matter been resolved? What did the city lord say?”
At this moment, Locke’s voice rang in his ear, and interrupted his train of thought.
Upon regaining his senses, Accius immediately looked up.
He saw Locke and Hathaway standing in the courtyard waiting for him.
A cool night breeze blew past him and made his heart feel a trace of sadness. He did not know how to face the two of them.
“Not for the time being.” Accius shook his head slightly. “The two of you can stay in my residence tonight. I will meet the city lord again tomorrow. I will definitely give you a satisfactory explanation.”
“The first time didn’t work, I doubt the second time would be any better.” Locke’s voice became colder.
“Since he isn’t willing to give an explanation, then I’d rather destroy his residence!”
“No.” Accius immediately explained, “… The city lord is currently occupied with other matters, and he’s currently thinking on how he should receive the both of you.”
Accius made up an excuse and omitted what had just happened. After all, he himself was uncertain whether the city lord was truly being manipulated.
If the city lord was truly at fault, Accius would definitely stand by Locke’s side.
However, there were still many things that were unclear, and Accius was at a loss at what to do.
“For your sake, I will wait for one night.” Locke’s tone softened slightly.
“Thank you.” Accius thanked him with a tired expression.
“I will immediately get the servants to prepare a place for the two of you to rest.”
