Nikolai lost his will after the most recent skirmish between the Grime Lords. The only thing he wants is to leave the Grimes alive, an impossible task. That is, it was an impossible task. With an Abyss that opened in the middle of the Grimes there's hope of gaining enough strength, money, and recognition to either fight, flight, or just plain old bribing his way out.
