《Genius Detective》Chapter 775: Mysterious Little Bowl

Song Lang took Lin Qiupu along with him to meet the girl. The girl was crying at the door of the autopsy room. It turned out that she had insisted on seeing her father, so Peng Sijue broke protocol and allowed her to stand by the door to take a look.
"Condolences." Song Lang stepped forward to comfort her.
The girl covered her mouth and nodded, "As long as we can find out the real culprit, I will definitely do my utmost to cooperate."
"Let's talk somewhere else!"
When they got to a meeting room, Song Lang asked Lin Qiupu to pour her a glass of water. The girl held the cup for a long time and remained silent. Song Lang noticed her gloves and asked, "Don't you take off your gloves when you’re indoors?"
"Oh, I'm used to it." She put the cup down, "My name is He Jingjing, and He Taiyang is my father. How did he get killed?"
Song Lang asked Lin Qiupu to talk about the discovery of the corpse. Lin Qiupu rambled on when the matter could have been summarized in a few words. Song Lang reminded him, "We don't need to talk about our speculations."
"This is the situation..." Song Lang said to He Jingjing, "When did he start operating a pawn shop?"
"For as long as I can remember."
"Has it been that long? Pawn shops and private loans were only legalized two years ago."
"He used to do it before too, but it wasn’t with a storefront like now. My dad's shop also operates a loan business. All three floors of the building belong to our family and the lower level is the shop. We live upstairs."
"How many people are there in the family?" Song Lang was still learning about the basics of the situation, and Lin Qiupu wrote down in his notebook "Find out about the situation of the deceased first."
"Me, my dad, my mom, and an employee, He Jun...My mom passed away half a month ago. I didn’t think that my dad would leave in a blink of an eye as well.”

"That’s so unfortunate!"
"Actually... actually..." He Jingjing's lips trembled, as if she had something to say, but found it inconvenient to say.
"What is it?"
"Actually, I have a clue to provide. It may sound absurd, but I swear it’s true."
"Please let us know!"
"Officer, do you know how many pawn shops there are in the city?"
Song Lang shook his head.
"There are over two hundred pawn shops in the city. There’s a strange rumor in the pawn shop industry in Long'an. According to hearsay, a mysterious man pawned a small bowl in a pawn shop called Yuxiang a few years ago. The small bowl is said to be made from human bones. Then the owner of the Yuxiang Pawn Shop died bizarrely, and the small bowl also disappeared. After that, other pawn shops received this bowl in succession. However, everyone who received it would have to offer life-preservation money, otherwise they’d die unnatural deaths. Fortunately, it never appears in the same pawn shop twice. This bowl appeared in our house a month ago!"
Song Lang raised his brows slightly. "Then who should they give the life-preservation money to? This small bowl won't appear out of thin air, right? Someone has to bring it over. Places like pawn shops usually have security cameras installed."
"There will be a note in the bowl with the address to send the money to. As for the amount of money, it’s up to the pawn shop owner. The more money offered, the safer you will be. Otherwise, family members will meet with trouble within a month. This is very evil. Everyone says so... As for who sent the small bowl, I don't know. My father takes care of everything in the store himself."
"You mean, after your father received this evil little bowl, your mother passed away. He was afraid that others would suffer a calamity next, so he decided to suffer financial loss in order to avoid calamities?"
"Yes, he went out with a box of cash tonight. According to this theory, perhaps he failed to deliver the money to the designated place in time, so an incident happened. After all, the small bowl had appeared at my house in the evening exactly one month earlier."

Lin Qiupu said, "This must be fake. How could such an evil thing exist?"
"Don't rush to judge." Song Lang took the small notebook in his hand and opened it to see what was written in it. "Don't ask your superiors too many questions, it will be annoying.", "Fuel refill fee is 200 yuan.", "Reasoning is big data.", "No details must be omitted when investigating cases, there are no geniuses in this line of work."
The small notebook issued by the bureau was actually used to record these things. He glanced at Lin Qiupu. Lin Qiupu buried his head in shame. Song Lang used this notebook to record clues about the mysterious small bowl.
"Is it still in the store?"
"It has probably been locked in a safe by my father."
"Please take us to see it!"
"Right now?"
"Didn't you say it will disappear without a trace? So the sooner the better."
He Jingjing agreed. Lin Qiupu followed Song Lang. He was very excited to ride in his senior’s car. Song Lang asked, "Where’s your partner, Dachang?"
"He went home after handing over the car."
"It’s already so late, so why aren’t you going home?"
"I... I will learn more about this case first, and learn how to solve the case."
"You’re a newcomer. Don't be embarrassed to go home for the sake of face. It's okay. There isn’t that much work to do during the ice-breaking stage of the case. Take this time to rest. When you become busy later, you won't get to sleep.
"It's okay. I think I learned a lot tonight."
"Young man, you’re very promising." Song Lang praised.
Song Lang followed the car He Jingjing was in. He kept smoking while driving. He found it too embarrassing to smoke in front of the deceased’s family. When he got into his own car, he had no more qualms. It was just that it choked Lin Qiupu so much that he found it unbearable.
"Open the window if you can't stand it. Don't be so reserved, okay? No bosses like having such a reserved subordinate." Song Lang said casually.
"Oh..." Lin Qiupu rolled down the window of the car. "Captain, you smoke too much. It's not good for your health!"
"Smoking is truly bad, and we will have to pay off our debts when we get old. However, in our line of work, we don’t even know whether we will survive to that day when we have to pay off our debts! Hahaha, I’m not going to make an excuse to preserve my image in front of you. My addiction is quite deep. Don't you usually smoke too?"
"I do, but I only smoke half a pack a day. My sister will tell me off whenever she sees me smoking, so I can only smoke secretly."
"You respect her very much. It seems that you two have a good relationship!"
"We’re orphans. Our parents passed away early... By the way, she also wants to be a policeman. She’s now in the police academy, although I don't want her to do this job."
"Think this line of work isn’t good?"
"I just think that she’s a girl, so wouldn’t being a police officer be too hard on her? It’s dangerous too."
"Whether a profession is hard or not doesn't depend on how the profession is. It depends mainly on whether you like it or not. You’ll never get tired of a profession you like. If I exchange professions with Jack Ma, I don't think either of us would be happy."
Lin Qiupu had heard another wise saying and nodded silently, wanting to write it down in his notebook.
"How far along is Younger Sister Lin now at the police academy?" Song Lang asked.
"She’s in her first year."
"Work hard. You’ll be promoted in three years, and you can take care of her when she’s transferred over, so that she will have to bear a lot less hardship and danger."
Lin Qiupu suddenly realized that he was right. If he builds a solid foundation here, he could take care of his sister in the future. He suddenly had the motivation to work hard.

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

Again from Scratch Saga: Izmittor Unchained
If someone precious to you needed your help, would you extend it? Would you still do it if it costs you your peace and perhaps even your life? For Tercius, a man mysteriously reborn nearly thirteen years ago, there was only one answer to both questions. Feeling compelled, he sets out to journey to the northern Sogea and its infamous Western Izmittor mountain range, a natural stronghold of sky tearing mountains and deep canyons. Legends about the place abounded, but he knew without a doubt that the hidden valleys, rushing rivers, thick forests, and desolate landscapes hid powerful predators, the likes of which stalk the harsh terrains for an easy source of meat and bones. The many natural dangers of Western Izmittor would be hard enough to navigate safely for a lone traveler, but to make matters worse Tercius had enemies in the heights of Western Izmittor, humans and spirits who would see him dead if they ever learned of his true connection to the Pyramid of Tergaron and the Society of the Magi. To make things even more difficult, he also had to ensure that the true extent of his own Innate Skills remained hidden, for if the prying eyes of the world fell on him and his many secrets came to light, then he would never again know a day of peace. Can one reborn man manage to keep his secrets and still succeed in doing what his conscience compels him to? Will he have to choose one over the other? And can he do any of it without reigniting the sparks of a planetary war the likes of which had not been seen in millennia? Follow Tercius’ story and find out! *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** This story is a continuation of Again from Scratch, a story of mine also posted on RR. Reading it is NOT necessary to read this story, but for anyone who wants to get a little bit more background, here is a link: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/38803/again-from-scratch Again from Scratch was my first journey into writing and I have taken all I learned from that and started writing Again from Scratch Saga, a continuation that is almost stand alone. Changes in certain phrases and words between the two are edits made because of the rewrite plans I have for the old story. The story is available here, on RR, on Webnovel, and on Scribble Hub.The cover was taken from PublicDomainPictures.net and made by one Nona Lohr

Peerless Hegemon
Warning: Can be quite tearjerking and depressing (or so others say). If you are weak to that and hates that kind of thing, then this story is not for you === Ye Feng lived two lives in one lifetime. First, he basked in the light of Righteousness, becoming an idol of peace and justice. Second, he trod the mired path of the Darkest Path, becoming an object of fear and death. One lifetime, Two Identities, countless experiences, still without purpose. A meaningless existence. An empty husk. In his selfishness of wanting to fill the void in him, he became the catalyst that destroyed Reality. He now controlled everything, ultimate power, uncontestable by none. But he cast it away, to be reborn anew. With a new name and a family, his goal was to understand, his place. To understand how to no longer feel empty. With his family consisting of a Reincarnated Twin Sister and Parents with inscrutable pasts, his desire was not that of grandeur. In this lifetime, he wishes not to hold power, not to gain eternal life, nor control of everything, he only wishes to live, and hopefully look at sunrise with a smile on his face. === Disclaimer: The story focuses on the Main Character’s emotional and personality growth. He is someone who is, obviously OP in some perspectives but almost crippled in others. He is not soft and does not spare anyone because it is “Bad” so expect that there would be genocide and some bloody encounters. I want this instead of just the MC’s search for life and its complication. Where Philosophy and values exist. A story where every action has proper consequences, and not everything can be conquered with a single punch (unless it can be, no need for an unnecessary complication if it can be avoided). Further Notes: This is a story that will gradually increase in word counts and become Chunkier as it progresses and will almost never be below 2000 words, but if the word count will only lengthen the chapter at the expense of a finished tale, it could and would be cut off before 2000 mark), give it a try, it won’t disappoint (I hope). And if by chance that you like it, giving a good Rating and Review will be encouraging to me and possible readers. Schedule: Monday and Friday If you want to read ahead and/or support me to creating this story, you can do it through my Patreon (link below the next chapter button.) This is also a rewrite of this: Peerless Hegemon [OLD] | Royal Road

Ode to Freud
For those who do not understand the reference, "wish fulfillment" is before anything a term created by Sigmund Freud in the 1900's. In psychology it is a state of satisfying unconscious needs and desires by the use of fantasy and delusion. In literature it is the very base of fictional work, but also the name of a style of writing where the author sacrifices the key elements of good storytelling in order to fulfill his own psychopathic, neurotic or perverse needs and desires, usually through the use of the characters in weird and forced situations. What I meant by the title of this story is that it is a trashy, badly written, shitty story about me getting some wish fulfillment by the use of some characters and a fictional world of my creation. Not the good kind of fulfillment, since my wishes are of the bad kind and I intend to fulfill those, not yours. Also, being a total amateur and not writing a proper plot before starting are two big indicators that this story is going to go bad. I guess Royal Road call this kind of stories the "Mary Sue" kind. So, unless you are a very ugly piece of trash (at least as much as I am) don’t bother reading it. Now, if you ARE messed up on the level of a clinically depressive, lightly suicidal, lolicon/shotacon aligned morbidly obese hikikomori vermin who sold his virginity to a prostitute and is currently living at the costs of his widowed mother after expending all the money he got from his father’s inheritance, all the while masturbating furiously to beast/furry dickgirl hentai, then be welcomed. Please feel free to get a serving at my antidepressants and also at the canned tuna I have stored in the fridge. There may be some cheese somewhere, and I am pretty sure I bought some juice the other day, but I have no idea where it is. Anyway. You may dislike what I write because of all the amauteur(ish) writing, or you may not. Who knows. Give it a try and write a comment. It gets lonely writing to no one. Also, feel free to grant me inspiration not only by making comments about the world and/or characters, but specially by suggesting a music for me to listen while I write the next chapter. Be warned : I do get influenced easily by the background music I listen while writing. If you exist, of course. I'm seriously doubting anyone has read anything after the "lolicon hikikomori" thing. Also, I have a tiny dick.Just so you can feel better about yourself a little more. Or maybe I have just degraded psychologically a little more and now I am into shame-play. I wonder if the psychiatrist would increase my meds a bit if I told her about it.Hope I never get to penispanick, though! Self-mutilation, especially of the castration type, would be baaaad. After all, I do like my prostitutes. And having sex with them when I can afford it. Oh, yeah, the story. I will just write the first chapter in a few moments.Until later, b(i)each.
