Chapter 858: Research
Translator: Exodus Tales Editor: Exodus Tales
The recovered Johnson returned to the monster ring with joy on its face. Afterward took out the light gems he got today as rewards once again.
There were 142 light gems in total, and Abel spotted 2 sizes. The smaller ones probably belonged to beginner Holy Knights, and he had 32 of them. All the other ones were bigger, and their progress belonged to intermediate Holy Knights.
He placed a smaller one in his hand and looked at it in detail. It was made of 6 pieces of crystals, and the glow he saw was caused by the strange energy they were giving out.
“It feels familiar!” Abel mumbled and gently pressed between his eyes to take out the crystal angel statue.
He began to compare, and their energy felt extremely similar, but there were some differences.
“It has to do with the gods?” Abel mumbled to himself as he put the statue between his eyes again.
However, there was not much he could do. The gods were too out of reach.
He still hadn’t meditated, and he wanted to know if meditating with those light gems could give him something different.
He placed a small light gem in his hand and soon entered into a meditation state. Immediately, he sensed something different.
During normal meditation, mana would turn into magic power after entering the body. Even with a fresh crystal core, its energy needed to be absorbed by the body before turning into magic power.
However, at that moment, the mana entered the light gem before entering his body. By the time it reached its body, it had already become a magic power.
It seems like the light gem had a strange way to absorb the surrounding mana, speeding up the effect of meditation.
No matter how hard a wizard worked, they could only meditate for an hour every 24 hours. Therefore maximizing the effect of meditation was the goal of every wizard.
If a fresh crystal core could double the effect of meditation, the light gems were 5 times as effective.
However, only 5 times was still a little disappointing to Abel since he had to kill a Holy Knight to get one of them. In his current form as a rank 16 wizard without joining the lightnings, going against Holy Knights was almost impossible.
He got a taste of how powerful they were after the fight. He understood why only a rank 17 was capable of taking them down.
Rank 16 spells took a long time to level up unless you maximized everyone’s power. It could not break the high elemental resistance defense of those knights.
Not every elite wizard had the rune word insight for training and level up at such unbelievable speed like Abel.
No one was spoiled enough to use a light gem as meditation. Most wizards would only use them during a bottleneck. Once they sensed enlightenment, the light gem could increase the rate of level up energy emerging.

A novice wizard could use a light gem to become an official wizard. Although their upcoming journey would be harder, light gems had dramatically increased the number of official wizards.
The higher the rank of the light gem, the better its effect. If a rank 5 novice wizard used a light gem from a dead intermediate Holy Knight, their rate of successfully leveling up would dramatically increase, and their upcoming journey would be easier as well.
The light gems in the Central Continent were mostly used as a military resource. Using them as meditation was rarely seen. It could be a huge waste to Sland City to the Central Continent as a whole.
As the Evil Kingdom population grew, many Holy Knights and religious followers were cultivated in a short period of time.
Because of this, on top of a trustworthy source, they thought their operation would go smoothly. If not, they would not be willing to send out so many weaker knights.
This was how Abel had gotten so many light gems.
Getting a light gem on a normal battlefield was a lot more dangerous than what Abel had experienced.
If Abel knew the true value of those gems, he wouldn’t have been so generous on the battlefield today. He could easily finish off those other 40 Holy Knights.
“Can light gems be combined?” An idea suddenly struck.
He immediately emptied his Horadric Cube and jammed 3 small light gems in for combination.
Those 3 light gems vanished in a flash of white light, and a larger one reappeared in the Horadric Cube.
It worked! It was just that he didn’t know how much more powerful this larger one was. He had already done his meditation for the day. He could only try again tomorrow.
Since he had 111 larger light gems, he began to think if he should combine again.
He gave it a go! He took out 3 larger light gems and jammed them into the Horadric Cube for combination. It worked again, and an even larger light gem appeared.
Abel carefully compared the size of those light gems. He could clearly sense their energy difference. If the small light gem’s energy was like a creek, the medium-light gem would be a stream, and the large one would be a river.
Their power difference was almost a few hundred times apart. If Abel didn’t have something as godly as the Horadric Cube, he would need at least a hundred low-rank light gems to make a high-rank light gem.
Abel did not continue to combine more light gems. Before he did that, he would need to test out if they could benefit his training.
After putting away all the light gems, he took out the priest’s spell guide he got from the priest with giant horns.
He couldn’t help shake his head thinking about what happened. He never thought he would be teaming up with a priest.

If that priest knew what Abel had done to the priests in the Holy Continent, would he still lend a helping hand?
This spell guide was definitely the biggest reward Abel has gotten. Although other wizards wouldn’t even bat an eye on this guide if they didn’t want to become a dried-up monster and end their wizard journey, it was the most needed thing for Abel to increase ability in a short period of time.
He had been analyzing the Holy Continent’s priest spell guide, but no matter how hard he tried, he could not revert those spells to their most original form. Things like spells could be extremely different across different continents.
The higher level the spell, the harder it would be to revert.
Reverting the skeleton resurrection spell back in the day was like a walk in the park for Abel. But ever since he reached those beginner priest spells, it had taken him large amounts of time.
He flicked open the spell guide, and things began to make sense. Although the original priest spells still utilized death qi, it was filled with the respect for lives.
Abel always wanted to learn the skeleton Shaman resurrection spell, but the Holy Continent’s main ingredient was a dead wizard, so Abel did not persist.
In the Holy Continent, a priest was an official and glorious occupation, so he could finally learn this spell.
He found a few corpses of hell creatures outside of the Kurast Dock and drew the Skeleton Shaman resurrection spell pattern. Since he had that death qi and life force infused druid soul, he could cast a priest spell in its most original form.
Although it was the first time he drew this spell pattern, he could do so perfectly with the help of that piece of World Stone. Afterward, his druid soul unleashed a wave of death qi into the pattern.
Bang! The corpse blasted open, and a skeleton Sharman holding a magic staff made out of bones emerged from within.
Abel commanded that skeleton to cast a spell through his power of the will, and an ice bolt immediately shot out from its magic staff. Although it was not powerful, it had cast the spell without a magic pattern. It was its nature.
Power was not a problem. There were 20 levels to this spell. Abel could definitely summon a powerful one someday, especially with the skeleton enchantment spell.
Abel wanted to see if this Skeleton Sharman could merge with a spirit wolf as well. If it could, then it could become a wizard with the move in a flash ability specialized in one spell.
This could truly bring his power to a new level. When he leveled up the spell to its limit, he would be able to summon 9 Skeleton Shamans. That was like carrying 9 wizards with the move in a flash ability with him at all time.
Abel held down his excitement and summoned a spirit wolf with his druid soul. He controlled that Skeleton Sharman to jump on the wolf, and it was immediately surrounded by the dark energy of the spirit wolf.
It was just like a spirit guardian. The only thing different was the magic staff on its hand.
Abel looked at it with satisfaction and commanded it to flash a few times. It was just as fast as a spirit guardian knight.
Next was to level up the magic power of this Skeleton Sharman. He had his experience with the spirit guardian knight captain. He knew he just needed to feed it some soul potion, and it would level up. At the same time, the Skeleton Shaman resurrection spell would level up as well.
It had been a long time since Abel had used a soul potion. He had more than 1000 bottles of soul potions piling up, and he only needed no more than 100 to fully level up the Skeleton Shaman resurrection spell.
Since the Snake Sharman Skin and the Jade of Jordan each added an extra level to the spell, he had ended up with a level 22 Skeleton Shaman resurrection spell.
“I’ll call you the Spirit Guardian Wizard!” Abel looked forward and laughed.
The size of the spirit guardian wizard has grown dramatically with the Spirit Wolf under it.
Abel could sense intelligence coming from the soul flame of the spirit guardian wizard. It was a little smarter than the spirit guardian knights, which made sense since the spirit guardian knights were made for close combat, and the spirit guardian wizard was made for long-range spell casting.
Not to mention, those soul potions to the soul could boost intelligence as well, and it had taken vast amounts of it.
“It’s too bad it can only do an ice bolt. That spell is weak even with the maximum power!’ Abel mumbled to himself.
Suddenly an idea struck him “Maybe I can teach it some spells!”
Transferring spell knowledge was not hard. The only challenge was to get the spirit guardian wizard to understand the spell casting process.
First, Abel connected with the spirit guardian wizard’s soul flame with his power of the will. Its soul flame was filled with ice energy and in its center was a perfect ice bolt pattern.
Maybe this was the reason this spirit guardian wizard could cast an ice bolt by nature.
Picking another ice spell would be the best bet, so Abel picked the beginner wizard spell ‘frost nova,’ and large amounts of spell information was transferred to the spirit guardian wizard’s soul flame.
However, its soul flame began flickering. It seemed like it was getting overloaded by the information.
Abel quickly stopped the transfer. It didn’t seem like it would work.

Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess.
